Episode 186: Pinterest Style Boards That Actually Work
Most style boards fail for three key reasons: they're random collections without focus, they showcase unrealistic trends rather than wearable styles, and they're aspirational dreams instead of actionable plans. The result? A board that looks like it was created by multiple people with completely different lives—and that doesn't help you get dressed on Tuesday morning.
My five-step Pinterest Style Board Blueprint changes everything. We start fresh with a focused board titled with your style words, then collect pins intuitively without overthinking. After letting your collection rest (crucial step!), you'll edit ruthlessly, keeping only what truly aligns with your life and style goals.

Let's get started.
Speaker 1:Today's episode. We're going to have a little bit of fun and we are going to talk about Pinterest, and this is also tying in episodes 184 and 185 and kind of putting it all and tying it into a cute little bow. So if you haven't listened to the last two episodes, I invite you to go back and take a listen and then come back to 186, because this will definitely tie everything together. So today I'm going to be giving you and talking about your Pinterest style board blueprint. That I'm going to give you today Because I know if you are like me, you have scrolled aimlessly on Pinterest to create a style board that actually works for you and somehow they always fall flat. They just become a collage of nice to haves. But today I'm going to give you five easy steps that will help you create a board that actually works for you.
Speaker 1:But before we get started with that, I want to first talk to you about why Pinterest boards always tend to fail. So number one is they're too random. So when you're scrolling through Pinterest, it can be overwhelming at times. So one minute you can be pinning I don't know cute shoes, and then the next minute maxi dresses. It just comes out of anywhere and you're just putting everything onto just one board, which doesn't make any sense, and you just end up leaving it behind and starting another Pinterest board to do something else. The next thing you always do is is that they're all trends, so they look cute on the model, but they're not always necessarily realistic, whether it's for your lifestyle, your body, your budget or even your body. So we just look at it and it's like, oh, this looks cute, I'm going to put this on here. Or oh, this looks cute, I'm going to put this on here. Or oh, this looks cute, I'm going to put this on here. And again, this is probably like your two or three boards in and you put that to the side and then you're on to the next, creating another board, and the final reason why they fail is because they're aspirational and not actionable. Now, there's nothing wrong with having aspirational Pinterest boards because, let's face it, I even have a few myself but this is what it looks like. The board ends up looking like it's more of a dream vacation to Paris than what am I wearing to this meeting on any given Tuesday, and they're not focused. And again, there's nothing wrong with having aspirational posts, because we definitely do need to have those, but when we're talking about developing and discovering our style, we need to have a board that is not too much aspirational and more actionable. So this is what it may look like.
Speaker 1:I want you to really look at your boards the next time you're into Pinterest. It looks like probably it's created by like three or four different people with completely different jobs and lives. And again, I get it because I do the exact same thing, and the problem is never Pinterest and it's never like the tools that we use. It's actually the way that we actually use the tools that are given to us. And this is what leads me into my Pinterest style blueprint, and it's just really five easy, quick steps. So first we need to start fresh. So here's what I want you to do, and this might hurt a little bit, but it will help I need you to delete all of your old boards because we want to start fresh. Now, when you open up a new Pinterest board, I want you to title it something fun, yet focused, and this is where your three words will come into play, so you can use something like I could use classic distinction, because one of my words is classic and one of my words is distinctive. So I will go and I would use this, because this will help with setting the tone and the vibe that I want to have before I start going through and looking for pieces that I can put on this particular board.
Speaker 1:Next, don't overthink it and this is probably more for me and all of my overthinkers out there when we first do this first round, we don't want to overthink anything. Just search general terms like work outfits, date outfits, classic style, modern look, or even starting out with figuring out what your favorite color palette is, and that's actually even a great place to start when you start this board. This should probably be like a 1.5 is to start with finding your color palette that you wanna use, because that will also help set and guide you as well. Now, once you do this, I want you to pin anything that immediately catches your eye. I don't care what it is, even if you don't know why yet, it's just something that sparks a huh. I like this. This is about your gut and first reactions, so we don't want to overthink this step. Have fun with it.
Speaker 1:Next, we want to edit ruthlessly. Now this is where the magic and your words and everything really come into play. I want you to go through your pins and delete anything that doesn't fit your style goals. So this is going to sound crazy, but say you put a ball gown on there. Now that's great and all, but if you're not wearing it to the office or out on a date, it's not going to serve you. This board needs to serve you In this edit phase. It will help you narrow your focus.
Speaker 1:Here's a little tip that I would use before you go and edit ruthlessly. If you ever remember writing papers when we were in undergrad or even in high school, we would write out the rough drafts first, and then we would set it to the side for like a day or two before we came back and made any major edits. I kind of want you to do this as well when you're editing your Pinterest boards. I want you to take some time, put it to the side, go to other things maybe do in doing this Pinterest. It could even be like, say, you do it as a weekend project, take, maybe you know, a week and then come back to it over the weekend and come back and start editing it out, because it gives it time to like cool and rest and you kind of clear your head of everything that you pinned originally and it's going to give you a fresh pair of eyes for when you begin to actually edit it.
Speaker 1:Now, as you're editing it and you've kind of narrowed it down, you don't want it to be overly cluttered. I then want you to spot and look at the patterns and when you stop and look at the common threads, are there any colors that are kind of recurring, any silhouettes, fabrics? Maybe you've pinned 10 outfits that have blazers or a lot of neutral color palettes, because this is going to be your clue with finding your true style. So this is why it's actually important to let it sit before you come to steps three and four and five. So, now that you've done all of the first four steps, now it's time to name your mood. So this is where you finally give your board a mood-based name that reflects your style. So is it classic with an edge? Because that could also be mine as well, because I am classic, I want to be distinctive and there might be a little bit of edge into it. And this is your shorthand for what you're building, and you'll use this as your guide when you're shopping, editing your wardrobe and even getting dressed every single day.
Speaker 1:And as time goes on, you will begin, it will end up being second nature with the naming of your mood and pretty much after, especially when you begin to edit your closet see what you need, your closet will now reflect your Pinterest board. So I have a quick challenge for you. I want you to create your board using these five steps. So if you have to pause and come back, that is perfectly fine, and I want you to DM me your link on Instagram at my handle, styled by Tiffany O, and the link will be in the description box of this podcast episode, because I'd love to see your style come to life and I might. Once I finished my board, maybe I'll even put my link in my Instagram post, in my Instagram bio, so you can see what my board looks like as well.
Speaker 1:Now, if you're sitting here listening and say I have a board, but my closet is another story, well, that's exactly where my two-hour wardrobe refresh strategy session comes into play, because, with this session, we will discuss your goals, determine your three words and maybe even peek inside your closet just a little bit, because it will help you with creating a clear plan so your clothes actually match the style that you love and create for yourself. And you can book your session by clicking the link in the description box of this episode, and I look forward to working with you and talking to you to learn more. So, in closing, I hope you enjoyed today's quick but fun episode, and remember that style isn't just about looking good. It's about feeling confident, capable and ready for whatever your day throws at you. So, with all of that being said, I hope you have an amazing rest of your day, stay healthy, stay safe, and I will talk to you guys in the next episode.
