Episode 188: Redefining Your Style Story

Tiffany Howard

Ever stood in front of a packed closet feeling like you have absolutely nothing to wear? That frustrating moment isn't just about clothes. It's a powerful signal that you've outgrown your current style. Your personal evolution has created a gap between who you've become and the story your wardrobe still tells.

Approaching your style evolution requires mindset work before shopping. I guide you through concrete steps to redefine your style story: pausing to acknowledge your growth, identifying which pieces belong to your "old self," visualizing how you want to show up in your current season, and experimenting with new elements that reflect your evolved identity. Remember, this transformation doesn't happen overnight. It unfolds one thoughtful choice at a time, just like personal growth.

Let's get started.

Speaker 1:

Have you ever opened your closet and thought what is this mess in my closet? What is this disaster? Nothing works, nothing feels right and I don't even know where to start. Heck, I don't even want to go get dressed or, my favorite, I gotta go buy something so I can get dressed later on. And it could literally feel like a full-on crisis or emergency, especially if you have to go somewhere. It could be work, or if you're going out to hang out with friends or going to an event. But here's what I want you to know what feels like a crisis is actually your invitation to evolve your style. Story isn't ending. It's shifting or beginning, and today I want to help you reframe that frustrating moment in your closet, so that you can see it as progress instead of panic, and see it as more of a redefining your style story. So let's dive in your style story. So let's dive in.

Speaker 1:

So the reason we call it a wardrobe crisis is because it triggers frustration. It triggers self-doubt and sometimes even embarrassment, because you may feel like I think I've outgrown this. Nothing's flattering anymore. Everything looks blah or your wardrobe is stuck in a season of your life you've already moved past. I'll say this until I'm blue in the face. Nine times out of ten.

Speaker 1:

In your closet you have three to four different versions of yourself that you're trying to piece together. That is why nothing works, and this has nothing to do with your clothes. So let's also reframe that. It has everything to do with clothes. It doesn't. It's sort of like the 80-20 rule it's 80% growth mindset and 20% clothes, because you have to do the work first before you can get to the clothes. To do the work first before you can get to the clothes.

Speaker 1:

It's more of your disconnect between who you are now and the story your wardrobe is still telling. It's telling an old story and not the new story. That's why people will say, oh, you haven't evolved, you haven't changed, you haven't grown, because you look the same, even though you have evolved internally, or in the process of determining, or in the process of evolving, to that next level version of you. And this gap can make you even feel like you're failing, but I promise you you're not. It just simply means that your style hasn't cut up with your personal growth yet. So you may be on level five of your personal growth and you might be at level zero or ground zero with your style. So I want you to keep that in mind and begin to think of it differently, and less about clothes and more about aligning your style with your personal growth.

Speaker 1:

So next, we want to start to kind of, you know, flip the script a little bit. So what feels like a breakdown is often your breakthrough, and when you outgrow your wardrobe, it's a sign or, as I like to call it more so a signal that you've grown as a person. Now maybe you've stepped into a new role at work, your confidence boost has evolved, or maybe you're simply just craving a wardrobe that feels more aligned with your values and goals, or maybe even there is this little voice inside of you that's saying let me out, let me out. That is your signal and your sign to start with updating and evolving your style into something greater. But I am here to tell you that sometimes you will. No, I know you have ignored that little voice and we need to start listening to her. We will listen to it for everything else but this, and this is the one voice that you really need to listen to at times, because that voice is going to kind of catapult you into doing something that you haven't considered or thought about or don't think that it's important and that's your style.

Speaker 1:

So, instead of saying I have nothing to wear, I want you to ask yourself what is my wardrobe trying to tell me? That's where the shift happens and begins. Listen to the voice that's saying let me out. And it's no longer about clothing letting you down, it's about you yes, you, not the clothes Stepping into a new story that deserves a wardrobe upgrade to match and reflect that part. Clothes don't do anything with that, but it's all about you. So how do we begin to redefine our and your style story? So one? I need you to pause and reflect.

Speaker 1:

So, before you shop or toss everything out, I want you to take a moment to acknowledge that you have grown, and this self-awareness is the foundation of your style evolution, because it's going to give you permission to do this and that it's okay. I want you to identify the old chapter and I want you to ask yourself what pieces feel like they belong to the old me and those that may no longer need to take center stage, because now some will exit stage left, some will take on a supporting role and then, of course, you get to fill in the gaps and go shopping and buy pieces that you can integrate into your wardrobe to bring this style that you have to life. I also want you to begin to visualize your next new chapter. I want you to think about how you want to show up in your current season. Do you want to feel powerful, creative, do you want to feel effortless? And I want you to write down these words, because they are going to be your new style direction, and I have a great episode that I did last month about defining your three style words, and I'll put that episode in the description box of this video, of this show, so that you can begin to figure out what your three words are, because I need us to go deeper than just the basic words that we always use in here.

Speaker 1:

So the next, we want to experiment intentionally. I want you to introduce one new piece, or even one new detail that reflects the next level version of yourself. It could be a shoe, it could be jewelry For me, I think it's actually going to be silk scarf that I saw in a TikTok video of this young man who had it tied to his belt loop. I thought that was so fly, something I never would have thought of. But it's even in the small details and it's something easy to do. That will make a huge impact, not for everybody else, but for you to be like oh, I can pull this off, oh, I can actually do this. And it also begins to help you with having fun and being creative and open-minded when it comes to evolving your signature style. But, most importantly, I want you to remember that this evolution is always ongoing and you will make changes as you evolve and grow, so you don't need to get this perfect at all at once. It is a marathon and not a sprint, and style evolves just like you do, one thoughtful shift at a time.

Speaker 1:

Now, if you're realizing that what feels like a wardrobe crisis because we go through them from time to time is really your invitation to evolve, and that is why I've created something to help guide you through this transition, and it is called why your Wardrobe Feels Off, and this free guide will help you uncover the exact reasons why your clothes no longer feel aligned and how you can begin to align them.

Speaker 1:

Clothes no longer feel aligned and how you can begin to align them in making the shift the necessary and required shifts that you need in your wardrobe so that it reflects the person that you're becoming and stepping into and embracing.
