Pursuing my CFP designation and serving as a financial planner was the path I chose, and I love it. But there are many ways to work in the personal finance field. Like if you like educating and counseling, check out the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education or AFCPE. This organization believes in a future where all people, regardless of income or background, are empowered to achieve lasting financial well being through the highest standards of financial counseling, coaching and education. They confer an Accredited Financial Counselor or AFC designation. Now the curriculum for the AFC is less rigorous than the CFP, the Certified Financial Planner. But the AFC really delves into financial issues that are relevant for lower and middle class Americans, like managing credit cards and debt, budgeting and managing cash flows. AFCPE include educators, private practitioners, counselors who work with military service members and nonprofits. For you military spouses out there. This can be a great way to enter the personal finance field and find volunteer and paid opportunities. Check out the AFCPE website for more information, including special pricing for military spouses. Do you like people but love numbers and rules. You might excel as a tax preparer and find your niche as an Enrolled Agent. An Enrolled Agent is a person who has earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service or IRS by passing a three part comprehensive IRS test covering individual and business tax returns. Now enrolled agent status is the highest credential the IRS awards. So if you love number crunching and tax rules, you could start your own tax return preparation service or work for another preparer. There are growing opportunities to do this work remotely too. So this also is an area where volunteer work can serve as a gateway into the profession. The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program or VITA program provides free income tax preparation for service members and lower income Americans. You can find paid work with commercial preparation companies like H&R Block, which also provide initial entry level training, often for free. So these are just a few ideas for entering a personal finance profession. There's so many different ways to serve. And if you have questions and would like to know more, don't hesitate to reach out. This field is really breaking open opportunities for new faces in different places. So come join the party. And we'll talk with you again next week.
