00:03:46.455 --> 00:03:50.895 Because maybe you feel a distance, but maybe if you're honest, you secretly want this. 00:03:50.895 --> 00:03:54.164 You, you particularly wish this was is, is, is your journey. 00:03:54.435 --> 00:03:59.534 But what we're gonna see in the life of king David is I think it's more complicated than we often tell this story. 00:03:59.865 --> 00:04:01.365 Now, David, early on in life. 00:04:01.889 --> 00:04:05.460 He he's a boy, uh, under the, the, the king, uh, Saul. 00:04:05.579 --> 00:04:09.359 So king Saul is, is king and king Saul originally started off pretty. 00:04:09.359 --> 00:04:09.750 Okay. 00:04:09.754 --> 00:04:13.259 And then went downhill and God's like, look, Saul's not my guy anymore. 00:04:13.319 --> 00:04:15.389 Uh, he's not the kind of king that I want. 00:04:15.449 --> 00:04:19.528 So he sends the prophet Samuel to go anoint a future new king. 00:04:20.050 --> 00:04:24.579 And Samuel goes to David's family looks over all of his older brothers, not you guys. 00:04:24.610 --> 00:04:25.629 It's gonna be this boy. 00:04:25.870 --> 00:04:27.129 Uh, this boy's gonna be king. 00:04:27.550 --> 00:04:35.350 Now scholars suggest, uh, David was probably 10 to 15 years old when the prophet Samuel anoint him as the future king. 00:04:35.740 --> 00:04:41.379 So 10 to 15 years old, he knows this is what my destination is gonna be. 00:04:41.740 --> 00:04:45.370 But if you fast forward in the story, David doesn't become king till he's 30 years. 00:04:46.319 --> 00:04:59.069 So that means 15 to 20 years given, you know, his age that he's going to be on a journey to becoming king, knowing that that's coming, but not yet arrived at that destination. 00:04:59.279 --> 00:05:12.369 And that journey is not going to play out that the way that David probably anticipates now early on it does, he gets success after success and God is with him and, and ways that you would expect, like, yeah, that should play out well for. 00:05:12.824 --> 00:05:13.634 And it does. 00:05:13.814 --> 00:05:15.855 And king Saul begins to notice. 00:05:15.855 --> 00:05:23.355 David begins to give David authority and, and give him leadership over things because everything David does is going well. 00:05:23.535 --> 00:05:24.975 Except there's this turning point. 00:05:25.274 --> 00:05:29.475 If you're with me in, in first Samuel 18, we're begin reading in verse five. 00:05:29.774 --> 00:05:37.545 And this is when there's a turning point in the relationship between the current king Saul and this future king David, who is this up and coming leader. 00:05:37.964 --> 00:05:43.274 It says this, whatever David or whatever Saul asked David to do, David did it successfully. 00:05:43.785 --> 00:05:50.504 So Saul made him a commander over the men of war, an appointment that was welcomed by the people and Saul's officers alike. 00:05:50.985 --> 00:05:54.074 When the victorious Israelite army was returning home. 00:05:54.285 --> 00:06:00.584 After David had killed the Philistine women from all the towns of Israel, came out to meet king Saul. 00:06:00.944 --> 00:06:05.084 They sang and they danced for joy with tambourines and symbols. 00:06:05.235 --> 00:06:07.074 And this was their. 00:06:08.305 --> 00:06:14.634 Saul has killed his thousands and David, his 10 thousands. 00:06:15.223 --> 00:06:18.134 This made Saul very angry. 00:06:18.615 --> 00:06:19.574 What's this? 00:06:19.579 --> 00:06:28.783 He said they credit David with 10 thousands, and me with only thousands next they'll be making him their king. 00:06:29.144 --> 00:06:32.204 So from that time on, Saul kept a jealous eye on. 00:06:34.379 --> 00:06:41.879 now we know what Saul can only suspect is that indeed David will take over this kingdom. 00:06:41.879 --> 00:06:43.949 David will be the next king. 00:06:43.949 --> 00:06:48.930 That will, will be the one to lead Israel and, and Saul begins to feel this. 00:06:48.990 --> 00:06:50.879 And Saul begins to feel jealousy. 00:06:50.879 --> 00:06:51.839 Why David? 00:06:51.843 --> 00:06:52.769 Why not me? 00:06:53.069 --> 00:07:01.170 And so this journey is not going to play out the way David expects because of what Saul is going to choose from this moment. 00:07:02.084 --> 00:07:13.064 Now, one of the things that I learned from this story, and this may be true in your life as well, is that even when we are focused on the destination, God uses the journey to shape us. 00:07:13.605 --> 00:07:17.685 So you right now might be going, okay, here's what I want to have happen in my life. 00:07:17.685 --> 00:07:22.064 This is the destination I'm working toward that that is coming someday. 00:07:22.615 --> 00:07:25.694 And, and you may be really trying to go quickly through the. 00:07:26.564 --> 00:07:38.685 But God is going to meet you here precisely in the journey long before the destination becomes the reality long before you get there, he he's gonna meet you in the journey. 00:07:39.134 --> 00:07:44.473 Now, now this can be hard for us, cuz oftentimes as Americans, especially, we don't really care about the journey. 00:07:44.745 --> 00:07:47.353 Just get to the end, just get to the good part. 00:07:47.358 --> 00:07:49.125 You know, we wanna get rich quick. 00:07:49.125 --> 00:07:50.654 We wanna lose weight fast. 00:07:50.654 --> 00:07:52.843 We wanna arrive at the destination. 00:07:53.024 --> 00:07:55.634 I don't want a long journey to get me. 00:07:56.310 --> 00:08:06.449 But what we have to remember is that the journey is always connected to the destination and that how you get somewhere is often more important than where you end up. 00:08:06.449 --> 00:08:13.019 And I can illustrate this for you back in 1908, the New York times, uh, ran this article in their newspaper. 00:08:13.019 --> 00:08:18.240 And I think this article's incredible just on the title alone, you know, something great is coming okay. 00:08:18.300 --> 00:08:23.699 1908 New York times has this heading dog, a fake hero. 00:08:24.464 --> 00:08:27.944 Which if you knew nothing else, you knew, this is gonna be a good story. 00:08:27.944 --> 00:08:34.995 What pushes children into this river to rescue them and win beef steaks? 00:12:15.840 --> 00:12:17.850 And yet he waits and he waits. 00:12:17.940 --> 00:12:20.519 And how does he just have to wait 15 to 20 years? 00:12:20.820 --> 00:12:24.659 But this journey, this path to the kingdom is not at all. 00:12:24.659 --> 00:12:26.220 What he probably anticipated. 00:12:26.220 --> 00:12:26.639 It would be. 00:12:27.240 --> 00:12:29.429 Saul is not gonna make things easy for him. 00:12:29.429 --> 00:12:33.029 Saul's not gonna prepare him and help him and set him up. 00:12:33.029 --> 00:12:38.610 Well, now, in fact, Saul's so jealous of him that SA decides, you know how I'm gonna deal with this threat. 00:12:38.615 --> 00:12:39.659 I'm just gonna kill him. 00:12:40.259 --> 00:12:46.409 And so we read these passages, numerous passages of, of David fighting for his life. 00:12:46.500 --> 00:12:50.100 With the current king who is set on killing him. 00:12:50.429 --> 00:12:53.370 Let me share a few of these first Samuel 18 verse 10. 00:12:54.254 --> 00:12:58.485 The Merry next day, a tormenting spirit from God overwhelmed Saul. 00:12:58.664 --> 00:13:02.203 And he began to rave in his house like a madman. 00:13:02.865 --> 00:13:04.485 David was playing the harp. 00:13:04.485 --> 00:13:07.544 He was sent there to calm Saul down as he did each day. 00:13:08.085 --> 00:13:10.184 But Saul had a spear in his hand. 00:13:10.559 --> 00:13:11.700 That sounds healthy. 00:13:11.789 --> 00:13:13.649 And he suddenly herded it. 00:13:13.649 --> 00:13:17.429 David intending to pin him to the wall. 00:13:17.580 --> 00:13:21.090 This is, uh, this is a rated R Bible passage in the old Testament. 00:13:21.090 --> 00:13:21.419 Right. 00:13:21.450 --> 00:13:28.200 He's trying to literally murder David put a so, uh, spear between him and the wall, David being attached to it. 00:13:28.470 --> 00:13:31.230 But David escaped him twice. 00:13:31.679 --> 00:13:33.539 Like not once, twice. 00:13:33.539 --> 00:13:36.870 And you guys think, okay, if someone keeps throwing a spirit at you. 00:13:37.304 --> 00:13:40.575 You, you know, like we've developed an unhealthy relationship here, right? 00:13:40.575 --> 00:13:42.134 This is not good for me. 00:13:42.284 --> 00:13:56.894 You keep trying to kill me, but that's not the only time this happens fast forward a chapter first, Samuel 19 9, 1 day when Saul was sitting at home with spirit in hand, as he did the tormenting spirit from the Lord suddenly came upon him. 00:13:57.794 --> 00:14:05.745 As David played, his harp saw hurled his spirit, David, but David dodged outta the way and leaving the spear stuck in the wall. 00:14:05.745 --> 00:14:08.085 He fled and escaped into the night. 00:14:08.504 --> 00:14:09.524 Here's what I find remarkable. 00:14:09.524 --> 00:14:10.034 Have you ever seen a harp. 00:14:11.460 --> 00:14:12.090 Like have you seen one? 00:14:12.179 --> 00:14:13.500 Have you seen how people play a harp? 00:14:13.529 --> 00:14:16.830 You have to like sit down around this massive thing. 00:14:16.919 --> 00:14:23.340 David is sitting down, playing the harp and also has enough agility to Dodge, an incoming spear. 00:14:23.345 --> 00:14:24.600 That's truly remarkable. 00:14:24.600 --> 00:14:25.019 Right?
