A totalitarian society controlled by technology would exhibit several distinct characteristics, fundamentally altering how the government controls and interacts with its citizens:

1. Surveillance State

Advanced surveillance technologies, such as facial recognition, AI-powered monitoring systems, and extensive data collection, would be prevalent. The government would have the capability to track citizens' movements, communications, and activities, often in real-time.

2. Control of Information

The regime would exert tight control over the internet and other forms of media. This could include censoring or blocking websites, controlling the flow of news, and spreading propaganda. Dissenting voices or alternative perspectives would be aggressively suppressed.

3. Social Credit Systems

Similar to systems already being experimented with, citizens might be scored based on their behaviour, social interactions, and compliance with government policies. High scores could grant privileges, while low scores could lead to restrictions or punishments.

4. Manipulation Through Technology

The use of deep fakes, AI-generated content, and algorithmic manipulation to shape public opinion and rewrite history. The distinction between truth and fabricated content becomes blurred.

5. Digital Enforcement of Laws

Laws and regulations might be enforced through technology. For example, AI systems could identify and report 'criminal' behaviour automatically, leading to a system where human judgement is increasingly removed from law enforcement.

6. Restricted Access to Global Internet

A totalitarian regime might isolate its digital space from the rest of the world, creating a national intranet that limits exposure to external influences and ideas.

7. Use of AI for Decision Making

Significant governmental decisions, from economic policies to urban planning, could be made by AI systems, ostensibly for efficiency and 'objectivity,' but with potential biases encoded into them.

8. Limited Personal Privacy

In such a society, personal privacy would be virtually non-existent. The government would justify intrusions into private life as necessary for national security or social stability.

9. Tech-Enabled Propaganda

The use of sophisticated algorithms to disseminate propaganda and promote the government's agenda. This could involve tailoring messages to individual psychological profiles, a method more effective than traditional propaganda.

10. Suppression of Dissent

Advanced technology would be used to identify, track, and suppress political dissidents. This could range from online censorship to physical repression using technology-augmented law enforcement.

11. Automated Social Control

The potential for automated systems to enforce social norms and behaviours, ranging from punishing minor social infractions to incentivizing 'desired' behaviours.

In such a society, the promise of technology for improving human life is subverted to enforce rigid control and conformity, often at the expense of basic human rights and freedoms. The use of technology amplifies the reach and efficiency of totalitarian control, making resistance and dissent increasingly difficult.
