At what point down through history has totalitarianism ruled?

Totalitarianism, characterised by centralised control by an autocratic authority and the political concept of the state having no limits to its authority, has emerged in various forms throughout history. Here are some notable examples:

1. **Ancient Empires**: While not "totalitarian" in the modern sense, ancient empires such as the Roman Empire under certain emperors, or the Persian Empire, exhibited traits of centralised control and autocratic rule.

2. **20th Century Totalitarian Regimes**:

   - **Nazi Germany (1933-1945)**: Under Adolf Hitler, Germany became a totalitarian state, where the Nazi party controlled nearly all aspects of life. The regime is known for its aggressive expansionism, racism, anti-Semitism, and the atrocities of the Holocaust.

   - **Stalin's Soviet Union (late 1920s-1953)**: Joseph Stalin transformed the Soviet Union into a totalitarian state, characterised by severe political repression, widespread surveillance, propaganda, and control over the economy.

   - **Maoist China (1949-1976)**: Under Mao Zedong, China became a totalitarian state, particularly during the Cultural Revolution, when Mao sought to enforce communist ideology and purge elements of traditional and capitalist society.

   - **Fascist Italy (1922-1943)**: Benito Mussolini's regime in Italy was another example of a totalitarian state, where fascism sought to control the political, economic, and social life of the citizens.

3. **Other Examples in the 20th Century**:

   - **North Korea (1948-present)**: North Korea, particularly under the Kim dynasty, is often cited as a contemporary example of a totalitarian state, with an extreme level of state control over all aspects of life.

   - **Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge (1975-1979)**: Led by Pol Pot, this regime attempted to create an agrarian socialist society resulting in widespread atrocities.

4. **21st Century**: In the 21st century, the term "totalitarian" is less frequently used, but certain regimes are often described as having totalitarian elements, such as North Korea under Kim Jong-un, and other states with strong authoritarian characteristics.

It's important to note that the term "totalitarian" is often subject to debate among historians and political scientists, both in its definition and its application to specific historical examples. Some regimes have been more totalitarian in practice than others, and the degree of control and repression can vary significantly.
