Today’s guest is Maureen Howard from Spoonful of Sped. Maureen is a high school special education department chair in Virginia and is about to start her 8th year in the field. She is passionate about working with older students and enjoys thinking big picture about the skills students need during the transition to adulthood. She is currently pursuing her PhD in Special Education with a focus in Transition and studies the IEP process and teacher experiences when supporting student involvement. She has taught 3 college courses in special education as an adjunct professor, she develops materials that are used countywide for instruction, and has served as a guest speaker for several trainings or podcasts, presented nationally at conferences.

Here’s a free invitation you can give to your students in student-friendly language to invite and include them in their upcoming IEP meeting. There are also invitations they can fill out and deliver/send to the members of their IEP team. This is surely a great way to make the IEP process student centered!
This is an adapted book to help you teach your students the different parts of their IEP. The book uses student-friendly language to explain hard to understand components of the IEP. A one pager is included for students that can access the text altogether and a presentation deck for you to share with the class as a whole or print for your classroom library.
This is a digital presentation that you can co-create with your student to use during their upcoming IEP meeting. Add pictures of their team members and their interests. Follow up with pictures of them at their jobsites or list their strengths in a table. End with their career goal to drive home the purpose of meeting together as a team. This will put students first and give them a voice in this important process.
