Our Bible Reading of the Day is Luke 4:16-30. In this lesson, we see Jesus’ divinity, but we also see a foreshadowing of Jesus’ rejection and suffering. Luke sets forth the preparation for Jesus’ ministry with his account of the Baptism and temptation (3:1–4:13). This passage begins Jesus’ Galilean ministry, the first major section in Luke (4:14–9:50), showing the Savior’s divine power in word and deed. Jesus referred to the prophecy from Isaiah 61 that the Messiah would come and proclaim the Gospel to a fallen creation. He indicates that He was the reason Isaiah 61 was written. He brought Isaiah’s prophecy into reality through His preaching. His Word is powerful. It does what it says. As Creator, He spoke the world into existence. Now He speaks, and the sick are healed and sinners are forgiven. Today, Jesus continues to preach to His Church through His Church to forgive sinners and save the lost.
