The Reading of the Day is from Luke 7:36-50. Luke’s account of Jesus’ anointing differs from the other Gospels, which tell of an anointing in Bethany just days before Jesus’ crucifixion (Matthew 26:6–13; Mark 14:3–9; John 12:1–8). John provides the name Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, as the woman in the Bethany account. Like the woman caught in adultery, the sinful woman in Luke’s account remains unnamed. In Luke’s account, Jesus uses the woman’s actions to teach the Pharisees, and us, the true meaning of repentance and forgiveness. This woman is so filled with grief she does not even dare speak to   Jesus. Here is a woman who offers penitent sacrifice without precondition or reserve.
