Stevie Lee. I know you're a big Winter Olympics guy, but Grandma practicing her curling skills with a Roomba and a broom. The most impressive act of support of the Winter Olympics I've seen. Are you a big curling fan, Stevie Lee?
SPEAKER_06I have been watching it, man. I watched the date uh the other day, it was the Canadians against the US, and uh it got pretty um intense to say the least. No, I like it, man. And then I like the half pike, I like the long jump. I've been oh, and the bobsled. So I there was the I guess was it yesterday, the mono bobsled. So there's only one person in there. So she's pushing it down and she jumps in, she's steering and breaking herself, man. That was pretty intense, man.
SPEAKER_09Mike Adams, I think he would be a bobsled guy, or do you think he'd be a half-pike guy? Well, uh, he's a bobsled.
SPEAKER_06He he he can he can push that sled down real fast. But sprinters, they got ex they got ex-sprinters that that uh pushing the bobsled. So Mike was fast, or Mike is fast. Don't don't let me put it put past tense on him.
Show Open, Sponsors, And Housekeeping
SPEAKER_09I still think Mike Adams would whip us in a 40-yard dash today. Uh I was never close. You may have beat me in my prime. Your big body moving fast. I am Sean Clinch, that's Stevie Lee. Uh, this is the Pass Russ with Stevie Lee, episode 512 of Stories Inside the Man Cape Podcast. You know, we're all about local businesses, and our guy Dave Ramirez at Northwest Hills Liquor, he wants you to take a shot of his QR code here. That is what Dave looks like. Scan that QR code, and you can place your order. Look at that, and you'll get one of these stickers too. There you go. Bring the party or bringing the party to you. Dave is busy. Stevie, let's get it going, man, because I know things have slowed down, but that does not mean there's not a lot to talk about. You ready? Let's ride. Let's ride, baby! All right, Stevie, I think everyone watching or listening, and including the two of us, and we all know it's off season, but college football off-season, actually, college football is year-round. Well, I think we're done with all the portal editions. I think we may see some all programs, may add some along the way, but what is your objective? What's your primary focus for this off-season that you're looking at before we dive into that and we bring in our guy, the playmaker?
SPEAKER_06For me, man, spring ball. Um, I I want to see progress in the spring. Um, I'll go and check out a couple practices and I'll report back. But um, it's it's um our offense should have no excuses. We got a couple good offensive linemen, we got uh receivers, and we got running backs. So I want to see the offense improve this offseason.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, we're gonna talk a lot about that. It's gonna be interesting to see what Mike Adams has to say because uh when he gets cooking, man, you learn a lot and you want and it's engaging. And before we get to him, we got to give a big shout out to all of our sponsors and partners. We love you all. But for this one in particular, Hardgrove Roofing, and there is Stevie coming prepared. The black hat, white block letters. I love it. Take it away, and how only Stevie can promote hardgrove roofing.
SPEAKER_06Hardgrove roofing, know who's on your roof.
Mike Adams Joins And Wisconsin Move
SPEAKER_09That's maybe my favorite part of the episode. If this one's special, man, we're representing the 512, the area code of the great city of Austin, Texas. There you go. Just want to point that out. Let's bring our guy in. Our brother Mike Adams, man, we we love it when we get the three of us together. How have you been, man? And and we notice you're wearing that sweatshirt from that for that school in Madison, Wisconsin.
SPEAKER_08It is college day at Conley High School. We we have college every Wednesday, and uh, first time I've been able to don a little red and white, little crimson and cream Wisconsin version, Madison's version. So uh yeah, man, it's uh you know, glad that whole thing's behind us, but but yeah, Madison, man, the more and more I see pictures and you know, see more of the the uniforms and things like that, man. It's uh pretty pretty live spot, nice, nice little place, nice atmosphere, lakes and things of that nature.
SPEAKER_09Oh man, we can't wait. Beautiful country. For anyone who didn't see the prior episode, Mike Adams' two sons uh had transferred from Louisville uh to play football at Wisconsin. Uh Big Ten to Badgers, they have they have some history, and he's not he's not wrong. You know, Minnesota talks about the 10,000 lakes. One of the Great Lakes, I think it's Lake Michigan, is in Wisconsin.
SPEAKER_08That's correct. It's bordering uh Wisconsin, man. And Milwaukee's right there on the border, and racing, and I think Waukesha is pretty close by. So and Wisconsin's only uh, or excuse me, Madison's about an hour and a half to Chicago. So uh that that whole little general area up there in the upper Midwest, man, it's it's a nice little pocket of uh of people scenery, you know, the lakes and geographical features, all those things, man. It's it's a nice part of the country.
SPEAKER_09Man, I'm excited. We're hopefully we can all schedule time. We'll go to a badgers game at Camp Randall Stadium, and maybe by mid-season, your feelings about jump around may change.
Lambeau Opener And Early Season Stakes
SPEAKER_08Something tell me it's gonna change, right? Right, right before that first game starts against uh Notre Dame at Lambeau Field. Oh, yeah, that's that's that's gonna be a nice one. Yup, we gotta they gotta got one coming right out the gate. That's you're playing Notre Dame at Lambeau at Lambeau, Labor Day weekend. Yep, weekend of college football. So, man, I'm I'm I'm definitely there, guy willing. I'm there.
SPEAKER_06That that's gotta be um game day um atmosphere.
SPEAKER_08Very, very possible, very possible, man. That that first week, it'll be on Sunday. Um, I do I think they're that may be the only game on Sunday. I know there's a couple games that weekend.
SPEAKER_09I know Texas starts with Texas State, and it's hard to believe that those two schools dating back to when they were southwest Texas, 30 minutes apart, have never played. But they will this year.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I think that's a good thing, man. I mean, school right down the road, and I I think now, more than before, you know, Texas Ace in a position, a little better position competition-wise. Yeah, you know, don't think they're gonna beat UT, but but at least from a competitive standpoint, uh, I mean, they're they're they're part of a power, you know, four or five conference now. So I so I think uh at least on paper, you know, it'd be a decent matchup.
Texas State vs Texas And Big Picture
SPEAKER_09Yeah, I think so. Stevie and I were briefly talking about you know how spring ball is uh going to start soon for the Longhorns. Uh I think it's March 9th. Spring ball begins, and he's talking about that that offense should have no excuses to be operating uh at or near 100%. But what are you looking forward to? Now, Stevie does say he's gonna go to a few practices with we tell Sark that he should expect your presence in the spring, some, uh, for a few visits too with Stevie.
Spring Ball Priorities At Texas
SPEAKER_08Man, I think uh the ninth is actually the last day. Uh yeah, yeah. I'm I'm gonna have a a few opportunities to get over there. I mean, schedule wise, spring break and all those good things. But yeah, man, I I think uh breakout year for Arch, I mean, this is a big year coming up. I I agree. I mean, I think the offense, well, you know what? I I think there is still a question, Mark. I mean, I I think our old line, you know, we need to see what that's gonna look like. But I and but I think as far as everything goes, I mean, I think receiver-wise, we're looking good, especially with the additional Cam Coleman. I mean, big time player, big time quarterback in Arch. The running back room, uh, you know, um we lost some consistency and we lost some dudes with experience. I know we brought a couple guys in, but I I don't know if those, I mean, none of those guys are named Isaac Brown. And I know that's who they wanted in the portal. And I think those guys are solid. I mean, I mean, but I don't, they're not an Isaac Brown type, and I don't think we have that type of guy on a roster. You didn't get Jaden Ball from Florida, so Ars may be in a position where he's passed the ball a little bit more this year than running it, and uh, you just wonder about the run game. So I think to me, that might be the only question mark on the offense. Offensive line, run game. That's what I see.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, Stevie, do you have anything that maybe playing off of uh the former Longhorns analysis from your perspective? You mentioned uh you're you're solid on the offense or they don't have excuses, so to speak. But you're a defensive guy. What what are you looking forward to as far as certain players and and maybe position groups?
SPEAKER_06Uh I want to see what the uh defensive tackles do. Of course. Yeah, no question. Um, and uh the kid that we got, uh the big old kid that we got, I forget from LSU, yeah. From Lufkin. Yeah, so um uh I'm looking forward to seeing what the defensive tackles do. I want to see what Colin Simmons can do in this um in this new uh uh mush-champ defense, right? And so um that that's gonna be real exciting to see. But uh as far as the offensive side of the ball, I think offense needs to be the best offense in the country. They got the weapons now. Um I was saying earlier before you came on, is we got the receivers, we got the running backs, and we got a decent old O-line, we got some of the O-line that we are that we we a couple of O-line that we wanted. Uh a good offseason is gonna make them uh jail together. Um I was um on a different podcast um on Monday, and uh I told them that what I want to see out of Arch is I want to see some more uh design runs out of him. Uh we know he can run and move his feet, and sometimes when he's running, um it's because of there was nothing else open. Well, I want to see some some naked boots, and if it's if it's not down the field, go ahead and run it. So go ahead.
Arch Manning Usage And Run Game Debate
SPEAKER_08Well, I was gonna say was, I mean, because you but you you mentioned naked boots, and and I think honestly, man, given his value and uh his importance to the team, I'm not running a lot of design runs or arch, to be honest. Like I'm gonna keep it about as simple as his own read, where he has an option to to read it or you know, hand it off. But I'm I'm really not gonna go haywire with him with his design runs because I think arch is so savvy and he he's able to recognize when it breaks down. I think he stands more of the game by letting the pre the play break down and and actually scrambling for big time yarders than really trying to get him out, you know, and run him on some of these inside, you know, power zone, power read, you know, counters and things like that. Yeah, I mean, quarterback sweep, zone, you know, reads. I mean, I do like those, but I would keep it limited to that.
SPEAKER_06I mean, I just think Arch you know, I get what you're saying though, uh, but uh push back respectfully uh is is um I I want to soften the defense up even more, right? So they gotta they're gonna have to run, they're gonna have to um cover the run game because we got some really good two really good quarter or running backs in, and then our freshman is coming in. I think that he needs to sit a little bit and learn, but um Hollywood uh and um what's the other running backs name? Golly, and then um Coleman as a receiver and Wingo as a receiver. Yeah, we got we got the threats on the outside, threats in the backfield, also threading um uh uh arch with an arm threat and a run threat. That's gonna soften defenses up so much, so much. So I understand what you're saying, but I think Arch knows or they need to teach Arch how to protect himself. Go ahead and do that slide, go ahead and step out of bounds. Um, if he's on a naked boot and he's uh close to the out of bounds, so go ahead and get out of bounds and don't take hits.
SPEAKER_08I and I think with the naked boot, I mean, because that that's a great point to that. I mean, that's that's usually a come to run type of play. I mean, that's the play where you know if it's there downfield, if you're sprinting out, you know, if it's there, hit a man. If it's not, you're already on the move. Yeah, you're able to run down the field and possibly get out of bounds, man. But anything inside, power read, you know, cue counter, those things, man, you're in the heart of the defense.
SPEAKER_10That's true.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, you're you're not gonna be able to for a lot of times just really slide uh unless you get down the field a little bit. I'm I'm trying to protect him at all costs from that. Because man, if ours goes out the game, I mean, who do we have coming in behind him? We got a guy coming in with not a lot of experience, and then there goes your season potentially.
SPEAKER_06Well, guys, guys, in uh in podcast world, we also talking to uh a father of a quarterback, so that's that's his mindset.
SPEAKER_08That that that that is that is true. That is true. But but I that that would be man, I mean, just just think if if something were to happen to Ars, you know the the UT fan base. Why are we running? Why are we running our our our top pick quarterback? Why are we running the highs with favorite? Why are we running this guy like he's Cam Newton? You you know, that's that's not to say that he can't do it, but man, there's gonna be ours. Sark is gonna get a lot of pushback if something were to go awry with Ars Manning trying to be this running type of quarterback. He's gonna get a lot of pushback.
SPEAKER_09But you know, you know, too. I I'm I get it. He's gotta learn how to slide and avoid or minimize contact. Um, what you were saying, Stevie. I thought toward the end of the years we saw it against AM. We saw it against Michigan in the bowl game, those design runs, especially that delayed quarterback draw against AM because he went 400 yards on one play. Clearly, I'm exaggerating, but that's what it felt like. And and and he had DBs chase, I mean, couldn't catch up with right. And uh, you know, he's white lightning over there.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, no, and it it depends on the run play. I mean, that's that's definitely Q draw, I think zone read, you know. I think getting him outside on sprint outs and boots. I I think all that's good, man. But like the interior stuff, and you know, every now and then I think it's okay, but man, I'm not getting ready to run arts. If I have 10 quarterback runs, eight of those aren't gonna be Q power right and Q counter.
SPEAKER_06Oh no, no, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, don't get running them up the gut, like like he's Cam Newton, and yeah, I'm not doing that.
SPEAKER_06Arts should never run up the middle in a power um formation or a uh he should never run in between the tackles. Now, if he's spreading them out and we're running four wide, and all of a sudden he sees you know, he can check down into a going up the middle like he did in the EM.
SPEAKER_08Yes, right, yeah, but yeah, I think he's just as effective with within the the play call structure of possibly making something happen as he would be if it was a design run, especially on the inside, yeah. I mean that dude, man. I mean, he he if he gets out on the edge, and that's something we really haven't seen him do, just getting out on the edge and really picking up a lot of yardage that way. I mean, I think that we'll see more of that in the game plan this year because that dude can run. That dude's 21, 22 miles per hour. If he gets on the edge, bro, and they haven't really run a lot of zone read with with him uh and and Q sweep and some of those things. If he gets on the edge, that's that's 6'4, 220 coming looking looking at a corner, you know, out running linebackers who who are chasing, pursuing. If you do that enough during the game, man, that's gonna open up the run game for the running backs, you know, and the RPO game. I mean, so I think it just really depends on how they use him. But I that I just wouldn't won't start that hanging over his head, man. You just heard our first round Hosman Trophy running back, quarterback, trying to run this guy up the middle like he's Cam Newton. Like, like, like that, that that Texas fans would never let that go.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I hear that.
Defense Outlook And Must-Champ Scheme
SPEAKER_09Absolute truth. You know, we got Jonah Williams, uh, the DB. He uh he's a two-sport guy, and man, it's fun, it's gonna be fun when he reaches his uh capac his uh maximum potential for that other sport. Jonah Williams, man, a two-sport guy playing outfield for the Longhorns so far. Hook 'em baseball, man. They're off to a good start. Um Slosnago's second season. They won, I believe, 40 games last year, fell short in the regional against UTSA. Uh, this team is stacked and loaded. They've got everything so far. We really don't know. We all I think all three of us know. If you look at the roster, what they developed from the portal, what they brought in. This team has Omaha written on it, but I think all three of us know that you really don't know a team until like the end or middle of April. Something like that. But first impressions, if you guys have seen them, it's only been four games, a sweep of UC Davis, and then Tuesday night. It came back. They were down to Lamar on a midweek game. Came back and run ruled them. 14-4.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so that that tells me that they got to get focused and um and play their game and not play down to the competition. So um I'm sure um coach will get them right on that, but the mercy rule in college is crazy.
SPEAKER_09Adams, you're I for people who don't know, you're you're a baseball guy. You're big. If shoot, the the the image on your email, I believe, is a Yankees logo, right?
SPEAKER_08Yankees logo. That's that's my squad right there. And and man, my my quarterback son, Deuce, he was a big time baseball player, had a few, had a few college offers. I I really wouldn't mind him playing baseball right now. I think he could have been one of the best shortstops around, to be honest. But um, I had a little bit, was able to see uh UT a little bit, man. I I'm impressed with that catcher from Notre Dame.
SPEAKER_09Yep.
Baseball And Softball Omaha Expectations
SPEAKER_08That's a big time guy right there. That's a big time pickup. I mean, guys like him, and I know we picked up a few other guys. I mean, I definitely expect us to be in Omaha. I think we should be there. We have the talent, Schloss Nagel into his second year. Um, you know, this team is built on Omaha. I think we have the most you know, experiences there, the most, you know, spent the most time there more than any other team, and we won several national championships. So it's almost a shame when Texas doesn't make it to Omaha. Um, be a little bit of letdown if it doesn't happen this year, but man, the SEC is stacked. I mean, we know that. We know LSU and man, Mississippi State's always gonna be there. Ole Miss is gonna be there, you know, Florida. I mean, just you you name the team. Vanderbilt, I mean, it's stacked. So, so expect quite a few of those teams to make it to Omaha, but we should be right there with them.
SPEAKER_09And the season's just getting started. And I think that home run ball shattered a car's window that was parked, parallel parked across the street. These ladies are fun to watch. And that atmosphere at McCombs Field is second to none, in my opinion. They may give OU a run for their money for that atmosphere. I'll tell you one good storyline from this past weekend. So the Texas softball team, there's a young lady there named Katie Stewart. They were facing Northern Illinois. She's crushed a bomb off of her sister. 100%. Hey, we're I know we're midway point of February. March Madness is literally on the horizon here. If you don't think some of the pressure of winning, check out what Doug Gottlieb. He's a coach for a mid-major in the horizon league. He was a little fired up when he's in between when he's a radio show, Sports Talk Radio co-host or host. I don't know if many people have seen this. This is Doug going off on the officiating.
SPEAKER_01Again, I understand. If you're not calling that, that's fine. You had the exact same play at both ends in the last play of the game. The exact same play. The exact same play. So I need the new commissioner of the Horizon League to explain to me what a technical foul is when I don't leave the box, I don't curse, I'm not demonstrative. Okay, there was nothing, nothing that should have been called a technical foul.
SPEAKER_09Hey, we've all been there, feel a certain way, but I don't know, man. Doug, the pressure's on. I mean, even at a mid-major this time of year.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I feel sorry for that table that he just beat up on.
SPEAKER_08And the microphone. Feel sorry for his hand. Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, they Doug, if people don't remember, he's from uh northern Cali. I think the Bay Area was uh a point guard for one of those great Oklahoma State teams. That's in the early 90s, he was that was they had some solid teams, but yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_08I think he played with big country, maybe. Yeah, he was part of those those quiet, but but you what you just heard was a former player who's now coached, yes, and and knows the rules very well and has been around the game for a long time. And man, you're right. I mean, the pressure is on right now. You know, we got conference tournaments approaching. Mars Baden is right on the heels of that. I mean, I mean, it is uh and you know, I heard he was on the hot seat. So, you know, he he's probably got to get into the tournament or or at least look good in his you know conference, get to the semis or something in order to even come back the following year. So I don't know, man. What you saw was a coach that's a former player who's definitely on the high seat, and and and he's he's he's trying to save his team, trying to save his job.
SPEAKER_09He's he's the head coach of the University of Wisconsin Green Bay.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, a team that's been in the tournament quite a few times since I know I've watched the tournament. Yeah, they're always you know 15, 16 C, you know, at times. I mean, so yeah, it's uh yeah, he's been in a program that's you know, he made the tournament before.
SPEAKER_09His record's 19 and 40. That's tough.
SPEAKER_08So gotta win the conference tournament.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, to get in somehow, win that auto.
SPEAKER_08He's gonna have to get in, no doubt.
SPEAKER_09Speaking of mid-majors, I gotta 23 and three, the mighty lumberjacks.
SPEAKER_05There you go.
SPEAKER_09We're back, baby! So I got to go to the Texas LSU game Tuesday night. Uh, they had a huge lead, and LS LSU came back. So we've seen they've won five consecutive SEC games. That's impressive. They had a fouling issue. Coach Sean Miller pointed it out. He says, We will we have an epidemic, an illness. We foul, we will foul the shit out of you, is what he said. And they've kind of they cleared that up. But what I noticed last night or what you guys, they're having a free throw shooting issue, which allowed LSU to get back into it. Phoebe, we'll go around the horn, begin with you, your thoughts on this team right now. I think they're a win or two away from probably locking up an NCAA tournament at large.
March Madness Pressure And Officiating Rants
SPEAKER_06Yeah, they're just so up and down. Yeah, we've been up and down all season, man. Um huh. I went to a game. The energy in the building is always good at home. Um, it's just we just got to get some consistency. Uh, we'll we'll beat teams that we weren't supposed to win, and then we'll lose the teams we're not supposed to lose to. So um, I went to the Vanderbilt game, and at the time, Vanderbilt was ranked 10.
SPEAKER_05Yep.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and uh, and we had we we we handled them pretty easily uh during that game. So um consistency, man. Uh, and then this is coach's second year, right? Is his second year? First year, first year. Oh, first year, that's right. Yes, yeah, this coach's first year, yes. Rodney just finished last year, yeah. Uh this is his first year, so just getting some consistency going. Um, he he might need some media training, some Texas media training. Um so he'll get that. He, you know, I'm sure that CDC slapped his hand a little bit and said, just clean it up a little bit. You can be passionate, but just clean it up a little bit for the uh for the media, you know.
SPEAKER_09Clean it up for the uh yeah, the image. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06And and speaking of CDC, I wanted to say this, man. We're talking about all these sports across the um uh Texas athletics. We are looking pretty damn good as a whole athletic program. Uh tennis is doing well, uh, golf is always in it. Um, uh our swim team is always in it. So, I mean, I I feel really good about the the state of the program of the Texas athletics uh right now. And we're building new buildings, we're announcing new buildings, like it's it's um, they're starting to spend the money that they save all these years. The the athletic program that me and MA built. They're now they're not that's right.
SPEAKER_08Hey, hey, trust me, brother, they only spend a fraction of that. Yeah, it's mounds of that money.
SPEAKER_06It's mounds of it, man. And um, I went by the um the new indoor facility, right? Yeah, fields, man. It's gonna be second to none over there. Uh, they announced that they're gonna build a new um, they're taking uh volleyball away from Gregory, and they're gonna build their own little um uh stadium right there. And so that whole sports complex over by the football stadium is second to none, man. It's it's really nice. You got the Moody Center basketball right across the street from football, right over uh next to swim, right next to um the basketball practice facilities and all that stuff. So it's it's gonna be fun um uh in the next few years to see you know Texas athletics all come together, you know.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, yeah, yeah. Uh speaking of, I was about to allude to um the women, but first take a look at right now of the Big 12. If you look, they they have a system where I think every team in the Big 12 makes the tournament, but they they they protect the top four, they get double buys. If they do that today, you're looking at the likes of Houston, Kansas, Arizona, and I'm trying to remember the other one. If that were if those were the teams, that those four and Iowa State, those four could be in the final four, right? That's pretty impressive. Still, I still think Big 12 is pretty salty uh in basketball.
SPEAKER_08Um Tech to Tech, I mean, they they did lose their top players last night to uh ACL injury topping. So that that's probably they'll they'll probably make the tournament for sure, but that's definitely gonna affect their seeding.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, that's gonna affect it.
SPEAKER_08Unless they can come out of there and win the Big 12 and and you know just have an impression showing. But that's that's a big loss for them, man. Big loss.
SPEAKER_09Huge loss. Now the women uh for Texas uh back to their winning ways, one at Tennessee, another after losing a tough one against Vanderbilt. Uh, they're taking the tour of Tennessee after that loss to Vanderbilt. Uh uh Vic Schaefer uh basically said that this is the softest team that I've coached that have no heart. And after they beat Tennessee, he was asked about that, and he was basically referencing you know, this is what we're in this for. We got to hold people accountable.
SPEAKER_07I've been I basically had my legs cut out from under me on so many things with today's world and how college athletics is, but I will not give in to teaching these kids accountability, responsibility. That's my job. That comes with the territory of being the head coach at Texas, Tennessee, and you know what, should be anywhere.
SPEAKER_08He's not he's not wrong. Not wrong, not wrong. And I I agree with everything he said. And to me, I mean, that's the guy that's won a national championship where at Mississippi State?
SPEAKER_09Or came close, came close close.
Texas Men’s Consistency And Program Health
SPEAKER_08Or came close, came close, but definitely took that program to new heights. And uh he he's a winner, man. And I think he sees where this team is and the potential of the team. And when they go out there and you know, don't have a good showing, it's just an opportunity for him to find another way to inspire his team and fire him up. I I mean I I I agree with everything he said. I mean, we should be playing at that, you know, we should be playing like the best team in the country all the time. I mean, and and and for the most part, they have, but but they just kind of hit a wall in that game, they kind of stunk it up a little bit. And I I think it's more just him trying to motivate them and understand the position that they're in and the level they need to play at night in and night out. Yeah, I I look, I mean, I just look at how close uh Madison was sitting next to him Booker.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_08She's sitting there, she's paying so much attention to Coach, and I believe that was the other young lady Harmon was on the other side.
SPEAKER_05Yep.
SPEAKER_08And man, they love Coach Staver. And I know they know where he's coming from, and they they didn't take anything demeaning about what he said. I saw a couple of news cast, and like, man, Vic needs to tone it down, and you know, saying all that kind of stuff. And I'm like, man, he he he he didn't mean those words in any demeaning fashion whatsoever. Right, that's him trying to get his team ready for the upcoming tournament for the remaining games they have on the schedule, and to make a big push uh to make it to the final four.
SPEAKER_09They they'll host the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, regardless of what happens in the SEC tournament. I I will say this it it they are filling up that arena, yeah. Women's basketball, they bring a brand of it's electric, it's fun to watch, and it's reminding me, Mikey, when you were at at Texas, women's basketball with Jody Conrad was still pretty salty at that time, and then they kind of leveled out. And when Stevie, when you were there, they went to the final four, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Uh and yeah, with uh Stacey Stevens and uh Tiffany. Um, yeah, we were we some of the football players were really close with some of those girls over there, so we we got to hang out with them a lot. Um, it it they had some athletes, and Jody Conrad would be in them all the time. Constantly. Yep.
SPEAKER_08Honestly, right now, man, I mean, we when you talk about you know basketball, I I I think they're carrying the medal for the basketball program, boys and girls. Yes, I mean, I mean, our girls' program is like you said, that arena's sold out most of the time. Yeah, I mean what they made it to the final four last year. I think they were like regional finalists the year before. No, he he's turned the program around. Uh, I mean, they're big time program right now.
SPEAKER_09Gentlemen, MA, you get the honors because uh you're the unofficial VIP of the story or excuse me, the pass rush with Stevie Lee. I'm I'm third in line. Um, instead of tell a story, man, think back to your playing days. The days you you had an I what what were those? What did you have a Walkman back then? Is that what it was? I back we had Waltman's back then, yeah.
SPEAKER_08Disman, this man. This man, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_09Well, what was your if you could make a playlist from 92 to 96? What were your top five tracks?
Women’s Hoops Accountability And Culture
SPEAKER_0892 to 96. Okay, that was uh that was at the height of Tupacalypse. So so I'm I'm definitely uh, you know, you know, Tupac's on that playlist, man. Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg. I was in college, man, 92 when when the chronic came out. That's right. That's still like one of the top three hip-hop albums of all time, I think. So so Dr. Dre's gotta be on that. Snoop Dogg came a year later in '93 with his album. So he's gotta be in there. Um, Biggie in '94 came with his album. Yeah, it was some heat in the 90s. It was it was some heat. And uh probably for a little local flavor, Stevia liked this. I know '95, '96, uh, my boy Master P came out with his, you know, true album, body body. So we were making sense. Shout out to my man, uh to my man uh black, you know, no sean. You know, man, he he was he was all about that that truth and body body. We was watching my man, as I always say all year 95.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, no, that's good stuff, man. When but when I was at that age, I was um getting into high school at that time, and so I was um I'll tell you what I had, man. I had I was I was trying to be the ladies' man back then.
SPEAKER_08Of course, it was a ladies' man to the girl you married to right now.
SPEAKER_06No, no, no, I met I met her in college. Oh, okay. So I'm talking high school when when um when when the hormones first come out, you know what I'm saying? So I had jagged edge, yeah. Yeah, that's what I'm listening to. I had H Town, yeah, yeah, yeah. That was all good, that was all good, and Jodicey, yeah.
SPEAKER_09So I was to have some Keith Sweat in there. Oh, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_06I do like Keith Sweat, but he was before our time, you know.
SPEAKER_08Keith was when I was in uh middle school, eighth, ninth grade, he was yeah, he was banging at that time. Yeah, yeah, no question. I don't know about you use the word banging. Yeah, probably one word to use. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Hey, the kids are no longer in the house. No question. Yeah, so yeah, so I was at that time I was listening to that, but then yes, when I got to college, uh then uh you know, I I get my my car that that um my parents got me to go to college in, and I got down here and uh somebody was sure your parents got that car, or something.
SPEAKER_08My parents got that car, man.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, don't don't I ain't gonna show you. My parents got that car, and uh somebody was selling some 12s, some 12-inch woofers, and I got MTX amp and put on it, and I was banging rap ever since then it was rap uh from then on, man. So that that uh that ghetto dope album from Master P okay, okay, okay.
SPEAKER_08Boy boy Stevie came down here as we used to say back in the day, Kool-Aiding. Yeah, playing all the love songs and came down here, Kool-Aid and K.
SPEAKER_06Man, you know, I we didn't use that in Louisiana, and when I got here, uh Kool-Aiding, that was that that was a term that I learned and and would use every day. And yes, I got talked about real bad. Once I got locked down, my freshman year, I got talked about bad on the team, and I was like, all right, man, I'll go out there and do all that stuff. I found mine, you know.
SPEAKER_09Yeah, oh man. Hey, my freshman year at Stephen F. Austin, we had the tape. You had to make your tape, it's your your cassette tape of for your songs for your dorm room visits. Uh yeah, your your that was the play. So what was it?
SPEAKER_06Shy shy shy. Uh a little quick story since we're on uh the story time. One of the lead singers from Shy, his name is Carl Martin. Carl Martin. That's right, lives in Austin, Texas. Now met him, and uh, I told him, I said, Man, um you won't believe this, but my kids listen to Shy. He listened, they listen to your your your old stuff. He's like, No, that's not true. My daughter pulled it up for him, pulled her his song up for him. He was like, Oh, well, she does listen. So uh he's uh he's now an Austinite, um, and still making music, but he does like more uh children's stuff, yeah.
SPEAKER_08We didn't get him on the podcast, yeah. That guy was banging when it came out. That was that was my freshman year in college, man. Me and Kenny Harrison, who who's who the who's the head coach at Humble Summer Creek. One of one of my receivers came in with us, and pretty much everybody on that whole uh third floor there, gesture. Yeah, we were banging that shy.
SPEAKER_09I remember what Adams. I do remember before I left coming up there. Jason would get me downstairs, right? First seeing you, you were uh laughing. I don't remember it's you and Lavelle. Yeah, oh my god, freshman year. It was it was an adventure every every visit.
SPEAKER_08Hey man, so I just since we are on storytelling that that so we we we call the third floor, we we renamed it the gardens. Okay, the third floor used to be called, I think they called it the ghetto or or something, uh-huh, right? I think that had just been tradition from the guys that came before. So we were like, nah, we we this is the gardens, you know. You you older guys don't come on our floor, or it's gonna be a problem, right? We talk we're talking about older guys like Wifer Tub, Van Malone, so some of these guys Joey Ellis, you know, so so we you know we we held off Lance Gun. Hey man, but we had we had a we had an all-star roster of guys too, you know, myself, Lavelle Pinkney, uh Priest Holmes. Hey man, we took care of our floor. Like guys did not come on our floor. We we we strapped a couple of those old guys for coming on our floor. We earned our respect. The word was out. Stay away from those guys on the third floor in the garden.
SPEAKER_05That's funny. That is awesome.
Man Cave Story Time: Dorm Pranks
SPEAKER_08They they got us one night, though, man. Tough came down, man, knocked on my door. I opened the door, man, and they splashed me with whatever, who God knows what was in that trash can. I don't know what was in there, but it didn't feel good in my eyes. And those guys ran upstairs. This was on a Sunday. No, there was when no one was really doing anything at that time at UT, man. And we were just watching in living color or something. We were just bored. Football had gone off, and then here comes Eric Jackson and Winnie Cubs, they come down to my door, man. They knock on the door and just splash me, bro. I was like, oh man, and that pretty much marked the last time I lived in gesture because I I tried to uh unwind the fire hose that was next to my room and took it upstairs and tried to blast those guys. And and Winfrey comes, man. That's my boy, too. I mean, we we almost kind of grew together back. He has some some family members that live next to my family members in uh Grand Perry, Texas. He called a campus police. Oh, yeah, dude. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This these pranks are going like real real another direction at this point. Call the campus police. Here comes the campus security guard, man. He opens our door on the third floor. And man, we see him, man. We dropped the hose, cook all running. Kenny Harrison runs into his room. And this is how we all got caught.
SPEAKER_06That's how you got caught.
SPEAKER_08Lavel, Lavelle, Priest Holmes. You know, we're all gone, man. And the dude was like, uh, hey man, what are y'all doing? And he was like, Well, I wouldn't have caught any of you guys, but I recognized the big tall guy. He was talking about Lavelle. Lavelle was like 6'5. He said, I really don't know who the other guys were, but I recognized. A big call guy, man. Long story short, man. We we were sitting in front of Cleebry and the John Magic the next day. Oh, they were laughing. They thought it was funny. They was like, Yeah, guys, um, you know, everything's pretty much out of our control at this point. Um, the university is gonna take some disciplinary action, and we don't really know what what's gonna happen. Long story short, we got kicked out of the dorms, and that's that's that's that was it for me, living in Jester. Yeah, fun funny story, man. Funny.
SPEAKER_09Stevie, did you have to stay in Jester?
SPEAKER_06I did. I did. Uh, I only stayed there for half the year. Um, Cleve Bryant uh let me move off uh after that first year, and uh, got my own apartment then. But MA, did you guys did they stick pennies in the door jams to lock you in your room?
SPEAKER_08I think that has happened before. That didn't happen to me, but I think that has happened. I think I heard about that with a few guys.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I heard about I heard about no one did it to me, but other guys got locked in their room, just stick a bunch of jam a bunch of pennies in there so you can't unlock the door. That was yeah, that's crazy, man.
SPEAKER_08We have some characters, man, on that football team, I'm telling you.
SPEAKER_06We had some good times, man. And then another funny story is uh in my closet. So I don't know if y'all did this, but in the inside of your closet on the sh on the side shelf, you write your name that you okay. Yeah, and then yeah, and so there was a a few names, but the name that that got out of the dorm right out of right uh after me was uh Ricky Brown. Oh okay, yeah, and Ricky Brown. Now we go to church together, and yeah, yeah, yeah. And I told him I took yeah, I told him that uh I had his room, he remember signing his name, and I said sign mine right under yours, man. So that's funny.
SPEAKER_09That's you know, one story. I mean, we had that when I was in college, the the pranks were endless. But one thing I think you all both of you can and relate, you learn to never leave your room with your door open and and and leave it wide open because Jay Reeves told me a story said he he did that, and his hard lesson, uh hard truth lesson, he came back, put his head down, and there was a dump, there was uh weights from a dumbbell in his pillowcase.
SPEAKER_10Oh wow, that's funny.
SPEAKER_06That's a great prank. I know I need to try that with my girls.
SPEAKER_08Hey, I'm telling you, man. Hey, Jay Reeves and that crew that he was with, those older guys, I mean Anthony Curl, and yeah, you know, some of these guys, when I was a freshman, they were like seniors, fit year guys. Hey man, though those dudes were you talking about the ultimate pranksters, Grady Cabinets, and all these older guys. I mean, you had to watch out for those older guys, man. You know, the winford cubs was a part of that whole little crew. Nah, those those dudes, those dudes were wild. They were wild.
SPEAKER_09This may have been our best man cave story segment. Story. My god, that was beautiful. If MA's in the house, you know it's gonna be a good night.
SPEAKER_08Oh man, yeah, yeah, this was a great one here.
SPEAKER_09Great, man. MA, we'll we'll we'll connect here in a I guess in another week, two weeks.
SPEAKER_08Yes, sir. Now that sounds good, brother.
SPEAKER_09Load up on the Wisconsin Badger gear and keep wearing it.
SPEAKER_08Oh, definitely, man. Definitely. Uh they they they uh look looking forward to watching some big ten football more in depth this year, and and obviously he's getting to see more boys play and see what kind of impact they're gonna have on the team. So uh, yeah, it's gonna be interesting, dude. It's gonna be fun. It's gonna be fun.
SPEAKER_06I'm I'm working on my daughter's school right now as well. So oh, that's what Avala, yeah, Avalon University, Kansas City. Yeah, so we're I guess it's college night, college rep your kid, too. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wins ain't no doubt, no doubt. Yeah, so that's good stuff, man. Uh, inmate, thank you for coming on, man. This is this was fun tonight for sure.
SPEAKER_08Definitely, man. Appreciate you, brothers, definitely. Definitely. Looking forward to it.
SPEAKER_09It may get the better half a hug for us, man, and we'll see you here in about two weeks.
SPEAKER_08We'll do, we'll do, brother. Appreciate y'all, man. Much love. Yes, sir.
SPEAKER_03Here at Hargo Roofing, uh, we try to think outside the box to kind of get the creative juices flowing. So I brought in my friend Stevie Lee, former defensive tackle for the Texas Longhorns. Um, he's gonna help the team strategize, really motivate them by the fire.
SPEAKER_04This guy's gonna block down. This guy's gonna block down. You put your butt into the guard, and that way, my mic linebacker gets free to do what.
SPEAKER_03Not only are they gonna learn a thing or two, but they're gonna also leave with a great attitude and a bunch of smiles on their faces.
SPEAKER_04I'm sorry, what does this have to do with roofing? Exactly. Get out. Right now. I said get out.
SPEAKER_03For me, that's what it's all about is just having fun, making our employees have a great time. Hardgrove roofing. Know who's on your roof.
SPEAKER_00This is JJ Gotch, CEO of the Austin Gamblers. And segment two of Stories Inside the Man Cave is next.
SPEAKER_02I know. Me too. I don't remember the fact anymore. That's kind of where we're at. I'll be back.
SPEAKER_06He's amazing, man. I love him.
SPEAKER_05Oh, hey, we we were all thinking what that was. Yeah, man. Uh yep, I'm gonna leave it there.
SPEAKER_09Nice rush of moisture through the cave.
SPEAKER_05Yep, salt water. Do we need to see it again? I I I don't know. I think I think we're good.
SPEAKER_04Hey, man, tell me something good.
SPEAKER_09The best segment right here in podcasting history. Uh tell me something good, my brother, because it is. I love what how it's feeling outside. I know we're gonna get popped with some freeze or something, and we just don't know when. But remove Mother Nature and Elements. Tell me something good, my brother.
Sponsor Skit: Hardgrove Roofing
SPEAKER_06Man, something good, man. Um, is this past Saturday I hit 45 years old? And that's for me, that's something really good. I got some friends that didn't make it to 45, you know. I got family members that didn't make it to 45. And I got, you know, there's people that didn't, I am grateful that I saw this, you know. I'm seeing this. I'm grateful that I'm still here for my babies and uh here for my wife. Um it's uh it's a blessing to me to see another day, another year. Uh so I was really happy. That's kind of a it's a small milestone for me. He's 45 years old, and um, and uh we're healthy and happy and and thriving and doing well. And uh I'm really thankful for that. So I'm that's that's my something good that I got to see uh my 45th birthday, working on my 46th year right now on this earth. And uh I just want to do good, man. I just want to uh uh be a people's person and and and make people happy and do good, do some good in this world, leaving it better better than I uh than I found it, you know. So leave the world better than I found it. So um that's something good for me, man. Uh I appreciate all of the the well wishes. I appreciate the video that you did for me, man. Put a big smile on my face. You don't know, you don't understand, man, that that uh I was smiling from ear to ear, showing all 32. So uh I appreciate that, Sean. You're welcome, brother. Um it's um it's it's surreal how many people out there actually care about you. And and uh I may not talk to you to people, a lot of the people that wish me happy birthday for a year, year or two years. Uh, but that that birthday wish meaning it means that we can pick up where we left off. You know what I mean? Always. Yeah, and so um uh there's some text that came over that that said happy birthday, and you can you can see the the last time they text you was happy birthday. So that means we haven't talked for a whole year, but it's it's it's it's um we I know if I can pick up the phone, I will just pick up where we left off, and we haven't talked in a couple years. So I'm really appreciative to those people in my lives, in my life. Um, the the couple friends that we have in my life. Um my wife actually uh put together golf uh outings with some of my friends and old teammates. So on Tuesday, on Tuesday, I went out and played golf with uh DJ Johnson and AJ uh Johnson and uh and um and Jermaine Cooper, he's uh he ran track at Texas when we were at Texas. And so we played over at the Hills over in Lakeway. And uh, and then tomorrow my other group of uh my regular group of um golf buddies are coming out to play with me tomorrow. So it's um it's it's it's surreal how many guys that actually like that that like being around, we like being around each other, you know? So um big shout out to my wife for for making me do that and putting that together for me. Good summer, yeah, because most most of the time the the golf albums don't make it out of the group chat. So she made it happen for me. So uh I haven't played golf twice in one week in a long time, and I'm doing it this week. So um, but that's my something good, guys. Um, just be positive. Uh if you need somebody to lean on, you can call on me. But you know, if if somebody didn't tell you in the last shoot, hour, day, week, uh, month, I love you. I love you. I do. So if you feel like no one else does, just know I do. So I'm just spreading some love, man. That's something good for me, man. I I I love everyone out there. Um and and uh just keep going. It's gonna be a positive year for you. Just keep moving one foot in front of the other.
Tell Me Something Good: Gratitude And Health
SPEAKER_09Keep going. Yeah, man. Let's give uh Stevie Lee a big round of applause. Uh, and and and if you haven't already, just wish him another happy birthday. Hey, no, we that's pretty big deal, especially as we get older and we start realizing that uh we're surviving some of our friends and and and other loved ones. So that this deserves one of those. I'll tell you something good, man. It wasn't good at the time. I you know, I've been really proactive about my health, you know. So you we're at an age where we know our body. So Friday, I I I there were like six of the past previous nine days where I was like feeling something weird, and then Thursday night I was I didn't want to tell anybody about it because I didn't want to uh instill fear, and I and if anyone finds out, I hope they don't get mad at me because I I kept it to myself. Uh so I had to uh change my schedule Friday, worked, and I canceled a personal appointment for uh had an appointment with I forgot what it was, and I but they rescheduled for this week. I went to the Austin Hart Hospital on Lamar Boulevard in the 38th. Amazing. You walk in that little waiting room and they get you in immediately. I was only there for three hours, ran a ton of tests, treated me with the utmost respect. Um, it was not a heart attack, it was just stress and anxiety, yeah. And so now we're learning to combat. I think we all go through that. Uh so that's great. Man, I'm happy, I'm with you. Living is everything, yeah. Living and realizing I have brothers and friends and people like you in my life. Yeah, love you, brother. Love you, man.
SPEAKER_10Love you, sir.
SPEAKER_09Good thing, man. I appreciate it. For the great city of Shreeport, Louisiana, the home of Stevie Lee and the home of Hardgrove Grouping. Much love to you guys and the entire northwest Louisiana area that watches this great hat, white on black is always a good choice for hats. And to Nacadosis, Texas, the home of my college alma mater, Stephen F. Austin, Axem, Jackson, to my beautiful hometown, Austin, Texas, and to everybody in this great state, Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and to the south, and then into New Mexico, all of you who are watching, and for some reason, we get in love in Kansas City, Missouri, or Kansas. I don't know which side, but we love you too. And to all of us, everyone who watch us, support us, be sure to like and follow each of our social media platforms. And to the OG Man Cave boys, that being Harbaugh Hart, Big Mike, and Knee Coach Mo, who I got to see today, what do we tell him, Stevie Lee?
SPEAKER_06I'm in my car in the video.
