A pub a few steps from UT Austin is named “1972,” and that one choice quietly tells a whole story about power, policy, and why women’s sports look the way they do today. We start on the Drag at a patio that buzzes with game-day energy, then trace the name back to a real turning point: the signing of Title IX and the massive leap it created for women’s athletics in public schools and universities across the United States.

From there, we connect the dots to women’s college basketball and the Texas Longhorns program, where the ripple effects of Title IX show up in visibility, investment, and the expectation of competing on the biggest stage. With Texas headed toward another Final Four appearance and a shot at a national title, we talk about what fans notice when a season feels different: personalities clicking, work ethic showing up every day, and seniors who want it badly enough to pull everyone together.

We also spend time with Deborah Hallam, a fan of UT Women’s Basketball for three decades and the person behind the 1972 Pub, where supporters gather to celebrate a team that feels special. The heart of the story is community, connection, and choosing to make women’s sports the center of the room instead of an afterthought.

If you care about Title IX, women’s basketball, Texas Longhorns history, or simply finding places that treat women’s sports with real respect, hit play. Subscribe, share this with a friend who loves the game, and leave a review with your favorite Title IX ripple effect.

Why The Pub Is Named 1972

SPEAKER_01

This quaint patio with endless energy is literally steps away from the UT campus on the drag. The 1972 pub is not named after the address or someone's birth year. Instead, it's the year of a significant achievement and progress.

Title IX And Longhorns Basketball Growth

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, man. 1972 was a key year for women's athletics. Title IX was signed, and basically it said that if you were receiving government money and funds for men's programs, boys' programs, then you, in order to keep receiving those funds, would need to offer women's programs. And that was key for public schools and universities across our country.

SPEAKER_01

FYI Title IX sparked the growth of women's college basketball and the Texas Longhorns program. Later tonight, the Longhorns will officially make the program's fifth Final Four appearance to win shy of the program's second national title.

Fans Rally For A Final Four Run

SPEAKER_00

You know, I it's just some wonderful dynamics and their team, uh yeah, their personalities, their work ethics. I think everything has just really come together this year. And again, I think both seniors want it badly, and they're gonna do all they can to keep that team jailed.

SPEAKER_01

Deborah Hallam has been a fan of the UT Women's Basketball Program for three decades. And her 1972 pub is where she and fans just like her gather together to celebrate this special team.

Community Built Around Women’s Sports

SPEAKER_00

We were having conversations with lots of customers about how we'd had a great season, we'd made it to Final Four. But in those conversations, everyone would say, Oh, but wait till next year, because of the seniors and the things that had changed and helped the team. And everybody was so excited about this season a year ago.

SPEAKER_01

And just like this Texas team, the 1972 pub has character.

SPEAKER_00

We are all about community, connections. We want you to bring your family and friends and connect over women's sports.

SPEAKER_01

And pay a visit to the 1972 pub.
