SPEAKER_04

The Archdiocese of Toronto and the National Catholic Broadcasting Council through the kind cooperation of the Toronto Catholic District School Board presents Sunday TV Mass.

SPEAKER_03

Welcome to the celebration of the Sunday TV Mass on the fifth Sunday of Lent. I'm Father Peter Turone. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from Jacqueline Georges from Ontario. This Mass is offered in memory and for the repose of the souls of Ian and Andre Maskell, Percy Deganis, Terence Leahy, and Vaughn Leonard and Margaret Georges, and for all the souls in purgatory. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

unknown

Amen.

SPEAKER_03

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

unknown

And with your Spirit.

SPEAKER_03

Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. I confess to Almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do. Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I ask Blessed Mary of a virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. Let us pray. By your help, we beseech you, Lord our God, may we walk eagerly in that same charity with which out of love for the world your son handed himself over to death. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.

unknown

Amen.

SPEAKER_01

A reading from the book of the prophet Ezekiel. Thus says the Lord God I am going to open your graves and bring you up from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you back to the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the Lord when I open your graves and bring you up from your graves, O my people. I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live. And I will place you on your own soil. Then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken and will act, says the Lord. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_06

But there is forgiveness with you so that you may be all his dead for sloth and great hour to it. I wait for love. My soul waits, and in his word I hope my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen in the morning with steadfast love and great power to remote.

SPEAKER_01

But you are not in the flesh, you are in the spirit. Anyone who does not have the spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give you life to your mortal bodies also through his spirit that dwells in you. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_03

Glory to you, O Lord. The sisters of Lazarus sent a message to Jesus, Lord, he who you love is ill. But when Jesus heard this, he said, This illness does not lead to death. Rather, it is for God's glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it. Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. Then after this he said to the disciples, Let us go to Judea again. When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him while Mary stayed at home. Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him. Jesus said to her, Your brother will rise again. Martha said to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day. Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, even though they die, will live. And everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? She said to him, Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one coming into the world. Jesus was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see. Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, See how we loved him. But some of them said, Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying? And Jesus again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and the stone was lying against it. Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days. Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God? So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, Father, I thank you for having heard me. I know that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me. When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out. The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, Unbind him and let him go. Many of the Jews, therefore, who had come with Mary, had seen what Jesus did, but believed in him. The Gospel of the Lord. Whoever believes in me, even though they die, will live. And everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? This is the question that Jesus asks Martha after the death of her brother in the midst of her anguish. Jesus is the resurrection and the life. Where does the idea of the resurrection come from? After all, as Christians, this is part of our creed, we believe that Jesus died and he rose from the dead, he resurrected from the dead. We believe that at his second coming, that we too will rise from the dead. So we will experience a glorified body. So what happens? How does where did this come from? Well, God revealed this to us already in the Hebrew Bible, in the Old Testament. We can see that even in the first reading that was proclaimed earlier from the prophet Ezekiel. The Lord provides this vision. He says, I'm going to open your graves and bring you up from your graves, O my people, and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. We know what the Lord is speaking of. Again, will be reunited and we will be fully alive in God. Those that will be with the Lord, we pray, all of us, again glorified to be able to be with Him and Mary as she is body and soul in heaven. So this idea repeats itself in the Old Testament. So the Jewish people already had this understanding. So when Jesus rises from the dead, they knew that this was going to happen at the end of time, but not in the middle of history, of salvation history. So Martha, she herself understands this. She goes, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day. So she later on will be overwhelmed with joy when she's able to see Jesus in the resurrection. These words are incredibly powerful because all of us, all of us, have had loved ones that have died. And we know how incredibly painful it is. The most difficult thing I so far in my life and as a priest, but also in my life, my these few decades, was being next to a little boy as he passed from this world to the next, and to be there with the presence of his parents. The most agonizing thing as a priest, I can't even imagine to begin what it was like for his parents. And the only thing, there are no words except Christ's words that can give us the strength to endure the agony of death. And his words are, I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, even though they die, will live. And everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. So that physical death that came because of the sin of Adam and Eve. Original sin damaged everything, and it brought death into the world, physical death. But the Lord promised us, he says, even though he's going to face it, and we hear that in the suffering that he himself experiences, he's weeping over the death of his friend. He's weeping at seeing what sin had caused, original sin. Jesus also has in mind that he's facing death, that he himself is going to his death. This is the last miracle before he's brought to his passion. So with all of this, Jesus is carrying all of this, and he's and he faces death straight in the face. And he provides with this grace, right, this miracle, so for Lazarus, who is going to die physically afterwards, but the Lord does this again to remind us that he is Lord of everything, and that even though we have to face death, death does not have the final say, as we say in the prophets that's used for many funerals. So the Lord shows us, he says, look, this time, these three days, this fourth day that Lazarus was dead, and he rose from the dead. Well, the Lord is saying, look, this is going to happen to me. Because Jesus, when he dies, he's going to be buried, he's going to be in the tomb for three days, but he is going to rise again. And this is, again, the joy for all of us as Christians, for those who believe, because we know that when the soul leaves the body, the soul goes immediately to Jesus and receives its judgment. And we know this. We have one life. And that's why we always pray for the dead, because we want them to be with the Lord in heaven. If they're being purified, we ask God for this grace. We hope that everyone, all of them, all of our loved ones, right, are already with the Lord that have passed before us. But we also know that one day, when Jesus comes back, we're not going to be just spirits. We're going to be resurrected in the flesh like he is. And that means that we'll be able to see Jesus, we'll be able to be hugged by him and hug him, but we'll also be able to hug and embrace those that we love and those that have died and that are interceding before the throne of God. So for all of us who have lost loved ones, may these words provide a deep sense of consolation and hope, because Christ rose from the dead, and we have every reason for hope and every reason for joy that awaits us in the future, but not without passing through the crucible of suffering beforehand. Let us now profess our faith in the Lord. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who is conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Brothers and sisters, let us bring our prayers to the Lord. For the baptized as they continue their journey to renewal, if towards Easter, we pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer. For adults and children preparing to join the church through baptism, we pray to the Lord.

SPEAKER_03

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks. Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God through Christ our Lord. For as true man he wept for Lazarus his friend, and as eternal God raised him from the tomb. Just as taking pity on the human race, he leads us by sacred mysteries to new life. Through him the host of angels adores your majesty and rejoices in your presence forever. May our voices we pray join with theirs, in one chorus of exultant praise as we acclaim. Make holy, therefore, these gifts we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewful, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you. Giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it. For this is a chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray the partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, and Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also, our brothers and sisters, who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, will bless Joseph, our spouse, with the blessed apostles, and all the saints who will please do throughout the ages. We may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God, Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever.

SPEAKER_08

Amen.

SPEAKER_03

At the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, Peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the fate of our church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever.
