Fr. Peter Jae Choi
From the historic Loreto Abbey Chapel. With the kind cooperation of the Toronto Catholic District School Board, the National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_03Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I am Father Peter J. Troy. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contributions from three donors. The first is Maria Arrujo Nickel from Edmund, Alberta, in memory of her father, Jose, Victoria Arrujo, and her brother David Modesto Arrujo. The second is Roy Mancini from Victoria, British Columbia, for the Mancini family. The third is Raymond Harry from Round Rock, Texas, in thanksgiving to God. Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Brothers and sisters, let us call to mind our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. I confess to Almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I ask Blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. Glory to God in the highest. And on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory. Lord God, Heavenly King, O God Almighty Father, Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. You take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us, for you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the most high Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Let us pray. O God, who will that your word should take on the reality of human flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary. Grant we pray that we who confess our Redeemer to be God and man may marry to become partakers even in his divine nature, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.
SPEAKER_00A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. The Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God. Let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said, Hear then, O house of David, is it too little for you to weary the people that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child, and shall bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel. For God is with us. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_05But you have given me an open air. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required. Here I am. I come to do your will. In the scroll of the book, it is written of me. I delight to do your will. Oh my God. Your life is within my heart. Here I am lord. I come to do your will. I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation. See, I have not restrained my lips as you know Lord. Here I am Lord, I come to do your will.
SPEAKER_00Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body you have prepared for me. In burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book, see, God, I have come to do your will, O God. When Christ said, You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings. These are offered according to the law. Then he added, See, I have come to do your will. He abolishes the first in order to establish the second. And it is by God's will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_03A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. The angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth. The Virgin engaged to a man whose name was Joseph of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you. But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now you'll conceive in your room and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David. He'll reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. Mary said to the angel, How can this be since I'm a virgin? The angel said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be holy. He will be called Son of God. And now your relative Elizabeth, in her old age, has also conceived a son. And this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren, for nothing will be impossible with God. Then Mary said, Here am I, the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word. Then the angel departed from her. The Gospel of the Lord. Dads were given three instructions which he had to tell their daughters before they began their walk. The instructions the dads were to give to their daughters were: one, I will never leave you. Two, you can ask me anything. Three, you should listen only to the sound of my voice. So before he began his walk with his daughter, Matthew repeated the instructions over and over again. Miller repeated back to him. In the beginning, Matthew found it easy guiding her because he was allowed to put his hand on her shoulder and they were allowed to walk and talk with each other. And then all of a sudden, a silent signal was given by the camp counselor to remove his hand from his daughter. And with another silent signal from the camp counselor, Matthew could no longer speak to his daughter. All he could do then was to follow his daughter, hoping that she remembered the second instruction that she could ask him anything. He was hoping she would ask for directions. She began to wander off and got off track. At that moment, the camp counselor intentionally misled his daughter. You seem lost. Why don't you follow me and I'll get you caught up with the group? As soon as she followed the counselor's instructions, she ended up in a ditch. With a blindfold, she didn't know where she was and how to get out. She paused and thought for a few minutes. He stood there waiting for her to talk to him. Finally, she remembered the instructions and called out to her dad. Dad, are you there? When she called out, he couldn't call back and began to cry. He could barely respond. Yeah, I'm here. When she heard back from her dad, she realized that her dad never left her. He was always there. It was she who forgot to reach out to him. This exercise taught him an important lesson on trust. Even when God is invisible to us and remains silent, he's there. But in the time of struggle, when we're off the track, he's there. God never leaves us. How often do you and I forget that God will never leave us? How often do we forget that we can ask God anything? And how often do we forget that we should listen only to the sound of his voice? What do you do when you can't see? What do you do when you're afraid? Do you turn to God or do you make your own plans? In the first reading, King Ahaz found himself in a dire situation. He just experienced military defeat from the surrounding kingdoms of Aram and Israel. It was God's punishment for his unfaithfulness and for turning to idolatry. Ahaz had destroyed all secret vessels and shut down the temple of the Lord. God spoke to Ahaz to ask him for a sign. But Ahaz responded, I will not ask the Lord. I will not tempt the Lord. It sounded pious and full of confidence in God, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. He wasn't going to submit to God's plan. He was going to turn to the Assyrian king for protection. Ahaz sent a messenger to the Assyrian king. Come up and rescue me from the hand of the king of Aram and from the hand of the king of Israel who were attacking me. In the end, he didn't repent and disobeyed God. Unlike Ahaz, Mary obeyed God. When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, she was already engaged or betrothed to Joseph. She had her dreams and plans, but she put them aside and said yes to God's plan. It was through her yes that God became incarnate and made God's plan of our salvation possible for us. From the story I told earlier about Matthew and his daughter at the camp, his daughter couldn't see. She didn't need to know where she was headed. But it was enough that she had the assurance of her father. He was with her and there for her. In the same way, our blessed mother didn't know what her future held in store for her and didn't have all the answers. But it was enough for her that God was with her. Some years ago I heard a story of a man who used to steal comic books from the bookstore when he was young. Because he spent all his money on comic books and spent too much time reading them, his graves began to suffer. So his parents told him he couldn't buy any more comic books and stopped giving him allowance money. So he began to steal. When his dad finally found this out, he became visibly upset with his son and spanked him. It was back in the 80s where parents could get away with spanking. Then one day his mother noticed he stopped stealing comic books. So she asked him, What made you stop stealing comic books? Is it because you're scared of your dad spanking you? He replied, No, Mom, that's not why I stopped stealing. It's because I saw him cry. I realized that I made him cry. That's when I stopped. It's not the fear of punishment, but the realization that we are loved that changes us. God wants us to say yes to him. But he doesn't want to force us to obey him against our will. He wants us to freely choose to love and obey him. Our blessed mother did that. She surrendered. She gave her whole heart and her whole life to God. Let us profess our faith together. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic truth, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord. Lord, we share our prayer. This month's community prayer is for fathers, grandfathers, and protectors, that they may lead with wisdom and humility, inspired by the quiet faith of St. Joseph. We pray to the Lord. Heavenly Father, we are presented to you all of our needs. We ask you to grant them through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. For through your goodness, we receive the bread we offer you. Fruit of the earth and the work of the come for us the bread of life.
SPEAKER_04Blessed become for us.
SPEAKER_03Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. For through your goodness we receive the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. You'll become our spiritual drink. Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father. Be pleased, Almighty God, to accept your church's offering, so that she who is aware that her beginnings lie in the incarnation of your only begotten Son, may rejoice to celebrate his mysteries on this solemnity, who lives and reigns forever and ever. The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_09And with the Holy Spirit.
SPEAKER_03Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is truly right and just our duty and our salvation. Always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For the Virgin Mary heard with faith that the Christ was to be born among men, and for man's sake, by the overshadowing power of the Holy Spirit, lovingly she bore him in her immaculate womb, that the promises to the children of Israel might come about, and the hope of nations be accomplished beyond all telling. Through him the host of angels adores your majesty, and rejoices in your presence forever. May our voices re pray, join with theirs, in one chorus of exultant praise as we acclaim.
SPEAKER_05Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord Hosan.
SPEAKER_03You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy therefore these gifts we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the youthful, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread and giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you. More giving thanks. He gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.
SPEAKER_06The mystery of faith.
SPEAKER_05We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection until you come again.
SPEAKER_03Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly, we pray the partaking of the body and blood of Christ. We may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity. Together with Leo, our Pope, and Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection. And all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_06Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, for heaven and heaven.
SPEAKER_05Amen.
SPEAKER_03At the Savior's command informed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as you await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, to say to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not in our sins but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever.
SPEAKER_09Amen.
SPEAKER_03The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit. Let us offer each other the sign of peace.
SPEAKER_05Have mercy on us. Have mercy on us.
SPEAKER_03Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
SPEAKER_02Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_03Let us pray. Confirm in our minds the mysteries of the true faith, we pray, O Lord, so that confessing that He who was conceived of the Virgin Mary is true God and true man, we may, through the saving power of his resurrection, marry to attain eternal joy through Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Go in the peace of Christ.
SPEAKER_09Thanks be to God.
SPEAKER_01Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass.
