From the historic Loreto Abbey Chapel. With the kind cooperation of the Toronto Catholic District School Board, the National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I am Father Peter J. Choi. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from Eugenia from Calgary, Alberta. This Mass is offered in memory of her husband, John, who passed away on October 29, 2024. And thanksgiving for the Daily TV Mass and for all those who make it happen. Also for the return to the faith of their family members and for peace in the world. Our thanks to Eugenia for the gift of the televising of this Mass to the faithful of Canada, U.S., and around the world. My dear friends, as we continue our journey through Holy Week, I invite you to join us for two special reflections in place of the daily TV Mass on Good Friday and Holy Saturday. On Good Friday, please join me as we reflect on the Passion of our Lord according to the Gospel of John, contemplating the love that laid itself down for our salvation. On Holy Saturday, Father Ernie DiCiccio will lead us in a reflection titled, Blessed Are Those Who Mourn, as we keep vigil in the silence of the tomb, holding sorrow and hope together. Then on Easter Sunday, we warmly invite you and your family to join us for the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord, celebrating together the new life of Christ brings to the world. Let us begin in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
SPEAKER_07Amen.
SPEAKER_01The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
SPEAKER_02And with you.
SPEAKER_01Brothers and sisters, let us call to mind our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. I confess to Almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I ask Blessed Mary Ever Virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. Let us pray. O God, who willed your Son to submit for our sake to the yoke of the cross, so that you might drive from us the power of the enemy. Grant us your servants to attain the grace of the resurrection. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.
SPEAKER_00A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. The servant of the Lord said, The Lord God has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens. Wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious. I did not turn backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard. I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord God helps me. Therefore, I have not been disgraced. Therefore, I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. He who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord God who helps me. Who will declare me guilty? The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_06It is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that shame has covered my face. I have become a stranger to my kindred, an alien to my mother's children. It is zeal for your house that has consumed me. The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me. Lord in your great life answer me. Insults have broken my heart so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none. They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst, they gave me vinegar to drink. Lord, in your great life answer me. Let the oppressed see it and be glad. You who seek God, let your hearts revive, for the Lord is needy and does not despise his own that are in pass. Lord in your grace answer me. You alone showed mercy for our sins.
SPEAKER_01One of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, What will you give me if I betray Jesus to you? They paid him thirty pieces of silver, and from that moment he began to look for an opportunity to betray him. On the first day of unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying, Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the Passover? He said, Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, The teacher says, My time is near. I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples. So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover meal. When it was evening, Jesus took his place with the twelve. And while they were eating, he said, Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me. And they became greatly distressed, and began to say to him, one after another, Surely not I, Lord. He answered, The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. The Son of Man goes as it is written of him. But woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would have been better for that one not to have been born. Judas, who betrayed him, said, Surely not I, Rabbi. Jesus replied, You have said so. The gospel of the Lord. In the olden days, Wednesday of Holy Week was called Spy Wednesday. This is because Judas agreed to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver, and he began to look for an opportunity to betray him to the Sanhedrin, the Council of Jewish elders. We know the difference between a friend and a spy. A friend is someone whom you have a relationship with. And a spy is someone who pretends to be your friend, who betrays you by using information about you against you. Friend is a word we use very often. Surprisingly, friend is a very broad term. It can range from someone who we have no relationship with to our best friend and confidant. What do we call those who don't really know or barely know from the social media connections and casual acquaintances? We call them friends. What do you call people from within our professional contact that we maintain cordial and respectful relationships with, but more for business purposes? We call them friends too. How about people we are very close to? We know them and they know us very well. We like talking to them and hanging out with them. We also call them friends. How about the long-term, tested and true companions? We call them friends too. If you asked me, the gap between a casual acquaintance and a best friend is probably as wide as from here to the sun. There simply could be no comparison. We all know Jesus is God. He knows everything about us. He knows our thoughts, our intentions, and even our future actions we haven't committed yet. So when Judas brought the Roman soldiers and temple police to the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus already knew Judas was going to betray him. And yet, Jesus still called him friend. Jesus did not call him a traitor or a backstabber. Instead, Jesus called him a friend because that's how Jesus saw Judas. Even when Judas betrayed him, still Jesus didn't abandon his friendship with him. Do you remember Jesus teaching his disciples about the value of friendship? Jesus told him that there is no greater love than the one who lays down his life for his friends. He told his disciples that they were not servant his servants, but his friends. How about us? Are you where are you in your relationship with Jesus? Let us not forget, God isn't surprised by our struggles and weaknesses. He knows them even better than we do ourselves. He's God. And he's a merciful God who gives us a second chance. A few years ago, I came across a very moving story of Andre Norman, who transforms his life from being an inmate and illiterate to achieving his goal of attending Harvard University. Andre suffered through a very traumatic childhood. He grew up in a home marked by violence and poverty. He vividly recalls waking up to the haunting screams of his mother, a recurring victim of his father's violent outbursts. The scars of witnessing such trauma were deep, shaping Andre's worldview and molding his early experiences. Andre began selling drugs in middle school and became deeply entrenched in the life of crime and climbed all the way to the top as a gang leader. After a series of run-ins with the police, including armed robbery and eight counts of attempted murders, Andre was given a hundred-year prison sentence. While in prison, he even became a gang leader there, controlling contraband and the black market across multiple maximum security facilities. He wasn't afraid of anything. He wasn't even afraid of death because he didn't care about his life. During two and a half years in solitary confinement, he experienced an epiphany after witnessing his peers returning to jail even after their release. He made a life-altering decision. He didn't want to be in jail anymore. He wanted to get out of jail and never return. He decided that his past would no longer dictate his future. So he turned his life around with the goal of attending Harvard University. Andre began his process of self-education. He spent eight years working 20 hours a day educating himself. Soon, he was not just learning for himself, but teaching and mentoring fellow inmates. Andre's efforts did not go unnoticed. His transformation and the positive impact he had on the prison community caught the attention also of people outside of prison. He received a general education diploma and continued to study the law in prison. He appealed and won his case for release in 1999. After his release, Andre founded the Academy of Hope and second-chance university organizations to provide mentorship and education to those who are in prison. Today, Andre is well known for as the ambassador of hope, using his past as a stepping stone rather than a stumbling block. He serves as a beacon of hope, an inspiration to those who are still in darkness with an important message. Life will always throw us a curveball. And we may find ourselves beaten down and feeling defeated when that happens. Remember, the true friend we can find is in Jesus. You know, it wasn't only Judas who betrayed Jesus. Peter betrayed him too. He denied ever knowing him, not just once, but three times. The difference was their trust in God's mercy and love. Judas turned away from God and tragically ended his own life. Peter repented and turned to God. Despite his failing, Peter was given a second chance and became the first Pope. Jesus is and always will be our friend. All we have to do is to choose him and his friendship. For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord. For the month of April, our community prayers praise that all who are burdened by grief or discouragement may be lifted by the light of the risen Christ and renewed in hope. We pray to the Lord. We turn to our blessed Mother, Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Heavenly Father, we have presented to you all our needs. We ask that you grant them through Christ our Lord. Blessed are your Lord, God of all creation. Blessed are your Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we receive the wine we offer you. Fruit of the vine and work of human hands, will become our spiritual drink. Blessed is God.
SPEAKER_02Blessed be God forever.
SPEAKER_01Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty Father.
SPEAKER_07May the Lord accept the sacrifice with your hands, for the praise and glory of his name, for our ruler and all of his holy church.
SPEAKER_01Receive, O Lord, we pray, the offerings made here, and graciously grant that by celebrating your Son's passion and mystery, we may experience the grace of its effects through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_04And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_01Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, through Christ our Lord. For the days of His saving passion and glorious resurrection are approaching, by which the pride of the ancient foe is vanquished, and the mystery of our redemption in Christ is celebrated. Through him the host of angels adores your majesty and rejoices in your presence forever. May our voices free pray, join with theirs, in one chorus of exultant praise as we acclaim.
SPEAKER_06Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of all heaven and earth are full of your glory. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
SPEAKER_01Make holy therefore these gifts we pray, by sending now your spirit upon them like the youthful, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it. For this is my body, which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks. He gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.
SPEAKER_06Come again.
SPEAKER_01Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly, we pray the partaking of the body and blood of Christ. We may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, and Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_03Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, forever and heaven.
SPEAKER_06Amen.
SPEAKER_01At the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as you await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever.
SPEAKER_07Amen.
SPEAKER_01The peace of the Lord be with you always.
SPEAKER_04In the name of your spirit.
SPEAKER_01Let us offer each other the sign of peace.
SPEAKER_06You take away the sins of the world. You take away the sins of the world, mercy, you take away the sins of the hold the Lamb of God.
SPEAKER_01Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
SPEAKER_02My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_01Endow us, Almighty God, with the firm conviction that through your Son's death in time, to which the revered mysteries bear witness, we may be assured of perpetual life through Christ our Lord. Grant your faithful, O Lord, we pray to partake unceasingly of the past mysteries and to await with longing the gifts to come, but that persevering in the sacraments of their rebirth, they may be led by Lenten works to newness of life. God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Go in the peace of Christ.
SPEAKER_07We gather we stay with the Father. We gather with Jesus his son. We gather in faith with the spirit of God. We gather his love.
