Fr. Henk van Meijel, S.J.
From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Sunday TV Mass.
SPEAKER_07Welcome to the celebration of the Sunday TV Mass on the second Sunday of Easter and Divine Mercy Sunday. I'm Father Hank van Meyle. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from three donors. The first is the Langvin DeRosier family from Ontario, in loving memory of Diane. May your soul rest in eternal peace, in thanksgiving for blessings received, and for the living and deceased members of the families. The second is Esther from Mississauga, Ontario, in loving memory of her parents, Martha and Joseph and daughter Iris, for God's mercy for living and deceased family and friends, for the physical and spiritual healing of her family, and in thanksgiving for all the blessings and gifts received. May God the Father, his Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit be known, honored, and praised and loved by all humanity. The third are the John and Jacob families in thanksgiving for blessings received from God, or thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you. And as we have placed ourselves before the Lord on this Sunday, again recalling our own weakness, our own need for God's guidance. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart. Lord have mercy. You came to call sinners. Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. And on this Sunday we say together, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory. Lord God, Heavenly King, O God Almighty Father, Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. You take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us, for you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father. Amen. And let us pray. God of everlasting mercy, who in the very reoccurrence of the Paschal Feast, kindle the faith of the people you have made your own. Increase, we pray, the grace you have bestowed that all may grasp and rightly understand in what font they have been washed, by whose spirit they have been reborn, by whose blood they have been redeemed. True, O Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.
unknownAmen.
SPEAKER_00A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. They devoted themselves to the Apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Because many wonders and signs were being done by the Apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common. They would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all as any had need. Day by day, they spent much time together in the temple. They broke bread in various houses and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the good will of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_06In the tents of the righteous. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is God. His steadfast love endures forever.
SPEAKER_00A reading from the first letter of Saint Peter. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. By his great mercy, he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. A birth into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading kept in heaven for you who are being protected by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith being more precious than gold, that, though perishable, is tested by fire may be found to result in praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Although you have not seen him, you love him. And even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, for you are receiving the outcome of your faith. The salvation of your souls. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_07It was evening on the day Jesus rose from the dead, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. After he had said this, he showed them his hands and his sight. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them aga them again, Peace be with you, as the Father has sent me, so I sent you. When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them. If you retain the sins of any, they are retained. But Thomas, who was called the twin, one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his sight, I will not believe. After eight days his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my sight. Do not doubt, but believe. Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God. And Jesus said to him, Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe. Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book, but these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name, the Gospel of the Lord. There's much to be said about the readings today, but because of the time limits of TV, there's not much I can say. But of course, I can preach quite a bit about Thomas, the unbelieving Thomas who believed. But I would like to stick with the missioning of Jesus. Jesus actually, the first time he appears, he missions his disciples. And he says, and he missions them and he says, as the Father sent me, so I send you. Receive the Holy Spirit. And he literally blows. Receive the Holy Spirit. And the sins, the sins you forgive are forgiven, and the sins you retain, they are retained. But this missioning goes reverberates through the centuries, right to this day. And today we also celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday, instituted by John Paul II, Pope John Paul II, on April 28, 2000, where he canonized Sister Faustina, the mystic, who got these messages about Divine Mercy. And it is kind of she had these images these messages of Jesus, Jesus speaking to her. Finally, she could enter if she bought her own address basically. But when Father Suspoko, his her spiritual director, actually got involved, he sent her. And matter of fact, on April 28, 1935, they celebrated in her cloister the first Divine Mercy Sunday. And but over time there was a whole lot of stuff happening. It was suppressed by the Vatican for good reasons in the 50s because there had needed further investigations. But today, since 2000, we celebrate today that great feast of divine mercy, an ever-forgiving God, ever forgiving. And especially if we are worried about our souls. God will forgive. But unless we really reject God and we say we don't have nothing to do with God, that's a different thing. But if we show mercy, God will show infinite mercy. Amen. And on this Sunday, let us stand and let us profess of faith by using the words of the Apostles' Creed. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son or Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From there we will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. And let us bring our prayers before the Lord. We pray for all those in our Daily TV Mass Prayer Intention Book. We pray to the Lord.
SPEAKER_03Lord in our prayer.
SPEAKER_07For the month of April, our community prayer prays that all who are burdened by grief or discouragement may be uplifted by the light of the risen Christ and renewed in hope. We pray to the Lord. We pray for all who feel not worthy of a place in heaven, will trust the words spoken by Jesus to Sister Faustina and know that God's mercy is bountiful. We pray to the Lord. And for these prayers and the prayers in the silence of our own hearts, we lift them up to you, Lord. Amen. Accept, O Lord, we pray, the oblation of your people that, renewed by confessing of your name and by baptism, they may attain unending happiness through Christ, O Lord.
SPEAKER_03Amen.
SPEAKER_07The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_03And in your spirit.
SPEAKER_07Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation at all times to acclaim you, O Lord, but on this day above all to lord you yet more gloriously, when Christ or Passover has been sacrificed. For he is the true Lamb who has taken away the sins of the world. By dying he has destroyed our death, and by rising restored our life. Therefore, overcome with paschal joy, every land, every people exalts in your praise, and even the heavenly powers with the angeletic host sing together the unending hymn of your glory as they acclaim.
SPEAKER_06Holy, holy, holy love.
SPEAKER_07Make holy therefore these gifts you pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dew fall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread and giving you thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way when supper was ended, he took the chalice and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo or Pope, Francis or Bishop, the Order Bishops, the clergy, and the entire people you have called your own. Remember also our sisters and brothers who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all. We pray that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the Blessed Joseph, our spouse, with the Blessed Apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him. O God, Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever. Amen. And at the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, O Father, who are in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day your daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant our peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign for ever and ever.
SPEAKER_03Amen.
SPEAKER_07The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit. And let us offer each other a sign of peace. Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not ready that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
SPEAKER_01Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_07And let us pray. Grant we pray, Almighty God, that our reception of this Paschal Sacrament may have a continued effect in our minds and hearts through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Please bow your heads for a final blessing, and your response is Amen. May God, who by the resurrection of His only begotten Son, was pleased to confer on you the gift of redemption and of adoption, give you gladness by his blessings. Amen. May He, by whose redeeming work you have received the gifts of everlasting freedom, make you heirs to an eternal inheritance. Amen. And may you who have already risen with Christ in baptism through faith, by living in right manner on this earth, be united with him in the homeland of heaven. Amen. And may the blessings of Almighty God, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit come down on you and remain with you forever. Amen. Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. Thanks be to God.
SPEAKER_08Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this man.
