Msgr. Robert Nusca
From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Sunday TV Mass.
SPEAKER_07Welcome to the celebration of the Sunday TV Mass on this, the sixth Sunday of Easter. I'm Monsignor Robert Nuska. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contributions from three donors. The first is the Langevin de Rocher family from Ontario in loving memory of Diane. May her soul rest in eternal peace, in thanksgiving for blessings received, and for the living and deceased members of the families. The second is Christopher Brown, son of the late Mary G. Brown of Toronto, Ontario. This Mass is offered in sacred remembrance of Mary. The third is Carolyn McKay from Oakville, Ontario, in memory of her husband Philip and deceased family members for the souls in purgatory and for world peace. Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass. Today is also Mother's Day in Canada and many other countries. We remember all mothers who lovingly care for their families, and we also give thanks to all grandmothers whose actions and prayers sustain many families, and for all of our mothers who have died. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
SPEAKER_05And with your Spirit.
SPEAKER_07To celebrate worldly now the mystery of our faith, let us call to mind our sins and ask the Lord for pardon and for strength. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart, Lord have mercy. You came to call sinners, Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
SPEAKER_01Amen.
SPEAKER_07Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you. We give you thanks for your great glory. Lord God, Heavenly King, O God Almighty Father, Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. You take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Let us pray. Grant, Almighty God, that we may celebrate with heartfelt devotion these days of joy, which we keep in honor of the risen Lord, and that what we relive in remembrance may we may always hold to in what we do. To our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever. Amen.
SPEAKER_00A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. In those days, Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed the Christ to them. The crowds with one accord listened eagerly to what was said by Philip, hearing and seeing the signs that he did. For unclean spirits crying with loud shrieks came out of many who were possessed, and many others who were paralyzed or lame were cured. So there was great joy in that city. Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. The two went down and prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For as yet the Spirit had not come upon any of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit, the word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_04Make a joyful noise to God all the earth. Sing the glory of his name. Give to him glorious praise. Say to God how awesome are your deeds. Make a joyful noise to God all the earth. All the earth worships you. Sing praises to your name. Come and see what God has done. He is awesome in his deeds among the children of Adam. Make a joyful noise to God all the earth. He turned the sea into dry land, they passed to the river on foot, there we rejoiced in him who rules by his might forever. Make a joyful noise to God all the earth.
SPEAKER_00A reading from the first letter of Saint Peter. Beloved, in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience clear, so that when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God's will, than to suffer for doing evil. For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_07Jesus said to his disciples, If you love me, you will keep my commandments, and I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him because he abides with you, and he will be in you. I will not leave you orphaned. I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in the Father, and you in me, and I in you. The one who has my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me, and the one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them. The Gospel of the Lord. As we continue our Easter journey and prepare to celebrate the Feast of the Ascension next Sunday, and a Pentecost in two weeks, the Sunday's Gospel is taken from our Lord's so-called farewell discourse. This is found only in the Gospel of John. And in this lengthy address to the disciples at the Last Supper, Jesus aims now to prepare them for his departure from this world. And in this, again, farewell discourse, we're led to contemplate the words of a very mystical, cosmic, otherworldly Jesus, who, as St. John shows us, is nothing less than the logos, this wisdom of God, the word made flesh. Or as we've heard, Jesus offers a very consoling, I think, hope-filled message as he reassures his followers that he will not abandon them. And I think that several things emerge for our reflection. First, as Jesus assures his disciples that he will not leave them as orphans, he promises to send them now another paraclete or advocate to a system, referring, of course, to the Holy Spirit. Here it's important to note that when Jesus speaks of sending the disciples another paraclete or another advocate, he's clearly implying that he himself is our first paraclete. Now the word itself has in fact a number of shades of meaning derived from the language of the legal system of our Lord's time. In the first instance, the paraclete or advocate is a person who offers guidance and assistance. At the same time, the word can also be translated counselor or comforter who helps a person in a time of difficulty. Indeed, in the first letter of John, we read that Jesus is our advocate, our mediator with God the Father. Jesus is the righteous one who pleads our case before God in heaven, seeking forgiveness for our sinfulness. On the other hand, the role of the Holy Spirit will be to abide both in and with the faithful on earth, and so continue the saving work of Christ, both in the church and in the world. Second, our Lord calls us not only to follow his teachings, to imitate him in our interactions with one another, but through the power of the Holy Spirit working in us, he leads us now to become a new creation in Christ. A new creation. Here St. Basil the Great comments that through the Holy Spirit we are restored to paradise. We ascend to the kingdom of heaven. We are thus called children of light, as we come to share in eternal glory, in short, in every elevated thing that we can name or conceive, this is accomplished in and through us by the Paraclete. In his letter, St. Paul speaks then of our being radically transformed in the depths of our being, as we come to share in the mystery of Christ's own nature and become truly Christ-like with regard to the ongoing process of growth in the spiritual life. St. Paul reminds us in his letter to the Ephesians of the need to cast off the old self, to strive always to be renewed in the spirit of our minds, and in doing so always to strive to put on that new self created to be like God in all righteousness and in all holiness. The means of sanctification are given to us. The sacrament of confession, a frequent reception of the Eucharist, a time of daily prayer, fasting, asceticism, a daily act of will by which we choose to stand with God and with Jesus Christ, with the power of the good against the forces of evil. A consecration to Jesus through Mary. In all of these ways, we see how the radical call by name to leave everything behind and follow Jesus proves ultimately to be a call to something more than servanthood, much more than servants, much more than friends. Jesus calls us now to become members of a new spiritual family. So ultimately to enter onto the road of a profound lifelong journey of great spiritual transformation. Far too often ignored are our Lord's words in the context preceding today's gospel, where he says that whoever believes in me will do the works that I have been doing, and they will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. Saints Irenaeus, Saint Augustine, Thomas Aquinas all articulate clearly the Church's teaching here that God became what we are in order that we might become what he is. This idea stated very clearly in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 460, where we read that the Word became flesh to make us partakers of the divine nature. More recently, Saint José Maria Escriva leads us to reflect upon our baptismal call to holiness as he writes that each of us is to be here in Latin ipse Christus, that is Christ Himself in this passing world. Our calling to be children of God then in the midst of the world requires us, he writes, not only to seek our own personal holiness, but also to go out onto all the ways of the earth to transform them into roads that will carry souls over all obstacles and lead them to the Lord. Third, while the Holy Spirit functions as counselor, strengthening and guiding us to the truth, he also reminds us of our Lord's teachings and strengthens us to proclaim the gospel. Indeed, the Spirit inspires us to proclaim the truth boldly before a world that is and has always been hostile to the message of the gospel. So Jesus sends us forth into the world as his representatives, indeed as ambassadors. And what a great challenge that is for us today. Its understanding of goodness is divorced from the reality of our transcendent God. Its understanding of freedom is so radically different in our own in this postmodern post-truth era. Here, Pope Benedict reminds us that true freedom, the freedom of the children of God, is found only in self-surrender. The self-surrender, which is part of the mystery of love. True freedom blossoms when we turn away from the burden of sin, which clouds our perceptions and weakens our resolve. And when we find the source of our ultimate happiness in God, who is infinite love, infinite freedom, and infinite life. So as we continue to celebrate this Mass and to give thanks to God for so many graces today, let us pray for the grace to live our lives as people who are a new creation in Christ. Let us pray for the grace to always be a priestly royal people, a people who are called, consecrated, and sent out by God to live the gospel to the full, and so continue doing God's own work on earth, and as Jesus says us, says, to bear fruit, fruit that will last. Let us join together now as we pray the apostles' creed. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Power, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into heaven. On the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the blessing.
unknownAmen.
SPEAKER_07Let us now present our prayers and petitions to God in heaven. Let us pray for all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord.
unknownLord your prayer.
SPEAKER_07Throughout this month of May, may our community, as our community prays to follow the example of Mary by offering joy, compassion, and mercy, especially to mothers, grandmothers, and all who lovingly serve those in need, we pray to the Lord. Lord year prayers. And for all those intentions that we remember now in the silence of our own hearts. For these intentions, we pray to the Lord. Lord Heavenly Father, you know the needs of your passing, of these of our people in this passing life. We ask you to hear the prayers we've made and those that remain deep within our hearts, for we make them all through Christ our Lord.
SPEAKER_05Amen.
SPEAKER_07May our prayers rise up to you, O Lord, together with the sacrificial offerings, so that purified by your graciousness, we may be conformed to the mysteries of your mighty love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation, at all times to acclaim you, O Lord, but in this time above all to laud you yet more gloriously, when Christ our Passover has been sacrificed. He never ceases to offer himself for us, but defends us and ever pleads our cause before you. He is the sacrificial victim who dies no more, the Lamb once slain who lives forever. Therefore, overcome with paschal joy, every land, every people exults in your praise. Even the heavenly powers with the angelic hosts sing together the unending hymn of your glory as they acclaim.
SPEAKER_04Holy, holy, holy loved God of all.
SPEAKER_07In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
SPEAKER_04And profess your resurrection until you come again.
SPEAKER_07Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles, and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever.
SPEAKER_04Amen.
SPEAKER_05At the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
SPEAKER_06Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation.
SPEAKER_07Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ. Now and forever and forever. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, Peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. The peace of the Lord be with you always. Let us extend to those around us a sign of the peace of Christ.
SPEAKER_04Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us, Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world.
SPEAKER_07Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
SPEAKER_01My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_07Almighty, ever-living God, who restore us to eternal life in the resurrection of Christ, increase in us, we pray, the fruits of this paschal sacrament, and pour into our hearts the strength of the saving food. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. May Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Go forth, the Mass is ended.
SPEAKER_05Thanks be to God.
SPEAKER_01Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass.
