From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_02In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of the Father, the friendship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
SPEAKER_05And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_02Welcome to the celebration of the Daily Televised Mass. I am Father Michael Coots. The televising of this Mass is made possible for a contribution from two donors. The first is T.S. from Ajax, Ontario, a happy birthday to Anita. In Thanksgiving for blessings received, good health for our family members, speedy recovery for those with illness, and for the success of her son-in-law's business, also for the faithful departed and the souls in purgatory. The second is an anonymous donor from Ontario in support and gratitude for the daily TV Mass. And now as we begin our Eucharist, as we're coming to the end of this Easter season and soon into Pentecost, we ask the Holy Spirit to come down upon us in all its majesty. You were sent to heal the contrite, Lord, have mercy. You came to call sinners Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord, have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
SPEAKER_04Amen.
SPEAKER_02Let us pray. O God, who by the glorification of your Christ and the light of the Holy Spirit have unlocked for us the gates of eternity. Grant that partaking of so great a gift, our devotion may grow deeper and our faith be strengthened. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.
unknownAmen.
SPEAKER_00A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. The tribune who had arrested Paul sent him to Caesarea to be tried by Felix, the governor. After two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Portius Festus. And since he wanted to grant the Jews a favor, Felix left Paul in prison. King Agrippa and Berenice arrived at Caesarea to welcome Festus. Since they were staying there several days, Festus laid Paul's case before the king, saying, There is a man here who was left in prison by Felix. When I was in Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me about him and asked for a sentence against him. I told them that it was not the custom of the Romans to hand over anyone before the accused had met the accusers face to face and had been given an opportunity to make a defense against the charge. So when they met here, I lost time, but on the next day took my seat on the tribunal and ordered the man to be brought. When the accusers stood up, they did not charge him with any of the crimes that I was expecting. Instead, they had certain points of disagreement with him about their own religion and about a certain Jesus who had died, but whom Paul asserted to be alive. Since I was at a loss how to investigate these questions, I asked whether he wished to go to Jerusalem and be tried there on these charges. But when Paul had appealed to be kept in custody for the decision of his Imperial Majesty, I ordered him to be held until I could send him to the Emperor. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_03Bless the Lord all my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord all my soul. And do not forget all his benefits. So great is dead first love to feel as far as this is from us. So far he removes our transgressions from us. And remind you of all I have said to you.
SPEAKER_02Jesus said, Feed my lambs. A second time Jesus said to him, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter said to him, Yes, Lord, you know I love you. Jesus said to him, Tend my sheep. The third time Jesus said to him, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter felt hurt because Jesus said to him a third time, Do you love me? And Peter said to him, Lord, you know everything, you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep. Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you used to fasten your own belt and go wherever you wished, but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go. Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. After this, Jesus said to him, Follow me. The Gospel of the Lord. Jesus said in his gospel, You will be persecuted because of me. You will be brought before governors, rulers, and kings. Our first reading from the Acts of the Apostle, Paul fulfills two of these. He is brought before Governor Felix, and now after two years, he is before Governor Festus, who has as his guest King Agrippa and his sister Berenice. They are brought before Paul was brought before them. Now, Paul was brought on the first case because he brought Gentiles into Jerusalem. And when he brought them into the temple, there were going to be a riot, and therefore the Roman guards and Roman soldiers came down and arrested him. Now suddenly, when they're brought, Paul is brought before the king and before Governor Festus, they seem to change canoes in midstream. They change it from a political accusation to a religious accusation. Namely, they speak about Jesus, his passion, his death, and resurrection. And Festus says, this is beyond my pay scalary, my salary. I cannot work with this. I don't even know what they are talking about. Paul was brought before Felix. Now, Caesarea was not a plum situation where governors wanted to be governors in Jerusalem and in Palestine. It was one that they would hope to have on their resume in order to go to another place altogether. And so when Felix decided that he couldn't handle this case, he decided to just leave him, like most politicians do. When they can't handle their case, they just hand it over to their successor. And so here we have Paul in prison. He's been there for two years, and I think he's becoming a little tired because he wants to go out and proclaim the good news. And so he appeals to the emperor. Now, Festus brings Paul before King Agrippa and he says, Look, I would have just dismissed this case, but because he appealed to the emperor, I have to keep him in custody until I can find a way to send him to Rome so he can appeal his case before the high court of the emperor. Now, Paul was not an ordinary prisoner. You know, the ordinary prisoners like thieves and murderers are put into jail with the rest of the people. But because he was a Roman citizen, he was put in a special place. Some 20, 30, 20 or 15 years ago, I visited the Holy Land and was taken to Jericho. And in Jericho, which is in Palestine, there is the prisoner in which the Jews put their prisoners. And the guide said to me, you know, this prison is where we have all prisoners, both Jews and Palestinians. Now we've got two presidents and one prime minister there. Can't remember whether he said two, one president and two prime ministers. He says, over here, if you do a crime, it does not matter if you're the president or prime minister, you're thrown in jail. But we don't put them with the rest of the people, we put them separately lest they get beaten up. And so too, Paul was kept separately. And so Paul is over here. Although he's in, he's free to do whatever he likes, he's still in chain. And he wants to keep on evangelizing. He preaches about Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. So much so that King Agrippa says, What is it, Paul? You want to convert me to your religion? And Paul says, Yes, I want you to be just like me, apart from the chains that I'm wearing. In two days' time, we will be celebrating Pentecost. We've done with Paul, and now in the gospel we deal with Peter. Peter had denied Jesus in front of a fire a fireplace in the courtyard of Caiaphas. Now he is before another fireplace, but this time not in Jerusalem, but on the shores of Galilee. Jesus has made a place for them. He's feeding them breakfast. And there they are, seven of them, eight of them. And Jesus asked Peter, Do you love me? Not once, not twice, but three times. Peter had denied Jesus three times during that period of the trial. And Jesus was not rubbing salt into the wounds. But Jesus saw this as a way of healing. By acknowledging not once, not twice, but three times, that you had denied me, but now that you loved me, I know that you love me and you love me deeply. So Jesus is not going back on a promise that he had made very close to where they were meeting at that time. Little further up on the lake of Galilee was a place called Caesarea Philippi. And at that time Jesus said, Who do people say that I am? And Peter said, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus blessed him and said, Blessed are you, Peter, because you're open to the Father. And because of that, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church. Peter had denied Jesus three times, but now he had affirmed his love for Jesus. And as we celebrate Pentecost in a few days' time, we asked the Lord to give us that same grace. After the ascension, Jesus had said to the apostles, stay in Jerusalem. And nine days later was Pentecost. This is the first novena we have of prayer within our church with a biblical foundation. And now Jesus is going to affirm Peter as the head of his church. And as Saint Bonavert just said, Jesus would not hand his church just to somebody who loves, but to somebody who loves deeply. God bless you all. Would you join me now as we pray together? For the Pope's intention in this month of May that everyone might have food, we pray that everyone, from large producers to small consumers, be committed to avoid wasting food and to ensure that everyone has access to quality food. We pray to the Lord. For the sponsors of the Mass today, T.S. from Ajax, and from our anonymous sponsor from Ontario, we pray that the Lord may bless them and grant them peace. We pray to the Lord. During this month of May, our community prays to follow the example of Mary by offering joy, compassion, and mercy, especially to mothers and grandmothers, and all who lovingly serve those in need. We pray to the Lord. For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intention Book, we pray to the Lord. Loving God, accept the prayers that we have made in the name of Jesus, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.
unknownAmen.
SPEAKER_02Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we have this bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands. It will become for us the bread of life. Humble Himself to share it in humanity. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. For through your goodness we have this wine we offer you. Fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become for us our spiritual drink.
SPEAKER_04Blessed be God, prayer.
SPEAKER_02Lord God, be pleased to accept these gifts that we offer to you with humble and with contrite heart. Wash me my iniquities and cleanse me from my sins. Thank you. Pray, my sisters and my brothers, that this our sacrifice be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father. Let us pray. Look mercifully, O Lord, upon the sacrificial gifts of your people, that they may become acceptable to you. Let the coming of the Holy Spirit cleanse our conscience through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you and with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks. Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, for the Lord Jesus Christ, the King of glory, conqueror of sin and death, ascended to the highest heavens as the angels gazed in wonder, mediator between God and all of us, Judge of the world and the Lord of hosts. Jesus ascended not to distance himself from our lowly state, but that we, his members, might be confident of following where he, our head and fall and founder, has gone. Therefore, overcome with Easter joy, every land, every people exalts in your praise, and even the heavenly powers with the angelic host sing together the unending hymn of your glory as they acclaim.
SPEAKER_03Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of host, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
SPEAKER_02At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread and giving you thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me, the mystery of faith.
SPEAKER_03We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection until you come again.
SPEAKER_02Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world. Bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Francis, our bishop, all the clergy and this entire people of God. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph. Spouse, with the blessed apostle, and with all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and may praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ. Through him with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever. At the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we now dare to say, Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our day, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin, safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of this, your church. Graciously grant a peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. Peace of the Lord be with you always. Let us share with one another a sign of this peace and friendship.
SPEAKER_03Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world.
SPEAKER_02Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed. May the body and blood of Christ bring us and all our dear ones unto life everlasting.
SPEAKER_01My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you, now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_02Grant that this banquet which you give us may bring everlasting life through Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you. May Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Go in the peace of Christ. Hallelujah, hallelujah.
SPEAKER_05Thanks be to God.
SPEAKER_01Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this month.
