SPEAKER_03

From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.

SPEAKER_02

Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I'm Father Peter Turona. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contributions from our donors. The first are Michael and Bernard et Dario from Maple, Ontario, in celebration of their 30th wedding anniversary on June 8th, and the thanksgiving for answered prayers and blessings received. The second is in memory of Manuel Morea of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, who enjoyed watching the Daily TV Mass each morning with his wife until his passing on May 3rd, 2022. The Daily TV Mass Ministry is made possible by the generous contributions of all our donors and in a special way our monthly donors. During this month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, let us pray for healing in families that Christ's mercy may renew our hearts and restore our relationships. Our thanks to our donors for the gift of the Mass. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you.

SPEAKER_06

And with your Spirit.

SPEAKER_02

Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. I confess to Almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do. Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I ask Blessed Mary of a Virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. Lord have mercy.

SPEAKER_06

Lord have mercy.

SPEAKER_02

Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. Let us pray. Grant, Lord God, that we your servants may rejoice in the unfailing health of mind and body, and through the glorious intercession of Blessed Mary, ever virgin, may we be set free from present sorrow and come to enjoy eternal happiness. For our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.

SPEAKER_06

Amen.

SPEAKER_00

Convince, rebuke, and encourage with the utmost patience in teaching. For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths. As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully. As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. From now on, there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_04

Do not cast me off in the time of old age. Do not forsake me when my strength is spent. I will sing of your salvation. But I will hope continually and will praise you yet more and more. My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all day long. I will sing of your salvation. I will come praising the mighty deeds of the Lord God. I will praise your righteousness, yours alone. O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. I will sing of your salvation. The kingdom of heaven is alleluia.

SPEAKER_02

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. When Jesus was teaching the crowd, he said, Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets. They devour widows' houses, and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation. Jesus sat down opposite the treasury and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. Then he called his disciples and said to them, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on. The gospel of the Lord. But she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all that she had to live on. Very often, when people speak about this parable, which Jesus is speaking about here, and this example of seeing this woman, oftentimes it's presented as being something that people should be doing. So what do I mean by that? Well, that Jesus is praising this woman who has nothing, who's living in abject poverty, he's praising her for her actions. So is he actually praising her? Is this something that Jesus is encouraging her to do? Uh is this something that Jesus is encouraging people that are homeless, people that have nothing? So if they have one little thing, are they called to give that out to someone else? Is this really what the Lord wants? Or is there something else that's going on? I think the beginning of the gospel from today helps put this in perspective. Jesus says, beware of scribes who like to walk around. Again, they want to walk around because they want the esteem of people. So the long prayers are not the problem. The problem is that they're praying, uh, not because they want to worship God, but it's because they're doing this so that people can think they're holy and they can profit from them, take advantage of the people that are poor, and take the two pennies that they have to their name and to rob them. That's not a good thing. And I don't believe that this is what Jesus is praising the situation. He's condemning them. He says, in fact, they're going to receive a greater condemnation. So he's rejecting and criticizing a system, a corrupt religious system that had developed. That's not the way it was supposed to be. Of course, everybody is called to give. And we can't be paternalistic. So Mother Teresa used to say, look, with the people that you work with, the people that were very poor, when you would give them something, they would always put something aside for their neighbor. That's an act of true charity. That's true religion. But not to use religion to instrumentalize it for personal gain when God is not part of the story. That is a horrible thing. And at the same time, again, the Lord is encouraging, right? He's encouraging, he's saying that all of us are called to give in certain ways. I'll tell you a story, and this is something that taught me a big lesson. So when we're in Mongolia in the missions, so we never used to do a collection because our people had nothing. They were very poor. So one day they go into the city, they go down to Ulambatad, so they go to the cathedral there for mass, and they see they're passing around baskets and they're doing a collection. So they came to the superior of the mission and they said, I go, how come we're not doing this? They said, we want to be able to do this as well. We want to be able to give what we have. So we always learn lessons. We're not always there to teach, but God wants to teach us things as well. So we started doing a collection. And I have to tell you, it's this it's a beautiful thing. So at the end of the day, when they're they're counting, and there would be 25 cents, like a few 25 cents Canadian pretty much inside the basket. But there was a certain pride when the people came to offer it to the pastor because they felt that they were contributing. That's a good thing, but it's not something that should be instrumentalized or forced onto someone where somebody who has nothing has to give even the little things that they have. So that's the that's what the problem is. And we can see this. We can see this all around the world. This is not something that's just related, again, to the time of the scribes. We can see this uh uh even recently in terms of some Christians that are going around and then they proclaim this prosperity gospel. Or I cringe when I've ever seen some televangelists or gone or heard some other people speaking, and they'll say, you know, uh, give us money, you know, like uh give money, give money, give money, and the Lord will bless you. So it's almost like this magical formula, and then you see how they live, and it's like, well, wait a minute. So instead of caring for all these poor people, you're taking everything they have from them, you're taking advantage for your own purpose. There's a great condemnation that's going to come from that. And the Lord wants us to have a change of heart and a change of mentality. Again, it's not that only the rich should give. Everybody's called to give to their capacity, but the system itself was corrupt. And there also today, there also has to be a better way of looking at this and how we approach this. And in this reading from Paul's letter to Timothy, again, he helps us to understand what is the how we're called to preach, how we're called to pray to God. And it has to do with glorifying him. So the needs, the necessities that we have for the church, always caring for the poor. We see this in the beginning, right? If you go back and you look at the Didakai, it talks about how they would pass the basket around, the teaching of the 12 apostles, and then people would give what they could. So usually it was the rich who had more, so they would give, but nobody was excluded. And then that was there for the kingdom. That was there for helping the poorest of the poor. Again, we see we can just see this when you read the Acts of the Apostles, how these things come about. And it's a beautiful way, but it's not that money, again, for the scribes, for these scribes, it was money. That was the most important thing. So they were using religion for their own gain. And that is the worst thing, because by doing that you lose eternal life. We're supposed to lose ourselves and in God and to glorify Him. And this is why Paul tells Timothy, he says, what's what matters the most is to preach the Lord, be persistent in time, favorable and unfavorable, convince, rebuke, encourage with the utmost patience and teaching. The time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but they have itchy ears, and they'll accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires. So you can see this. But if I hear, and as I've heard from some non-Catholic preachers, they'll say, you know, it's if you want to be blessed, if you want to be blessed, okay, hold on, what is what is the blessing? Well, they never talk about suffering. Suffering doesn't exist in their preaching. So when there's no cross in their preaching, there's something seriously wrong there. Because St. Paul says we preach Christ crucified. It's the first thing. And then the second thing, again, is we want to preach the truth. And at times that's going to make people uncomfortable, and people are going to walk away. And they may even walk away with their money. So what? God provides. What matters is for all of us, for the church, is to be faithful to the Father, to the Son, to the Holy Spirit, to the deposit of faith that's been given to us to proclaim the truth. And those who are really want to hear it, to understand it and live it, they will understand. And God in his providence will provide. Now for the church, and most especially for his poor. So for those who have very little, they don't have to give the little things that they have, just that, and then they remain even more destitute. But we have the responsibility and the privilege to be able to help them as well. Because true religion is to provide for those who have not. First, they come to know the love of God, and also to give them the nourishment they need for their bodies, so they can be strong in worshiping God as well. Let us now turn to the Lord and pray on behalf of the church and those who are crying out to him, those who are poorest of the poor and who have no one to help them. With all our heart and our mind, let us pray to the Lord. Let us lay a request before him, saying, Hear our prayer. Lord, hear our prayer. For the Holy Catholic Church, for our Pope, and for all the bishops, priests, and deacons, and all the religious and all those who seek holiness. We pray to the Lord. Lord hear our prayer. For an end to violence perpetrated by harsh words, deadly weapons, or cold indifference. May our homes, our nation, and our countries around the world become havens of peace. We pray to the Lord.

Lord your prayer.

SPEAKER_02

For the grace to never use instrumentalize our religion for personal gain, but to be used by God for His glory. For this we pray to the Lord. God of light, to live in your house is the desire of all your children. Hear our prayers and help us in all their needs through Christ our Lord. For through your goodness, we have received the bread we offer you. The fruit of the earth and work of human hands will become for us the bread of life. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we are received, the wine we offer you, the fruit of the vine and work of human hands, you'll become our spiritual drink. Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father. May the humanity of your only begotten Son come, O Lord, to our aid, and may he who at his birth from the Blessed Virgin did not diminish but consecrated her integrity by taking from us now our wicked deeds. Make our ablation acceptable to you through Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is truly right and just our duty and our salvation to praise your mighty deeds in the exaltation of all the saints, and especially as we celebrate the memory of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to proclaim your kindness as we echo her thankful hymn of praise. For truly, even to earth's ends, you have done great things, and extended your abundant mercy from age to age. When you looked on the lowliness of your handmaid, you gave us through her the author of our salvation, your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Through him the host of angels adores your majesty, and rejoices in your presence forever. May our voices we pray join with theirs, and one chorus of exaltant praises we acclaim.

SPEAKER_04

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. O sanna in the yest blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

SPEAKER_02

Make holy, therefore, these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it. For this is my body, which will be given up for you. He gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, and Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, who blessed Joseph, our spouse, with the blessed apostles, and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God, Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever. At the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, Peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of our church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always.

SPEAKER_06

And with your spirit.

SPEAKER_02

Let us offer each other the sign of peace. Peace, peace.

SPEAKER_04

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world.

SPEAKER_02

Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

SPEAKER_03

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you, now and forever. Amen.

SPEAKER_02

As we receive this heavenly sacrament, we beseech the Lord your mercy, that we who rejoice in commemorating the Blessed Virgin Mary may by imitating her serve worthily the mystery of our redemption through Christ our Lord.

SPEAKER_06

Amen.

SPEAKER_02

The Lord be with you.

SPEAKER_06

And with your spirit.

SPEAKER_02

May Almighty God bless you. The Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Go in peace.

SPEAKER_03

Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass.
