Bishop Gerard Bergie
From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I am Bishop Gerard Bergey. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from the beneficiaries of the Ao Young Family Trust of Calgary, Alberta. This Mass is offered for the living and deceased members of the Ao Young, Chan, Palmer, and Yuan families. We know that this television mass brings meaning to the lives of tens of thousands of Canadians across our land and around the world. And they join with me in thanking the Ao Young family for the gift of this holy mass. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
SPEAKER_03Amen.
SPEAKER_01Peace be with you.
SPEAKER_03And with your Spirit.
SPEAKER_01Let us now prepare ourselves to worthily celebrate the sacred mysteries by calling to mind the times that we have sinned. You are sent to heal the contrite of heart, Lord have mercy.
SPEAKER_07Lord have mercy.
SPEAKER_01You came to call sinners, Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us, Lord have mercy.
SPEAKER_03Lord have mercy.
SPEAKER_01May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Let us pray. O God, who prepared a fit dwelling for the Holy Spirit in the heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary, graciously grant that through her intercession we may be a worthy temple of your glory, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen.
SPEAKER_00A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. The descendants of the just shall be known among the nations and their offspring among the peoples. All who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the Lord has blessed. I will greatly rejoice in the Lord. My whole being shall exalt in my God. For he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_08The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble gird on strength. Those who are full have hired themselves for bread, but those who are hungry are fat with spoil. The baron has borne seven, but she has many children, is forlorn. My heart rejoices in the Lord my savior. The Lord kills and brings to life. He brings down to shale and raises up. The Lord makes poor and makes rich. He brings low, he also exalts. My heart rejoices in the Lord my savor, alleluya, aleluya, blessed is the Virgin Mary who kept the word of God and pondered it in her heart.
SPEAKER_01The Lord be with you, and with your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Every year the parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when Jesus was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. When the festival was ended, and the parents started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was in the group of travelers, they went a day's journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found Jesus in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety. Jesus said to them, Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my father's house? But they did not understand what he said to them. Then Jesus went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to Joseph and Mary. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. The gospel of the Lord. My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today the church celebrates the feast in honor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, but also it celebrates the feast in honor of Saint Anthony of Padova. The older I get, the more I find myself invoking the intercession of this saint because I am misplacing things quite often. It reminds me of a story of an elderly man who tells his priest that he thinks about the hereafter many times a day. Oh, really, said the priest. That is very wise. He responded, it is not a matter of wisdom. It's when I walk into a room or open a drawer or a closet, I ask myself, what am I hereafter? Certainly we can all identify with that. Saint Anthony is a Franciscan saint, a contemporary of St. Francis of Assisi, who was noted for his holiness and as a great preacher and teacher. Also, he is the patron saint of lost and stolen items. The reason for this is based on an incident in his own life. As the story goes, he had a favorite book of Psalms that was very important to him. As this was before the invention of the printing press, the book was handwritten and was very valuable and precious to him. And he even notated it with his own thoughts in the margins of the Psalter. He was a man of great faith and was sad when the book went missing. And the story tells us it was a novice who left the order who took the book. Saint Anthony prayed that that book would return, and shortly after the novice returned with the book and sought Anthony's forgiveness, which was given. This certainly indicates why we pray to Saint Anthony when something is lost with a hope it's found. The theme of finding something that was lost can also be seen in our gospel from Saint Luke. It is the account of finding Jesus in the temple. The Holy Family goes to Jerusalem for the Passover, and on the journey home, Mary thinks that Jesus is traveling with Joseph, and Joseph thinks that Jesus is traveling with Mary. An honest mistake. Mary told Jesus how much he had upset both her and Joseph, and he responded by stating that he had to be in his father's house. The last sentence of this gospel is significant. It states, Then Jesus went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. Obedience is not a word that we often hear these days. The word has Latin roots. It combines ob towards or to, and audire, to hear, highlighting a root meaning of listening attentively. So obedience is rooted with listening. We naturally think this applies to children, like Jesus in the gospel. However, from a spiritual perspective, we must also see ourselves as adults who need to be obedient to God, to Jesus. Jesus was obedient to Mary and Joseph, and Mary and Joseph were obedient to God. At the Annunciation, she told the angel Gabriel, Here I am, the servant of the Lord, let it be done to me according to your word. Obedience is listening. And we also note that Mary treasured all of these things in her heart. She listened not simply with her ears, but with her heart. When it comes to God, if we do not focus on our hearts, we will not comprehend or understand fully.
unknownSt.
SPEAKER_01John Henry Newman had a famous motto, cor et cor locketur. This simply means heart speaks to heart. The heart of God speaks to our hearts. And here we come to know God's will for us, and we try our best to be obedient to that will. The language of the heart is love. And this is what we celebrate, especially on this feast day dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and in the month of June, this month dedicated to the sacred heart of Jesus. The holy hearts of Mary and Jesus teach us not only love, but how to be obedient. For one of the greatest signs that we love God is to do God's will. On this great feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and on the feast of Saint Anthony, we cannot forget love. We cannot forget the heart of Jesus. We cannot forget the heart of Mary. We must always remember with great joy and respond with obedient hearts. May God bless you. Let us now turn to the Lord with confident prayer, as members of the church, standing and united in faith, and ask for the needs of the whole world and for our local community. Our response will be: we pray to the Lord.
SPEAKER_07Lord, we pray to the Lord.
SPEAKER_01For Pope Leo, all bishops, priests, and all faithful, may the Lord strengthen them to preach the gospel with courage and to serve with charity, so that through the intercession of Saint Anthony of Padua and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, we may be brought closer to Jesus Christ our Lord. Lord, we are our prayer. For those who govern, may God guide them with wisdom and justice, so that laws and institutions may protect human dignity, promote the common good, and work for peace among peoples, we pray to the Lord.
SPEAKER_07Lord, hear our prayer.
SPEAKER_01For those in need and those who are sick, lonely, grieving, or oppressed by any kind of hardship, may we recognize Christ in them and respond with concrete works of mercy. We pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer. For healing in families, that during this month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Christ's mercy may renew our hearts and restore our relationships. We pray to the Lord.
SPEAKER_07Lord, hear our prayer.
SPEAKER_01For those in our daily TV mask community and those in the prayer intention book, we pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer. For the faithful departed, may the souls of the faithful departed, and especially those in need of mercy, may they rest in peace and enjoy the light of God's presence both now and forever. Amen. Merciful Father, receive these prayers from the assembly you have gathered, and grant that what we ask in faith we may receive in love. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands, and will become for us our spiritual drink. Cleanse me from my sin.
unknownThank you.
SPEAKER_01Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.
SPEAKER_03May the Lord accept sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy church.
SPEAKER_01Look, O Lord, upon the prayers and offerings of your faithful, presented in commemoration of Blessed Mary, the Mother of God, that they may be pleasing to you and may confer on us your help and forgiveness through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your Spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere, to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, and Eternal God, and to praise and bless and glorify your name on this feast of the Blessed Ever Virgin Mary. For by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit, she conceived your only begotten Son, and without losing the glory of virginity, brought forth into the world the eternal light, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him the angels praise your majesty, dominions adore and powers tremble before you. Heaven and the virtues of heaven in the blessed seraphim worship together with exaltation. May our voices we pray join with theirs in humble praise as we acclaim.
SPEAKER_08Holy, holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest Hanna in the highest.
SPEAKER_01You are indeed holy, O Lord, and all you have created rightly gives you praise. For through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power and working of the Holy Spirit, you give life to all things and make them holy, and you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting, a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name. Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you by the same Spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration, that they may become the body and blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate these mysteries. For on the night he was betrayed, he himself took bread, and giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and giving you thanks, he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.
SPEAKER_08When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again.
SPEAKER_01Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your Son, his wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to his second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. Look, we pray, upon the oblation of your church, and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself, grant that we who are nourished by the body and blood of your Son and filled with His Holy Spirit may become one body, one spirit in Christ. May He make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain An inheritance with your elect, especially with the most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her spouse, with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs, and with all the saints on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help. May this sacrifice of our reconciliation, we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth. With your servant Leo, our Pope, Francis, our bishop, the order of bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own. Listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you. In your compassion, O merciful Father, gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world. To our departed brothers and sisters, and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good. Through him and with him and in him, O God, Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever.
SPEAKER_06Amen.
SPEAKER_01At the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am saying that.
SPEAKER_02Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_01Having been made partakers of eternal redemption, we pray, O Lord, that we who commemorate the Mother of your Son may glory in the fullness of your grace and experience its continued increase for our salvation through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Let us go forth, for the Mass has ended.
SPEAKER_07Thanks be to God.
SPEAKER_02Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass.
