From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.

SPEAKER_01

Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I'm Father Hank van Mijel. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from Christine Flerty from Canada. This Mass is offered for the members of the BJ Flerity family living and those who are no longer with us. We know that this television mass brings meaning to the lives of tens of thousands of the faithful across Canada and around the world, and they join with me in thanking Christine for the gift of this Mass. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you.

SPEAKER_04

And with your Spirit.

SPEAKER_01

And as we have placed ourselves before the Lord on this Tuesday, again recalling our own weakness, our own need for God's guidance. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart. Lord have mercy. You came to call sinners. Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. And let us pray. Grant us, we pray, O Lord, O God, the constant gladness of being devoted to you, for it is full and lasting happiness to serve with constancy the author of all that is good. True, O Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever.

SPEAKER_04

Amen.

SPEAKER_02

A reading from the first book of Kings. The word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, Go down to meet King Ahab of Israel, who rules in Samaria. He is now in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone to take possession. You shall say to him, Thus says the Lord, have you killed and also taken possession? You shall say to him, Thus says the Lord, in the place where dogs licked up the blood of Naboth, dogs will also lick up your blood. Ahab said to Elijah, Have you found me, O my enemy? He answered, I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of the Lord. I will bring disaster on you, I will consume you, and will cut off from Ahab every male bonder-free in Israel. And I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam, son of Nabot, and like the house of Basha, son of Ahisha, because you have provoked me to anger, and have caused Israel to sin. Also concerning Jezebel, the Lord said, The dog shall eat Jezebel within the bounds of Jezreel. Anyone belonging to Ahab who dies in the city, the dog shall eat, and any one of his who dies in the open country, the birds of the air shall eat. Indeed, there was no one like Ahab, who sold himself to do what was evil in the sight of the Lord, urged on by his wife Jezebel. He acted most abominably in going after idols, as the Amorites had done, whom the Lord drove out before the Israelites. When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes and sackcloth over his bare flesh. He fasted, lay in the sackcloth, and went about dejectedly. Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite. Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself before me, I will not bring the disaster in his days, but in his son's days I will bring the disaster on his house. The word of the Lord.

SPEAKER_06

According to your abundant mercy, blot out my transgressions, wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned, for I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you alone have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight. Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities. Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your deliverance. Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah. I give you a new commandment. Love one another as I have loved you. Hallelujah Hallelujah.

SPEAKER_01

The Lord be with you, and in your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Jesus said to his disciples, You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven, for he makes the sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect therefore as your Heavenly Father is perfect. The Gospel of the Lord. Such a simple gospel reading, and just love your neighbour as yourself and love everyone around you, and it's so easy to say, but then we get to the crux of our faith because it's not that simple, because there's plenty of people who really uh who really get under a skin, and often in our families, of course, spouses, children, grandchildren, and so on, and then to continue to love even in the face of not uh of uh less than a life-giving living. And so it is not easy, and of course it's also about setting boundaries. If I'm really been violated, that does not mean, and forgiveness by the way, is a process, it's not something that happens. But if I forgive someone, it does not mean that I don't have to set boundaries because I don't want to get hurt again, but it does not mean that I cannot love. And often it starts by feeling sorry for that person in the first place. I get in touch with their life, and but but uh injustice is everywhere. And in the first reading, again, we continue of yesterday uh King Ahab, who uh who's really uh pulled the fast one on Naboth uh for his uh vineyard, and of course, his beloved wife uh Jezebel, you would not want to marry her because she'll cause a lot of problems. But again, they're not listening to God, they're not listening to themselves, and uh Elijah has to come in and just tell him plain the truth. You will you will pay for this, and you will pay for it, and God will put it in place. And this is the one thing we also in our own life we can uh we can be sometimes trying to play ourselves God, and I will make sure that this person is gonna pay. But leave it up to God, that's the main thing. Can I leave it up to God and let the retribution come through God? God who sees and knows every thought and action we have. Saint Ignatius of Layola spends a fair bit of time in his uh spiritual exercises on this kind of stuff, and especially the examination of conscious. He spends a lot of time on it. And it is so important to become silent, to become quiet, and to be able to listen what is going on between our two ears or thoughts. What is happening in our thoughts? And Saint Ignatius will say there's thoughts can come from three different ways. Thoughts can be our own, thoughts can come from God, and thoughts can come from the evil one. And especially the one from the evil one, we really can uh have to discern. And it's a very the best example I can use is someone who's living in sin. I'm just saying someone who's really stuck in their addiction. And and so I'm just saying they're they're uh drinking their lives away and they have to drive, and the good angel will say, Hey, the good angel on this shoulder will say, Hey, you should have a conscience. This is not good for you. You know, stop drinking, you will pay for this. The evil one will say, Ah, who cares? Just keep drinking. Who cares? Nobody cares about you anyway. That is the false voice. And to be able to listen to those different voices within us, it is very important. And so often when I'm with people, uh that so that often I can put things in spiritual direction in a psychological perspective, but then I also can bring the spiritual dimension in it. And so, as say if someone is really struggling with pornography or whatever, I can say, Have you ever noticed that those thoughts just pop in your head out of the blue? And they often say, they often say, Yeah, wow, well, that might just be the evil one. It is very hard to distinguish, draw exact lines because the evil one plays on what is happening within us in our own psyche already, what what our desires are. Or if I'm if I'm struggling with anger issues, I'm angry about uh people around me, and the evil one will just keep pressing that button. See, see, this person did it again. See, you should be angry, the heck with him. And we have to listen to those voices, because otherwise we cannot laugh. And so St. Ignatius spends a lot of time on it. Then also, of course, our thoughts, from our thoughts, flow uh we start to mull on things, we start to think about things. So it's so important to stop the the undesirable thoughts very early on. If I get aware of an unwanted thought, could be sexual, could be whatever, ah, stop it. I don't want to listen to that. Let me refocus. But if I cannot refocus, then I start to dwell on it. And when I start to dwell on it, then it it slowly uh I start to fantasize, and eventually it might uh come to deeds and I might live it out. And this so often, even in our relationships, so many marriages are broken down, and so many marriages there's infidelity, and it all starts with the thoughts. Oh, I saw the neighbor. Wow, the neighbor looks so nice, and and the neighbor is so nice to me, and then the thoughts start, and it just grows, and next thing you know, uh I'm basically having an intimate relationship with the neighbor, and so it's so important, and then we move to the deeds, and and that's where all the problem starts, and so it's so important to be in touch with ourselves, to find that silence in our lives. And so many of us don't like silence, and actually, Manrisa Retreat Center is all about silence, to come here to be in silence and to learn to live through uh learn to listen to all those thoughts. What is going on in my mind, and to sort through those thoughts. Thoughts which are life-giving, thoughts which are not life-giving. And and when we can sort through that in the silence of our hearts, then we also can start to love our neighbor much better. And we can see how the devil tries to instill anger or resentment, and of course, the biggest tool of the devil is resentment, because if I'm resentful, then everything flows from it. Flows from it, and the person I'm resentful of does has no chance anymore. And it's the devil's playground, and so it's so important to listen to our hearts and to be children of God and to be people who love others. Amen. So let us bring our prayers before the Lord. We pray for all those in the Daily TV Mass Prayer Intention Book. We pray to the Lord.

SPEAKER_04

Lord, hear our prayer.

SPEAKER_01

During this month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, let us pray for healing and families, that Christ's mercy may renew our hearts and restore our relationships. We pray to the Lord.

SPEAKER_04

Lord, hear our prayers.

SPEAKER_01

With Pope Leo, we pray this month that sports be an instrument of peace, encounter, and dialogue among cultures and nations, and that they promote values such as respect, solidarity, and personal growth. We pray to the Lord. We pray for all in our noisy world who are overwhelmed with negative thoughts that they will discover God's love in the silence of their own hearts. We pray to the Lord. And for these prayers and the prayers in the silence of our own hearts, we lift them up to you, Lord.

SPEAKER_02

Amen.

SPEAKER_01

Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands. It will become for us the bread of life.

SPEAKER_05

Blessed be God forever.

SPEAKER_01

By the mystery of this water and wine, may we come to share in the divinity of Christ, who humbled himself to share in our humanity. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink.

SPEAKER_05

Blessed be God forever.

SPEAKER_01

Cleanse me of my sins. Thank you. Pray, my sisters and brothers, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.

SPEAKER_03

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy church.

SPEAKER_01

Grant, O Lord, we pray that what we offer in the sight of your majesty may obtain for us the grace of being devoted to you and gain us the price of everlasting happiness. Through Christ, O Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you.

SPEAKER_04

And with your spirit.

SPEAKER_01

Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, for just as through your beloved Son you created the human race, so also through him with great goodness you formed it anew. And so, in the right that all your created serve you, and all the redeemed praise you, and all your saints with one heart bless you.

SPEAKER_06

Therefore we too extol you with all the angels, as in joyful celebration we acclaim Holy Holy Lord God of hosts heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest Hosanna in the highest blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the highest Hosanna in the highest.

SPEAKER_01

You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy therefore these gifts we pray by sending down your spirit upon them like the dofall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving you thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. The mystery of faith.

SPEAKER_06

When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again.

SPEAKER_01

Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the challenge of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo or Pope, Francis or Bishop, the Order Bishops, the clergy, and the entire people you have called your own. Remember also our sisters and brothers who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy, welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all. We pray that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the blessed Joseph, our spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, O glory and honor is yours for ever and ever. Amen. And at the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, O Father, who art in heaven, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as this in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

SPEAKER_02

And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil.

SPEAKER_01

Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

SPEAKER_02

For the kingdom and the power and the glory are yours now and forever.

SPEAKER_01

Lord Jesus Christ, who said to the apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant our peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always and let us offer each other a sign of peace.

SPEAKER_06

You take away the sins of the world. Grant speech.

SPEAKER_01

Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord I not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be.

SPEAKER_03

Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.

SPEAKER_01

And let us pray. We have humbly partaken of the gifts of this sacred mystery, humbly imploring, O Lord, that what your Son commanded us to do in memory of him may bring us growth and charity through Christ, O Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your Spirit. May Almighty God bless you, Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Amen. Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.

SPEAKER_05

Blessed be to God.

SPEAKER_00

Our thanks to our donor for the gift of this mass.
