From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.

SPEAKER_02

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of the Father, the friendship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And with your spirit. Welcome to the celebration of this daily televised Mass. I'm Father Michael Coots. The televising of this Mass is made possible by a contribution from the estate of John Timothy Murphy. This Mass is being offered in memory of John and for his living and deceased family members, including his brother Willis Murphy. May his soul and the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen. As we begin this Eucharist, let us ask the God of mercy and compassion to forgive us our sins. You were sent to heal the contrite. Lord, have mercy. Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord, have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. Almighty ever living God, who govern all things both in heaven and on earth, mercifully hear the pleading of your people and bestow your peace on our times, through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.

Amen. A reading from the second book of Kings. When Athaliah, Ahajah's mother, saw that her son was dead, she set about to destroy all the royal family. But Jehoshaba, King Joram's daughter, Ahajah's sister, took Joash, son of Ahajah, and stole him away from among the king's children who were about to be killed. She put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Thus she hid him from Athaliah, so that he was not killed. He remained with her six years, hidden in the house of the Lord, while Athaliah reigned over the land. But in the seventh year Jehoida summoned the captains of the Kerites and of the guards, and had them come to him in the house of the Lord. He made a covenant with them, and put them under oath in the house of the Lord. Then he showed them the king's son. The captains did according to all that the priest Jehoidah commanded. Each brought his men who were to go off duty on the Sabbath with those who were to come on duty on the Sabbath, and came to the priest Jehoiada. The priest delivered to the captains the spears and shields that had been King David's, which were in the house of the Lord. The guard stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, from the south side of the house to the north side of the house, around the altar and the house, to guard the king on every side. Then he brought out the king's son, put the crown on him, and gave him the covenant. They proclaimed him king, and anointed him. They clapped their hands and shouted, Long live the king. When Athalia heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she went into the house of the Lord to the people. When she knocked, there was the king standing by the pillar, according to custom, with the captains and the trumpeters beside the king, and all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Athalia tore her clothes and cried, Treason, treason. Then the priest Jehoida commanded the captains who were set over the army, bring her out between the ranks, and kill with the sword anyone who follows her. For the priest said, Let her not be killed in the house of the Lord. So they laid hands on her. She went through the horse's entrance to the king's house, and there she was put to death. Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the king and people, that they should be the Lord's people, also between the king and the people. Then all the people of the land went to the house of Baal and tore it down. His altars and his images they broke in pieces, and they killed Matan, the priest of Baal, before the altars. So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet, after Athalia had been killed with the sword at the king's house. The word of the Lord.

One of the sons of your body I will sit on your throne. The Lord has chosen Zion for his dwelling. If your sons keep my covenant and my decrees that I shall teach them. Their sons also forevermore shall sit on your throne. The Lord has chosen Zion for his dwelling. For the Lord has chosen Zion. He has desired it for his habitation. This is my resting place for Havana. Here I will reside for I have desired it. Blessed are the poor in spirit. The kingdom of heaven is this Alleluia Hallelujah.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Jesus said to his disciples, Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consume, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. The eye is a lamp of the body. So if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness? The gospel of the Lord. And it would make a beautiful BBC saga just like Downtown Abbey. Here we have Queen Athaliah. Queen Athaliah, scholars tell us, was the daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, whom we know pretty well. They were in the northern kingdom, very close to the border of Lebanon at Mount Carmel, and Queen Jezebel had set up an altar to the false god Baal. And it was here that Ezekiel came and challenged these 450 priests of Baal. And when he found that he overcame them, he had them slaughtered, and then he had to flee because Queen Jezebel was the one who was going to try and kill him. Now we have the daughter, Queen Athaliah, and she seems to be cut from the same cloth as Queen Jezebel. Queen Athaliah was the queen regent. When her son Ahaziah had died, she took over the kingdom. First she became a queen, and then she did something which was very typical in those days. She put to death all Azariah's siblings, their cousins, and anyone who had a claim to the throne. However, she missed one, and one was the very sister of Ahaziah, who managed to hide one of the sons of Queen Atheliah, who would be the king inherent, and she hid him for so long. Now we wonder why exactly we hear all these stories in the scriptures today. What does it bring us right in the middle of the mass to have stories of intrigue, of murder, and then we realize this is not something that is very strange in our own times. You know, we have political parties, both conservative and liberal, and they seem to fight against one another. But in between all this, you realize they are fighting for the same thing, for the betterment of the people, for infrastructure, for education, for health, for all these things, but they go about it at a different level, and therefore they fight in parliament. But that's not the whole story. Behind each political group itself, you have infighting behind doors. There are assassinations of character, there are people who will bring out all the dirt that they can on their neighboring own political party in order that they can rise up. And they want to be president and prime minister and king and chancellor. They'll do anything to get there at the head. So the story of Queen Athaliah over here is not something that is new. It is something that happens even in our own days. But I'm still intrigued why the story of violence and murder and bloodshed is brought right in the middle of mass. And I asked liturgist, I so far I did not get a good answer. So here we have Queen Atheliah, who is ambitious and wants to be the queen, and then you know what happens in the end? She is killed outside the temple. She worked in the south of the kingdom in Judea, whereas her mother was in the northern kingdom of Israel. She was right at the palace, and she was right in Jerusalem where the temple was. She was queen. And in the gospel we have another person who is of royal blood, Jesus Christ, who is the total opposite to Queen Atheliah. He is a king whose kingdom is not of this world, as he would tell Pilate. He is a king that invites people, he does not use force, he does not use threats, he does not send armies out to annihilate all those who are in opposition to him. In fact, he reaches out to the people that are most unlikely, and he invites them to his kingdom, he invites them to his table. The beauty about this king is that he not only shows it by example, but also he teaches. And so we have Jesus saying, do not lay up treasures for yourselves where moth and rust can destroy. Today he wouldn't use moth and rust, he would use stocks and bonds and cryptocurrency. I remember one of my friends telling me the story, I don't know the origin. He says, a man came to a village and he said to the villagers, I need monkeys, and I'll give $10 for every monkey that you catch. So they went around and collected every monkey that they could in that village. The next day he raised the ante and he said, I'll give $20 for every monkey that you can catch. Well, there were none left. So they went to the neighboring villages to catch monkeys. Finally, he came on the third day and he said, I need still more monkeys, and I will give $50 for every monkey. But I have to go to the city because you all need cash, and I'll bring the cash in tomorrow here today. But I'll leave my assistant over here who has got the key to all the monkeys that are in a cage. So the assistant was devious and he said to them later on in the day when the master had gone, he says, You know what? I'll sell these monkeys to you for $35. And when he comes back, you can sell them to him for $50, and each one of you can make $15 apiece. They were all so greedy, they went and got all their savings, they went and borrowed, they put their houses up at collateral, and they bought all those monkeys. That night the assistant disappeared, and so did the boss. And they were left with a barrel full of monkeys and the poop that they had to clean up. Their greed had brought them to this stage. Jesus would have used this parable today instead of moth and rust. Now, Jesus is not telling us to be stupid. He needs us to be wise and to see security, to work and to save, but not to set our money on making more and more and more money like the villagers. We need to put food on the table, clothes on our children and our grandchildren, a roof over our head, and so it makes sense to do something and be secure. But when we have when we are greedy, all we lose is not only our dignity, our savings, but also our very soul. God bless you all. Would you join me now as we pray together? Together with Pope Leo, we pray that each one of us may find consolation in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. For this we pray to the Lord. Lord Jesus, by your victory you broke the power of evil and destroyed sin and death. Make us victorious over sin today. We pray to the Lord.

unknown

Lord, hear our prayer.

SPEAKER_02

For the Pope's intention in this month of June that sports can be an instrument of peace, encounter, and dialogue among cultures and nations, and they may promote values of respect, solidarity, and personal growth. We pray to the Lord. And for all those who are in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intention Book, we pray to the Lord.

SPEAKER_03

Lord, hear our prayer.

SPEAKER_02

Father, help us to seek the values that will bring us eternal joy in this changing world. In our desire for what you promise, make us one in mind and heart. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever.

SPEAKER_04

Amen.

SPEAKER_02

Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. For through your goodness we have this bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life.

SPEAKER_04

Blessed be God forever.

SPEAKER_02

Through the mystery of this wine and water. May we come to share in the divinity of Christ, too humble and share in humanity. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. For through your goodness we have this wine we offer you, fruit of the wine and work of human hands. It will become for us our spiritual drink.

SPEAKER_04

Blessed be God forever.

SPEAKER_02

Lord God, be pleased to accept this gift that we offer to you with humble and with contrite heart. Worship in my iniquities and cleanse me from my sins.

unknown

Thank you.

SPEAKER_02

Pray, my sisters, my brothers, that this our sacrifice be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father.

SPEAKER_05

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name. For our given to good of all his holy church.

SPEAKER_02

Grant us, O Lord, we pray, that we may participate worthily in these mysteries. For whenever the memorial of this sacrifice is celebrated, the work of our redemption is accomplished. We make this prayer through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere, to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, for just as through your beloved Son you created the human race, so also through him in your goodness you formed it anew. And so it is right that all creatures serve you, all the redeemed praise you, and all your saints with one heart bless you. And therefore we too extol you with all the angels, as in joyful celebration we acclaim.

SPEAKER_06

Holy, holy Lord God of host heaven and earth are full of your glory.

SPEAKER_02

You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy, therefore, these gifts we pray. By sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread and giving you thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.

SPEAKER_06

And drink this calm. We proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again.

SPEAKER_02

Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Francis, our bishop, all the clergy, and this entire people of God. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles, and with all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life and praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ. Through him with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever.

SPEAKER_06

Amen.

SPEAKER_02

At the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we now dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our day, that by the help of your mercy we may be free from sin and safe from all distress as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant a peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever.

SPEAKER_05

Amen.

SPEAKER_02

The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your superior. Let us share with one another a sign of this peace and friendship.

SPEAKER_06

You take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. Grant us peace.

SPEAKER_02

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those who are called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed. May the body and blood of Christ bring us and all our dear ones unto life everlasting.

SPEAKER_01

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.

SPEAKER_02

Let us pray. Pour out on us, O Lord, the spirit of your love, and in your kindness make those you have nourished by this one bread one in mind and heart through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. May Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Go in the peace of Christ to love and serve the Lord and one another.

SPEAKER_03

Thanks be to God.

SPEAKER_01

Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this month.
