Fr. Tomasz Skibinski
From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_00Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I am Father Tomasz Skibinsky. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from the estate of Rina Maria Vendramin. This Mass is offered in loving memory of Rina Maria and her husband Giuseppe. May their souls and the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. As we gather around the Lord's table, let us first of all ask him for pardon and strength, so that we may worldly celebrate these holy mysteries. I confess to Almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I ask, Blessed Mary of a Virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. Let us pray. Keep your family safe, O Lord, with unfailing care, that relying solely on the hope of heavenly grace, they may be defended always by your protection. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.
SPEAKER_01A reading from the second book of Kings. Sennacherib, the King of Assyria, sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying, Thus shall you speak to King Hezekiah of Judah. Do not let your God, on whom you rely, deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. See, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, destroying them utterly. Shall you be delivered? Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it. Then Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord and spread it before the Lord. And Hezekiah prayed before the Lord and said, O Lord, the God of Israel, who are enthroned above the cherubim, you are God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear. Open your eyes, O Lord, and see. Hear the words of Zenecharib, which he has sent to mock the living God. Truly, O Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations of and their lands, and have hurled their gods into the fire, though they were no gods but the work of human hands, wood and stone, and so they were destroyed. So now, O Lord our God, save us, I pray you, from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O Lord, are God alone. Then Isaiah, son of Amos, sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, I have heard your prayer to me about King Sennacherib of Assyria. This is the word that the Lord has spoken concerning him. She despises you, she scorns you, Virgin Daughter Zion. She tosses her head behind your back, daughter Jerusalem. For from Jerusalem a remnant shall go out, and from Mount Zion, a band of survivors. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. Therefore, thus says the Lord, concerning the king of Assyria, ye shall not come into the city, shoot an arrow there, come before it with a shield, or cast a siege ramp against it. By the way that he came, by the same he shall return. He shall not come into this city, says the Lord. For I will defend the city to save it for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David. That very night the angel of the Lord set out and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When morning dawned, they were all dead bodies. The king Sinacerib of Assyria left, went home, and lived at Nineveh. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_04Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised in the city of God. His holy mountain, beautiful in elevation, is the joy of all the earth. God has holds his city for Mount Zion in the farm of the city of the great king. Within its citadens, God has shown himself a short defense. God has pulled his forehead.
SPEAKER_00A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. In everything do to others as you would have them do to you, for this is the law and the prophets. Enter through the narrow gate, for the gate is wide, and the road is easy that leads to destruction. And there are many who take it. For the gate is narrow, and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it. The Gospel of the Lord. In those recent days, we've been hearing the history of the ancient Israel and so many different events, and so many names, and you know, all those things that were that were happening that seemed to be very remote and kind of far away from us. And today we reflect on the figure of King Senacerib, a man of immense power, ambition, and confidence in his own strength. He ruled over one of the greatest empires of the ancient world, commanding vast armies and conquering nations. His name inspired fear, his victory seemed unstoppable, and his achievements appeared to place him above all others. From a human perspective, Sennacherib represents success. He had what many strive for authority, recognition, influence, control. He fortified cities, expanded borders, and made Nineveh a symbol of imperial glory. Yet the scriptures invite us to look deeper, not at what he built, but in what he trusted. When Sennacherib came against Jerusalem, he did not merely challenge the city, he challenged faith itself. His messengers spoke words of arrogance, mocking not only the people but also their trust in God. He believed that just as he had overcome other nations, so too he would overcome Judah. In his mind there was no limit to his power. But this is where the turning point lies. The story reminds us that human strength, no matter how great, is never absolute. What seems invincible can falter. What appears permanent can vanish. The might of empires fades, but the truth of God endures. This is not only a lesson about a distant king. It is a mirror which is held up to each of us. We may not lead armies or build empires, but we are often tempted to rely entirely on ourselves, our abilities, our plans, our achievements. We are tempted to believe that we are in control, that we can secure our future by our own strength. There is in each of us the temptation to become, like Sennacherib, to replace trust in God with trust in oneself. And yet, God and life itself has a way of reminding us of our limits. Moments of uncertainty, failure, or loss reveal that we are not as self-sufficient as we imagined. These moments are not meant to defeat us, but to redirect us, to call us back to a deeper foundation. The message of this reflection is not condemnation, but invitation. It is an invitation to humility, not humiliation, but to stand in front of the truth, to recognize that our strength is real but not ultimate. That our achievements matter, but they do not define our worth. That our lives are secure not because we control everything, but because we are held by someone that is much greater than ourselves. It is an invitation to trust. Trust does not mean just passivity. It does not mean abandoning effort or responsibility. Rather, it means placing our efforts in the right order, working faithfully while knowing that the final outcome rests in God's hands. Finally, it is an invitation to hope. If even the greatest kings are subject to limits, then we are freed from the burden of trying to be limitless ourselves. We do not need to carry the weight of the world. We are allowed to be human, finite, dependent, and yet always deeply loved. The story of Sennacherib reminds us that pride builds walls, but humility opens doors. Pride isolates, but trusts, trust connects. Pride seeks control, but faith discovers peace. So today we can ask ourselves honestly, where do I place my trust? What am I building, or what am I building my life upon? Am I relying solely on my own strength or am I open to the presence and the power of God in my life? May this short reflection lead us not to fear our limitations, but to embrace them as a path to deeper faith. May we enter this narrow door, this narrow way that leads to life. May we choose humility over pride, trust over fear, and faith over self-sufficiency. And now with trust and confidence in our God, we turn to Him with our prayers. Let us pray first of all for the church, that she may be a sign of God's presence and God's power in this world. May it be a beacon of hope for many. We pray to the Lord. Let us pray also for the nations and for all those who hold power and authority, that they may not rely on their own strength, but on the power of God. We pray to the Lord. Let us also pray for all those who ask us to pray for them. Let us also pray for the sponsors, the donors of this mass, for their intentions, the repose of the soul of their souls, that the Lord may be merciful to them, may welcome them into their kingdom. We pray to the Lord. And for all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord. And during this time of this time, this month of the sacred heart of Jesus, let us pray for healing in families, that Christ's mercy may renew our hearts and restore our relationships. We pray to the Lord. Almighty Father, we ask that you welcome these prayers that we've expressed and all the intentions which we bring to this celebration, listen to them and fulfill them accord according to your holy will. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands. It will become for us the bread of life. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink. With humble spirit and contrite heart, may we be accepted by you, O Lord. May our sacrifice in your side this day be pleasing to you, Lord God. Lord wash up my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father. O Lord our God, who once established these created things to sustain us in our frailty, grant, we pray, that they may become for us now the sacrament of eternal life through Christ our Lord.
SPEAKER_02Amen.
SPEAKER_00The Lord be with you. And in your spirit. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere, to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God. For just as through your beloved Son you created the human race, so also through Him, with great goodness you formed it anew. And so it is right that all your creatures serve you, all the redeemed praise you, and all your saints with one heart bless you. Therefore we too extol you with all the angels, as in joyful celebration we acclaim.
SPEAKER_04Holy holy holy Lord God of heaven and love your glory.
SPEAKER_00And you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so that from the rising of the Sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name. Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you, by the same Spirit, graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration, that they may become the body and blood of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate these mysteries. For on the night he was betrayed, he himself took bread, and giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and giving you thanks, he said the blessing and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
SPEAKER_04Do this in memory of me the mystery of faith when we eat this bread and drink. This cup we proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again.
SPEAKER_00Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving passion of your Son, His wondrous resurrection and ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to His second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice. Look, we pray upon the oblation of your church and recognizing the sacrificial victim by whose death you will to reconcile us to yourself, grant that we, who are nourished by the body and blood of your Son and filled with His Holy Spirit, may become one body, one spirit in Christ. May He make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her spouse, with your blessed apostles and glorious martyrs, and with all the saints, on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help. May this sacrifice of our reconciliation we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim church on earth, with your servant Leo, our Pope, and Francis our bishop, the order of bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own. Listen graciously to the prayers of this family whom you have summoned before you. In your compassion, O merciful Father, gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world. To our departed brothers and sisters, and to all who are pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to enjoy forever the fullness of your glory through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good.
SPEAKER_05Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever. Amen.
SPEAKER_00At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, kingdom and the power and the glory of yours now and forever. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit. Let us offer each other the sign of peace.
SPEAKER_04You take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us.
SPEAKER_00Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word, and my soul shall be healed.
SPEAKER_03Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_00O God who have willed that we be partakers in the one bread and the one chalice, grant us, we pray, so to live that made one in Christ we may joyfully bear fruit for the salvation of the world through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you. May Almighty God bless you, the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Let us go in peace.
SPEAKER_03Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this month.
