Fr. Henk van Meijel, S.J.
From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_02Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I'm Father Hank van Meyle. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution of an anonymous donor from Apsley, Ontario. This Mass is offered for the repose of the soul of his brother Joe. May your soul and the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen. As we gather once again here at Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center, we continue our remembrance of the Canadian Martyrs in preparation of the 100th anniversary of the Martyr's Saturday. Today we honor St. Isaac Yokes, whose perseverance through suffering reminds us that the gospel is lived most deeply through faithful witness. In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_05And with your Spirit.
SPEAKER_02You came to call sinners. Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Amen. And let us pray. O God, who teach us that you abide in hearts that are just and true. Grant that we may so fashioned by your grace as to become a dwelling place, a dwelling pleasing to you. True, O Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.
SPEAKER_01A reading from the second book of Kings. Jehoiakin was eighteen years old when he began to reign. He reigned three months in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Nehushta, daughter of El Nathan of Jerusalem. He did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, just as his father had done. At that time the servants of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came up to Jerusalem, and the city was besieged. King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to the city while his servants were besieging it. King Jeukonin of Judah gave himself up to the king of Babylon, himself, his mother, his servants, his officers, and his palace officials. The king of Babylon took him prisoner in the eighth year of his reign. He carried off all the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king's house. He cut in pieces all the vessels of gold in the temple of the Lord, which King Solomon of Israel had made, and this, as the Lord had foretold. He carried away all Jerusalem, all the officials, all the warriors, ten thousand captives, all the artisans, and the smiths. No one remained, except the poorest people of the land. He carried away Jeohukin to Babylon, the king's mother, the king's wives, his officials, and the elite of the land. He took into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon. The king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon all the men of valor, seven thousand, the artisans and the smiths, one thousand, all of them strong and fit for war. The king of Babylon made Mayutana, Joachim's uncle, king in his place, and changed his name to Zedika. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_04Thanks be to God.
SPEAKER_07O God, the nations have come into your inheritance. They have defiled your holy temple. They have laid Jerusalem in ruins. They have given the bodies of your servants to the birds of the air for food. The flesh of your faithful to the wild animals of the earth. For the glory of your name, O Lord deliver. And there was no one to marry them. We have become a taunt to our neighbors, mocked and derided by those around us, for long, O Lord, will be angry forever. For the glory of your name, O Lord, do not remember against us the iniquities of our ancestors. Let your compassion come speedily to meet us, for we are brought very low. Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name. Deliver us and forgive our sins for your name's sake. For the glory of your name, O Lord deliver. And my father will love him, and we will come to them Alleluia Aleluya.
SPEAKER_02A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. On that day many will say to me, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and cast out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name? Then I will declare to them, I never knew you. Go away from me, you evildoers. Everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the flood came, and the wind blew and beat on the house, but it did not fall, because it was it had a foundation on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the flood came, and the winds blew and beat against the house, and it fell, and great was the fall. Now, when Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowd were astonished at his teachings, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as one of the scribes, the gospel of the Lord. Today's gospel reading is really the end of the Sermon of the Mount in Matthew. And the Sermon of the Mount, if we don't know anything else, if we kind of know the teachings of the Sermon of the Mount and we live them, we will live good lives. We will be good neighbors, we will be good people, and who will be signs for those around us. And so it is something to embrace. And in the first reading of two kings, we have King Nebuchadnezzar from Babylon who overruns Jerusalem. And it was very clear when the people went into exile that it was their own fault, because it was the retribution of God. They knew that they had not lived good lives, and that their house was not built on rock, as Jesus says in the gospel reading. Although Jerusalem is built on pretty solid rock, but figurally speaking, they it was not solid at all. The people they lived not good lives. And so this is this call to embrace the teachings of the faith and to accept our suffering. Today, as we in this week, as we celebrate the 100th years of the Martyr Shrine in Midland, Ontario, we today we celebrate St. Isaac Yokes. St. Isaac Yokes, who embraced the suffering which came to him. Actually, he even looked for it. He is actually on the universal calendar. He celebrated on October 19th in the US and in Canada on September the 26th. And one of the Canadian martyrs, now for our friends in the US, he's part of the North American martyrs, and we have this little thing going. But it's all the same. We venerate him and we ask for his intercession because he really endured. He was one of the early missionaries, Jesuit missionaries to New France, and he did a fair bit of work. He was actually in charge of building Saint Marie, was a kind of a village where the missionaries could come and rest, and before they went out again in a mission country. And on one of his ways back to in 1642, on his way back to Quebec City, now they would row in a canoe for about a month. It's not like in two days, a few hours, but they would, it was quite a travel, and he got captured by the Mohawk. And the Mohawk are part from the part of the Iroquois Federacy, and they were not always very nice to the captives. Just like in any other situation in war, even today, you don't want to be captured because it might not be good. But in those days it was absolutely cruel. They literally mutilated his fingers by people biting on it. He was beaten by clubs and so on. And he lived actually for and at one point another captive cut off his thumb. And so actually he could not officially allowed to celebrate Mass because he could not hold the Eucharist the way we're supposed to. And actually he was later on was given permission by Pope Urban VIII to celebrate Mass. When after he came back to Europe, he um he was for a year in captivity there, and actually he was uh traded with the Dutch. The Dutch were in New Amsterdam, today's New York, and eventually he made his way to the Netherlands and from there back to France. And there he was given dispensation, but he insisted on going back, insisted on going back. He knew how cruel it was. Just to give his life, to offer it up uh um to God, just like Jesus voluntarily gave up his life and got crucified. And he sought his own crucifixion. And on his return to North America, he was missioned as an ambassador with Jean de la Lande again to the Mohawk to kind of try to get some peace agreement with the French. And uh shortly after arriving, he was the tomahawk, uh he got killed by a tomahawk. And if you ever see a tomahawk, I when I see it, when I see a tomahawk, I get already a headache before I see it. It's one blow and you're done. And so uh he sure uh he was murdered and he knew when he went back that he probably got martyred, but he was not afraid, giving up his life, not to be afraid. And there was a lot of suspicion. The reason he was tomahawked right away, because the the native community were not happy with the European settlers, and one of the big reasons was the smallpox. The smallpox, there was an epidemic of smallpox, and the European missionaries, of course, did not and the European settlers did not know or understand that it came from them, that they had brought it from Europe and it decimated uh native populations. But but nevertheless, he gave his life for God, anything for God, and of course, few of us are really called to give our life in that way to God. But we can all be white martyrs. White martyrs accept our suffering in our own families where we are, and to be that light of Christ and to live that Sermon on the Mount to the fullest. Amen. Let us bring our prayers before the Lord. We pray for all those in the Daily TV Mass Prayer Intention Book. We pray to the Lord.
SPEAKER_04Lord Player.
SPEAKER_02During this month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, let us pray for healing and families, that Christ's mercy may renew our hearts and restore our relationships. We pray to the Lord. With Pope Leo, we pray this month that sports be an instrument of peace, encounter and dialogue among cultures and nations, and that they promote values such as respect, solidarity and personal growth. We pray to the Lord. We pray that, through the intercession of Saint Isaac Yokes, God will bring healing to all immigrants and migrants who live in difficult circumstances. We pray to the Lord. And for these prayers and the prayers in the silence of our own hearts, we lift them up to you, Lord. Amen. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you, the fruit of the earth and work of human hands. It will become for us the bread of life. By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you, the fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink.
SPEAKER_04Blessed God for everyone.
SPEAKER_02O Lord, and may our sacrifice in your sight as they be pleasing to you. Lord God, wash me, O Lord, for my iniquities, cleanse me of my sins. Thank you. Pray, my sisters and brothers, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty Father.
SPEAKER_04May the Lord accept a sacrifice in your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy church.
SPEAKER_02May this oblation, O Lord, we pray, cleanse and renew us, and may it become for those who do your will the source of eternal reward. Through Christ, O Lord.
SPEAKER_06Amen.
SPEAKER_02The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_04And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_02Lift up your hearts.
SPEAKER_04We lift them up to the Lord.
SPEAKER_02Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is truly right and just a duty and a salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, for just as through your beloved Son you created the human race, so also through him with great goodness you formed it anew. And so it is right that all your creatures serve you, all the redeemed praise you, and all your saints with one heart bless you. Therefore we too extol you, with all the angels as in joyful celebration we acclaim.
SPEAKER_07Holy, holy holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory Hana in the yest, hostana in the yest bless you comes in the name of the Lord. Hostana in the You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness.
SPEAKER_02Make holy therefore these gifts we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dof all, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving you thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you and eat of it, for this is my body, which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which was. Will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. The mystery of faith.
SPEAKER_07When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again.
SPEAKER_02Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo or Pope, Francis or Bishop, the other bishops, the clergy, and the entire people you have called your own. Remember also our sisters and brothers who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy, welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, your spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, O glory and honor is yours for ever and ever. Amen. And at the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, O Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day your daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_04For the kingdom, the power and we are yours, heaven forever.
SPEAKER_02Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant our peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirits. And let us offer each other a sign of peace.
SPEAKER_07You take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us you take away the sins of the world.
SPEAKER_02Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter on my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. And may the body of Christ keep us safe for eternal life.
SPEAKER_03Please join me now in this act of spiritual communion. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_02Having fed upon these heavenly delights, we pray, O Lord, that we may always long for that food by which we truly live. Through Christ, O Lord. The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. And may Almighty God bless you, Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Amen. Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.
SPEAKER_00Thanks be to God. Our thanks to our donor for the gift of this mass.
SPEAKER_05We have a research.
