From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_02Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass on this Solemnity of St. Peter and St. Paul. I'm Father Peter Turone. This Mass is offered in memory of Michael McManus, the founding executive director of the Daily TV Mass. The McManus family is grateful and honored that the NCBC members remembers Michael in this way. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_05Amen.
SPEAKER_02Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. I confess to Almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do. Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I ask Blessed Mary of a Virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace to people of goodwill. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory. Lord God, Heavenly King, O God, Almighty Father, Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son. Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us. You take away the sins of the world. Receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father. Have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One. You alone are the Lord. You alone are the Most High Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Let us pray. O God, who on the solemnity of the Apostles Peter and Paul, give us the noble and holy joy of this day. Grant we pray that your church may in all things follow the teaching of those whom she received the beginnings of right religion. For our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God forever and ever.
unknownAmen.
SPEAKER_00A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. In those days, King Herod laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. He had James, the brother of John, killed with the sword. After he saw that it pleased some of the people, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the festival of unleavened bread. When he had seized him, he put him in prison and handed him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover. While Peter was kept in prison, the church prayed fervently to God for him. The very night before Herod was going to bring him out. Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping between two soldiers while guards in front of the door were keeping watch over the prison. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him, saying, Get up quickly. And the chains fell off his wrists. The angel said to him, Fasten your belt and put on your sandals. He did so. Then he said to him, Wrap your cloak around you and follow me. Peter went out and followed him. He did not realize that what was happening with the angel's help was real. He thought he was seeing a vision. After they had passed the first and second guard, they came before the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went outside and walked along a lane, when suddenly the angel left him. Then Peter came to himself and said, Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hands of Herod and from all that the people were expecting.
SPEAKER_06His prayer shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its post in the Lord. Let the humble hand be clad. The Lord set me free from all my fears. Oh magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt his name together. I sought the Lord and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
SPEAKER_03I have kept the faith. From now on, there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. The Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory for ever and ever. Amen. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_02When Jesus came into the district of Sisaria Philippi, he asked his disciples, Who do people say that the Son of Man is? And they said, Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah, or one of the prophets. He said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered, You were the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered him, Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah, for flesh and blood is not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. The gospel of the Lord. But who do you say that I am? My brothers and sisters, today we celebrate this wonderful solemnity of the great saints Peter and Paul. We know in the Gospel every word is there for a reason. Every single word is his word, inspired by God, to communicate an important truth. Everything Jesus says, everything he does, every action, what he doesn't do in certain situations, and also the places where he speaks, they're of vast importance. And when we see this in Siseria Philippi, so Jesus comes to this particular place. Now the history behind that is quite remarkable. It has a very bad history. So what you find is that it is a place of total depravity and spiritual darkness. So the Lord, he who is God, light from light, God from light, the way, the truth, and the life, he takes them to the place on earth in the Jewish mind that is considered to be the gate of hell. It's the worst possible place. So the Lord is there, and that's why he says what he says. So he's bringing them to the worst possible place, what we call the gate of hell, and he says, there the most remarkable things. So this is where there was child sacrifice, there was all sorts of terrible things that were taking place, and they were worshiping demons rather than the true God. So Jesus brings them there and he says, Who do people say that the Son of Man is? So Jesus begins by asking them, right, to tell him what the others think. So he's standing there, and then they start to say, Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, others still Jeremiah, one of the prophets. So Jesus is eliciting the response from them, but he has something more important that he's going to ask them thereafter. So after the opinion of the people has been revealed, then he says, But who do you say that I am? So this is directly uh this is directed towards the apostles. And Simon Peter, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, right, is the first to respond. And he says, You are the Messiah, the Mashiach, the Son of the Living God. So he answers correctly. And it's the Holy Spirit. And Jesus says, Blessed are you, flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my father in heaven. So it's the Father, is the one who reveals this. And Peter is the instrument to be able to proclaim this remarkable truth. So you hear again, Jesus is revealing. So in this place, Sisariah Philippi, where they were worshiping uh mere mortals, right, and doing terrible things there, the center of darkness, the Lord comes and he says, No, he goes, He says, This is who he is. He is the one to be worshipped. He is God Himself. And then he continues and he reveals to Simon Peter what his mission is. He's going to be the rock on which Jesus will build his church. So here we have again this the mission that will be given to the first pope of many. So he doesn't receive the mission. He's told what he's going to do, but then the Lord gives him, he begins his ministry once after he's betrayed him and he's on the beach, and the Lord again gives him an opportunity to begin again. So after having denied the Lord three times, he has three times to affirm his faith. So we can see the beautiful uh gift that the Lord has given to this very fragile man. So this great mission. And we know that it isn't through flesh and blood, Peter's flesh and blood, that's going to allow him to persevere in his vocation, first as disciple, then as apostle, right, and the and to be the first pope. But more than that. So all of this comes from God, from the Holy Spirit. And Saint Paul has the same experience. So Saint Paul, he knows how weak he is. Saint Paul knows, right, he's fragile. He knows that he needs to depend on the mercy of God. So through his experience of conversion and throughout his life, he becomes progressively more humble and he realizes that he has to work and he has to work hard, use all of the gifts that God has given him, but at the same time, he has to rely entirely on the Holy Spirit. So, and you see God and man working together. So God working together for his purposes. And we are so blessed to have these two great men who love God and are so such an important part of the church who leave us this great testimony. So Jesus today stands before our country, our countries. He stands before the West and He asks us, he says, Who do people say that the Son of Man is? Who do people say in Western culture, Western society, that Jesus is? We no longer live in a Christian country, in a Christian society. We are definitely post-Christian. Just look at the laws and the different things that are taking place. So people have all sorts of opinions. Oh, Jesus was a good man. Jesus was a teacher. But if he claimed to be God, and he's and you don't believe that, well then he obviously either he's telling the truth or he's lying. And we obviously know that he's telling the truth, that he's God in the flesh. So before this, society is given its answer. But what matters for us, for our salvation, and for that of others, is how we respond. And Jesus asks us, Who do you say that I am? I hope and pray that we can all say, You are the Christ, you are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. You are the way, the truth, and the life, and no one can come to the Father but through you. And not only will we say with our lips, but also by the example of our lives. Let us now profess our faith. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into heaven. On the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. With all our heart and mind, let us pray to the Lord. Let us lay a request before Him, saying, Lord, hear our prayer. Lord, hear our prayer. For the Holy Catholic Church, for Leo XIV, our Pope, and for all the bishops and priests and deacon and all religious, that they would seek holiness. We pray to the Lord. For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord. During this month of the sacred heart of Jesus, let us pray for healing in families, that Christ's mercy may renew our hearts and restore our relationships. We pray to the Lord.
unknownLord give our prayer.
SPEAKER_02For an end to the violence perpetrated by harsh words, deadly weapons, or cold indifference. May our homes, our nation, and our countries all around the world become havens of peace. We pray to the Lord.
unknownLord give our prayer.
SPEAKER_02May the example of St. Peter and St. Paul of laying down one's life for the Lord and for our neighbor inspire us to do the same. We pray to the Lord. God of light, to live in your house is the desire of all your children. Hear our prayers and help us in all our needs through Christ our Lord. The fruit of the earth and the work of human hands will become for us the bread of life. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine will for you. The fruit of the vine, the work of human hands, you'll become our spiritual drink.
SPEAKER_01Worship, Lord of my inequities, cleanse me from all my sins.
SPEAKER_02Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the Almighty Father. May the prayer of the apostles, O Lord, accompany the sacrificial gift that we present to your name for consecration, and may their intercession make us devoted to you in celebration of the sacrifice through Christ our Lord.
SPEAKER_05Amen.
SPEAKER_02The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just it is truly right and just. Our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks. Lord, Holy Father, Almighty and Eternal God, for by your providence the blessed apostles Peter and Paul bring us joy. Peter, foremost in confessing the faith, Paul, its outstanding preacher, Peter who established the early church from the remnant of Israel. Paul, master and teacher of the Gentiles that you call. And so each in a different way gather together, the one family of Christ, and revere together throughout the world. They share one martyr's crown. And therefore, with all the angels and saints, we praise you, as without end we acclaim.
SPEAKER_06Holy holy holy god of hell and full of your comedy comes in the name of the Lord.
SPEAKER_02You are indeed holy, O Lord, the fountain of all holiness. Make holy, therefore, these gifts we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewful, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it. For this is my body, which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it. For this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence administered to you. Humbly we pray the partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, and Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with blessed Joseph, our spouse, with the blessed apostles, with Saints Peter and Paul, and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him. O God, Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours for ever and ever. At the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all the stress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, Peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of our church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit. Let us offer each other the sign of peace.
SPEAKER_06You take away the sins of the heart. Have mercy on us. Have mercy on us of God you take away the sins of the world.
SPEAKER_02Behold the Lamb of God. Behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord you shall be able to do that.
SPEAKER_04My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_02Let us pray. Grant us, O Lord, who have been renewed by the sacrament, so to live in the church, that persevering in the breaking of the bread and in the teaching of the apostles, we may be of one heart and one soul, made steadfast in your love through Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you. May Almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Go in peace.
SPEAKER_04Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this man.
