Msgr. Robert Nusca
From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_00Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I'm Monsignor Robert Nusca. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contributions from two donors. The first are Paul and Anne Burkholder from Mobile, Alabama, in loving memory, and for the soul of their son Chris, who would have celebrated his 57th birthday today and passed away on July 15th, and in Thanksgiving for blessings received. The second are Mary and Bill Van Bordonk from Sault Ste. Marie in celebration of their 70th wedding anniversary today. They would like to thank God for blessing them with six children, 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Brothers and sisters, let us now acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate these sacred mysteries. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart, Lord have mercy. You came to call sinners, Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us, Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
unknownAmen.
SPEAKER_00Let us pray. O God who consecrated the abundant first fruits of the Roman Church by the blood of the martyrs, grant we pray that with firm courage we may together draw strength from so great a struggle and ever rejoice at the triumph of faithful love. To our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever.
SPEAKER_01Amen. A reading from the book of the prophet Amos. Hear this word that the Lord has spoken against you, O people of Israel, against the whole family that I brought brought up out of the land of Egypt? You only have I known of all the families of the earth. Therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities. Do two walk together unless they have made an appointment? Does a lion roar in the forest when it has no prey? Does a young lion cry out from its den, if it has caught nothing? Does a bird fall into a snare on the earth when there is no trap for it? Does a snare spring up from the ground when it has taken nothing? Is a trumpet blown in a city and the people are not afraid? Does disaster befall a city unless the Lord has done it? Surely the Lord God does nothing without revealing his secret to his servants, the prophets. The lion has roared. Who will not fear? The Lord God has spoken. But who can prophesy? I overthrew you, I overthrew some of you, as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a brand snatched from the fire. Yet you did not return to me, says the Lord. Therefore, thus I will do to you, O Israel, because I will do this to you. Prepare to meet your God, O Israel. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_05For you are not a god who delights in wickedness. Evil will not sojourn with you. The boss for will not stand before your life. Lead me in your chas You hate all the auto! You destroy those big class The Lord of the bloodthirsty and deceitful. Lead me in your chaste la time through the abundance of your steadfast love into your house. I will bow down toward your holiday temple in love. Lead me in your chasto. I hope in the Lord. I trust in his word.
SPEAKER_00Jesus got into a boat, and his disciples followed him. A windstorm arose on the sea, so great that the boat was being swamped by the waves, but he was asleep. And they went and woke him up, saying, Lord, save us, we are perishing. And Jesus said to them, Why are you afraid, you of little faith? Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a dead calm. The disciples were amazed, saying, What sort of man is this that even the winds and the sea obey him? The Gospel of the Lord. Today's gospel speaks to us of a God who, far from abandoning us in the midst of our difficulties, is really present to us, especially during life's trials. God is present to us in the great storms of life, both the personal and collective storms. Having performed a number of miracles and having seen large crowds around him, Jesus now orders his disciples to cross over to the other side of the lake, the Sea of Galilee. And surely the disciples must have been confident in the fact that the Son of God was with them in the boat as they embarked. But they must have been quite surprised and even confused when the waters rose and the waves began to threaten, and they saw that Jesus was fast asleep. We can only imagine how confusion gave way to fear, fear gave way to desperation, till finally the terrified disciples awaken our Lord, who immediately arises, rebukes the wind and the sea, and all is calm once more. Our Lord is calling us to cross over with him to the other side. While Matthew is talking about the journey to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, we should always keep in mind our own ultimate destination, our journey, which is none other than the journey toward everlasting life. As our gospel today shows us, things can go wrong, even when Jesus is in the boat, so to speak. There are times when it may seem to us that he is asleep. So how are we to interpret this? Is there as a God who remains asleep to the needs of his people? Is God indifferent to the sufferings of the innocent? Or when we see our Lord asleep in the boat, should we see that in rather as rather an invitation to a simple and perfect trust in God? And herein lies the question of faith that each of us has to answer for ourselves on the journey of faith. For Jesus calls each one of us and calls us by name to be his disciple in our modern world, to cross over with him to the other side, from this world to the next, from the world of suffering to the world of consolation and blessedness to everlasting life. Our journey begins when? In baptism, where we cross over from original sin to becoming God's children. Crossing over to the other side for us then involves moving from doubt to faith, from fear to calm, from brokenness to wholeness, from mortality to immortality. And if the journey seems difficult, Jesus teaches us that the reward is so great. In fairness to those who regard God as being indifferent, our faith certainly doesn't change the basic facts of human existence, that people suffer, even the innocent, that disasters may befall us, and the fact that death eventually arrives for all of us. But our faith is capable of transforming the meaning of everything, the meaning of life, the meaning of suffering, the meaning of the storms of time. In fact, it's precisely when we call out to Jesus that he restores peace and tranquility. And the saints and martyrs of the early church, whom we remember today, remain for us then it's inspiring examples of the boldness and confidence that they had in the face of every difficulty, every suffering, every danger, no matter what situation they faced. So it is in his letter to the Philippians, Saint Paul writes that for me to live is Christ, to die is gain. For Paul Jesus was always with him, so to speak, in the boat. Amid whatever harsh conditions, whatever opposition he faced, shipwrecks, imprisonments, the treachery of those who opposed him and betrayed him. Pope Benedict XVI wrote in his encyclical Deus Caritases that even in their bewilderment and their inability to understand the world around them, Christians continue to believe in the basic goodness and loving kindness of God. They remain unshakably certain that God is our Father and that God loves us, even when his silence remains incomprehensible. What's important for us to see and how it is that amid the storms of life, while they have the power to overwhelm us, they also have the potential to carry us forward through the power of prayer and God's grace. Indeed, the writings of the church fathers reflect on the image of the boat as a symbol of the church. St. Augustine and others expressed the view that in the face of whatever difficulty, Christ is always with us in the boat. According to St. Peter Chrysologus, because Jesus is with us in the church, he's always ready to calm the waves of the world. He leads those who believe in him through safe sailing to the heavenly homeland. Christ does not need the vessel, the church, but the vessel needs Christ. Without the heavenly helmsman, the vessel of the church is unable to sail over the sea of the world and arrive at the heavenly harbor. Here also Saint Cyprian, bishop and prominent early martyr, adds that Jesus is not only with us in the boat, Jesus is with us in our hearts, struggling with us, struggling within us through the power of the Holy Spirit. He's ready to calm the storms of time for all who awaken him and remain awake to his presence, to the life of faith. Today the church, that remembers also again the first martyrs of the Holy Roman Church, the Christians of Rome who died for their faith during the persecution of the Emperor Nero in the year 64. History shows us that Christians were heavily persecuted in the fourth century. The early martyrs refused to worship the emperors as living gods, and they remained faithful to the belief that Jesus Christ was their Lord and their God. Some years ago, the saint Pope John Paul II observed that while the church of the first millennium was very much a church born of the blood of martyrs, at the end of the second millennium the church has once again become a church of martyrs, as believers continue to be persecuted in different parts of the world today. In our own time, according to one recent report, some 388 million Christians, or approximately one in seven globally, are affected by persecution, as we see in places like Nigeria, North Korea, and other parts of the world. The same time, without speaking of a war overt persecution in the developed West, the opposition to Christian values has now become pervasive. In his address to the members of the diplomatic corps in January of this year, Pope Leo XIV spoke of a subtle form of religious discrimination against Christians, which is spreading even in countries where they are the majority, such as in Europe or the Americas. There they're sometimes restricted in their ability to proclaim the truths of the gospel for political or ideological reasons. He goes on to add that it is painful to see how, especially in the West, the space for genuine freedom of expression is rapidly shrinking. At the same time, a new Orwellian-style language is developing, which in an attempt to be increasingly inclusive, ends up excluding those who do not conform to the ideologies that are fueling it. So as we continue to celebrate this Mass, let us pray for the intercession of the first martyrs of the church to obtain for us the grace to always be faithful, to be brave witnesses to the values of the gospel, in the face of whatever opposition in these challenging times in which we live. And let us pray that together with Jesus Christ, we may always do our own part to calm the storms of time. For amid the great storms, amid the great struggles of this passing life, we too are called to extend to others the light, the love, the serenity, and the peace of Christ Himself. Let us now make our prayers and petitions to God in heaven, asking Him to hear and to answer the prayers that we make now in Jesus' name. Let us pray for the universal church and for peace among nations, we pray to the Lord.
SPEAKER_03Lord Jacob.
SPEAKER_00For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord.
unknownLord Jacob.
SPEAKER_00During this month of the sacred heart of Jesus, let us pray for healing and families that Christ's mercy may renew our hearts and restore our relationships. We pray to the Lord. And for those intentions we remember now in the silence of our own hearts. For all of these intentions we pray to the Lord. Heavenly Father, you know the needs of your people in this passing life. We ask you to hear the prayers we've made and those that remain deep within our hearts, for we may make them all through Christ our Lord. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we receive the bread we offer you, the fruit of the earth, and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. When we come to share in divinity of Christ, who humble himself to share in our humanity. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for with your goodness we receive the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands will become our spiritual drink. Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty Father. Receive, Holy Father, the offerings that we bring in commemoration of the holy martyrs, and grant that we, your servants, may be found steadfast and confessing your name. We ask this to Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. And on the feeble bestow strength to bear you witness to Christ our Lord. Now with the powers of heaven we worship you constantly on earth and before your majesty without end we acclaim. Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dew fall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion, he took bread, and giving thanks broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. The mystery of faith. Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy. Welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with Blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles, with the martyrs of the early Roman Church, and all the saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever. At the Savior's command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation.
SPEAKER_03But deliver us from evil.
SPEAKER_00Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, Peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. The peace of the Lord be with you always. Let us extend to those around us a sign of the peace of Christ.
SPEAKER_05Grant peace.
SPEAKER_02Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_00O God, who in your holy martyrs have wonderfully made known the mystery of the cross, graciously grant that drawing strength from this sacrifice, we may cling faithfully to Christ and labor in the church for the salvation of all through Christ our Lord. The Lord be with you. May Almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Go forth, the Mass is ended.
SPEAKER_02Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass.
SPEAKER_00Far beyond images of the end of the world, St. John offers us a powerful portrait of Jesus Christ, the Alpha and the Omega, and the Lamb who was clean and yet lives.
