Bishop Gerard Bergie
From the St. Ignatius Chapel at the Manresa Jesuit Spiritual Renewal Center in Pickering, Ontario. The National Catholic Broadcasting Council presents the Daily TV Mass.
SPEAKER_03Welcome to the celebration of the Daily TV Mass. I am Bishop Gerard Birgy. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contributions from three donors. The first is Kathy from North York, Ontario, and Thanksgiving for family, and in memory of her deceased family members. The second are John and Rita from Durham, Ontario, for those who are sick and for their families, for the homeless around the world, and for the souls in purgatory. The third is Lucille Barclay from Nanus Bay, British Columbia. In loving memory of her husband Dwayne Barclay, their parents, Elizabeth and Norbert, and Charlie and Sonia and her brother Al. Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass. On this day, in 1867, the British North America Act united the original provinces into the country that we now call Canada. Since July 1st, 1868, Canadians from coast to coast to coast have marked this day with gratitude and celebration. As we give thanks for the gift of our nation, we also extend heartfelt thanks to you, our Canadian Daily TV Mass community, for your faithful support and for this ministry for 28 years. Following today's Mass, we invite you to remain with us for the singing of our national anthem, O Canada. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you.
SPEAKER_08And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_03My dear brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. You are sent to heal the contrite of heart, Lord have mercy.
SPEAKER_08Lord have mercy.
SPEAKER_03You came to call sinners, Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us, Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
SPEAKER_08Amen.
SPEAKER_03Let us pray. Eternal God, whose reign extends from sea to sea, and whose care endures throughout the ages, hear our prayers for our country. Grant wisdom to those who govern it, and respect for human life and dignity to every citizen, so that justice may flourish and all peoples live in unity and peace. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever and ever. Amen.
SPEAKER_00A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. Thus says the Lord, maintain justice and do what is right, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed. And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord, and to be his servants, all who keep the Sabbath and do not profane it, and hold fast my covenant. These I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar, for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. The word of the Lord.
SPEAKER_05My soul longs, indeed it faints for the courts of the Lord. My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord mighty God. Even the sparrow finds a home and the swallow a nest for herself where she may lay her young at your altars, O Lord of hosts, my king and my God. How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord mighty God For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than live in the tents of wickedness. How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord mighty God Blessed are the poor in spirit, the kingdom of heaven is theirs. Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah.
SPEAKER_08The Lord be with you, and with your spirit.
SPEAKER_03A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you, and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven. The gospel of the Lord. That it will be a light for other nations and a place of justice and peace. In our gospel for this Mass, Jesus focuses our attention on the kingdom of God rather than on any particular nation. We see this in the Beatitudes. The kingdom of God is not a geographical place. It is found in Christ Himself, as Pope Benedict XVI noted, that the kingdom is fundamentally a person, Jesus, who brings God's presence to the world. It is found within the human heart. The kingdom begins with the human heart inwardly and grows when individuals surrender to God's will. They turn outward. It is found in the church. The church is the seed and beginning of the kingdom of God on earth. It is the kingdom of God present in mystery, a mixed reality of weed and weeds that will only be perfectly realized at the end of time. It is found in the world, the community. The kingdom is present in the world through acts of charity, justice, and in the celebration of the sacraments. The kingdom of God is in our very midst. And finally, it is found in heaven, the final perfect expression and fulfillment of the kingdom of God, when we will be with God for all eternity. There is also an aspect of already and not yet, as we acknowledge that the kingdom of God has arrived in Jesus. However, there is still a coming in its fullness and in its perfection when Jesus comes again in his glory at the end of time. Our gospel, the Beatitudes, highlights what we would call kingdom values, what members or citizens of the kingdom of God are called to embrace and to live on a daily basis. They signify a blessed or a joyful state which is found in spiritual humility, righteousness, and mercy rather than worldly success. They represent a new way of living that centers on being more like Christ by providing comfort and hope to those who are poor in spirit, meek, and persecuted. The Beatitudes challenge worldly views by highlighting humility, mercy, and the mystery of redemptive suffering. Saint Augustine, great saint of the church, one of the church fathers, established a community, and as we know, our holy father Pope Leo is a member of that Augustinian order. He wrote the City of God over a 13-year period starting in the year 412 A.D. It was a response to the deep shock of the invasion and sacking of Rome by the Visigoths in the year 410. Many Romans saw it as a punishment for abandoning traditional Roman rites and the Roman pagan religion in favor of Christianity. In response, Augustine wrote City of God, where he argued that Christianity is not responsible for the sack of Rome, but on the contrary, it is responsible for the success of Rome, bringing the best out of all of its inhabitants. Augustine talks about the earthly city which is driven by self-love, pride, and a quest for power. There is often a conflict and a lack of true peace. He contrasts this with the heavenly city, the city of God, which is motivated by love, love of God, and love of others. They follow the Beatitudes and consider themselves to be pilgrims on a journey to God. These are the citizens of the city of God. Today we celebrate the earthly city of Canada as dual citizens, the earthly city and the city of God. We must live in both cities. This creates a tension for us as we live in a world that is sinful and focused on the secular, and yet we are called to holiness and to heavenly realities. We are called to be in the world and yet not of the world, and this can be challenging. Our calling as baptized Catholics is to be like yeast, salt, and light in the world, to help citizens of the earthly city to reflect the love of God, and we transform rather than condemn. We do this by living the Beatitudes each day. God's kingdom encompasses everything, even the two cities of Saint Augustine. Canada is part of God's kingdom. We pray for our nation that it will not turn away from its Christian roots, but will remain united in Christ. We pray that our leaders will heed the words of the first reading from the Lord to the prophet Isaiah, maintain justice, and do what is right. Today we pray for our Canada, we pray for our leaders, and we pray that through the grace of God, Canada will continue for many years to come to be glorious and free. May God bless you. Gathered as one to celebrate the goods that we have received from our God, let us now ask him to accept our petitions and to guide our prayers. Our response is, Lord, hear our prayer.
unknownLord, hear our prayer.
SPEAKER_03For Pope Leo, our bishops and priests, may Christ bless them with spiritual gifts and graces, and that they as shepherds may guide the people of God in truth, charity, and peace, we pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer. For our public authorities and for all who serve Canada, may God grant them wisdom and integrity so that laws and decisions may promote the common good and defend human dignity, we pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer. For all citizens of Canada that called for many peoples to become one nation, we may remain instruments of God's peace, placing our trust in Him and seeking His will in our choices that we make each day, we pray to the Lord.
SPEAKER_08Lord, hear our prayer.
SPEAKER_03For all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intention Book, we pray to the Lord. Lord, hear our prayer. For all of us as a community of prayer that we may give thanks for grandparents and elders like Saints Joachim and Ann, who nurture faith and family across generations with quiet strength, we pray to the Lord.
unknownLord, hear our prayer.
SPEAKER_03Merciful Father, receive these prayers we offer in faith. Grant what we ask for, the needs of our church and country, and lead us to peace through Jesus Christ our Lord. Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation, for through your goodness we receive the bread we offer you, fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for your goodness we receive the wine we offer you, fruit of the vine and work of human hands, and will become our spiritual drink.
SPEAKER_02Lord, wash away my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
SPEAKER_03Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the Almighty Father.
SPEAKER_07Praise the glory of his name for good and the good of all his holy church.
SPEAKER_03As we present our offerings in your sight, O Lord, send down your blessings upon this land and its peoples, that our voices may always sound your praise through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Lord be with you.
SPEAKER_08And with your spirit.
SPEAKER_03Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just truly right and just our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, and Eternal God. Through your word and your spirit, you called all things into being, that your love might be reflected in the vastness of the universe, in the bounty of land and sea, and in the diversity of peoples who bear your image. Yet your gifts of nature did not exhaust your goodness, for the fullness of your love was only revealed when you sent your only begotten Son for our salvation, and poured out your spirit to gather us into one as your own. Therefore, with the great company of angels and saints, we sing the hymn of your praise as without end we acclaim.
SPEAKER_05Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
SPEAKER_03You are indeed holy, O Lord, the font of all holiness. Make holy, therefore, these gifts we pray, by sending down your spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his passion. He took bread and giving thanks broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you, and eat of it, for this is my body which will be given up for you. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying, Take this all of you and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.
SPEAKER_05When we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again.
SPEAKER_03Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his death and resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the bread of life and the chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that, partaking of the body and blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. Remember, Lord, your church spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Leo, our Pope, Francis, our bishop, and all the clergy. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection. May all who have died in your mercy welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with blessed Joseph, her spouse, with the blessed apostles and all the saints. What pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be co-heirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him and with him and in him, O God, Almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours forever and ever. At the Savior's command, informed by divine teaching, we dare to say, Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil. Graciously grant peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ, for the kingdom. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your apostles, Peace I leave you, my peace I give you. Look not on our sins, but on the faith of your church, and graciously grant her peace and unity, in accordance with your will, who live and reign forever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always.
SPEAKER_02And with your Spirit.
SPEAKER_03Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.
SPEAKER_04My Jesus, I believe that you are present in this holy sacrament of the altar. I love you above all things, and I passionately desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come spiritually into my soul, so that I may unite myself wholly to you now and forever. Amen.
SPEAKER_03The Lord be with you. May Almighty God bless you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Go forth, the Mass has ended.
SPEAKER_02Our thanks to our donors for the gift of this Mass.
SPEAKER_06Our home native life true patriot love. In all separately l'épice, il se porte la croix. Canada, we stand on God for the Canada, we stand on God for thee.
SPEAKER_01This year we're celebrating a century, and so we'd like to invite all Canadians, all listeners, to come to the Martyrs Shrine this year on pilgrimage and visit us. See our website, martyrs shrine.com.
