Good day, everyone, and welcome. My name is Monsignor Sam Bianco. The Sunday Mass is the twentieth Sunday of Ordinary Time. The televising of this Mass is made possible by the contribution from Anne Jameson from Cambridge, Ontario. This Mass is offered in memory of Irene and Gerald Devlin with heartfelt gratitude from their family for their enduring example of love and faith. Our thanks to Anne for making it possible for tens of thousands of the faithful across Canada and indeed around the world to celebrate and share in this celebration. In order then to celebrate in a proper manner, we pause a moment and seek the Lord's mercy and forgiveness for our sins. You were sent to heal the contrite of heart. Lord have mercy. You came to call sinners. Christ have mercy. You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us. Lord have mercy. May Almighty God have mercy on all of us. Forgive us our sins and bring us all to everlasting life. Glory to God in the highest. And on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you. We give you thanks for your great glory. Lord God, Heavenly King, O God Almighty Father, Lord Jesus Christ, only begotten Son. Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world. Have mercy on us. You take away the sins of the world. Receive our prayer. You are seated at the right hand of the Father. Have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One. You alone are the Lord. A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Romans, brothers and sisters, now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I glorify my ministry in order to make my own flesh and blood jealous, and thus save some of them. For if their rejection is reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. Just as you were once disobedient to God, but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, so they have now been disobedient in order that, by the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. For God has imprisoned all in disobedience, so that he may be merciful to all. The word of the Lord.

A Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, Have mercy on me, Lord, son of David, my daughter is tormented by a demon. But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us. He answered, I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. But the woman came and knelt before him, saying, Lord, help me. He answered, It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs. She said, Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table. Then Jesus answered her, Woman, great is your faith. Let it be done for you as you wish. And her daughter was healed instantly. The gospel of the Lord. My brothers and sisters, we who are Christians are here today, in no small part, because of this woman. Indeed, I would go on to say that the gospel is open to everyone in the world because of the part played by this woman. Bear with me for a moment. Imagine, if you will, and it's not hard, an Iranian, Palestinian, uh, an American and Israeli coming together. And one person from that group is in desperate need in great trouble. And that person, perhaps it's a woman, looks among the other three groups and she sees someone there who is a great power of healing, maybe a doctor, maybe a surgeon, maybe someone who can help her desperately. And so she leaps across the bounds that have separated these four nations at this particular moment in history, and she reaches out and cries for help. And this one person from the group who has many good qualities, but some cultural limitations is at first slow to react, and then he does respond and he heals and he brings her daughter to life. I use that because that's part of the image I have of the two main characters we have in the gospel today. The person was first a Canaanite, and the Canaanites and the Jews for a thousand years had fought each other. The Canaanites were pagan, they believed in Paul, uh, the Jews believed in one God, Jehovah, and they fought each other. They they destroyed each other's sanctuaries. There's just tremendous hostility and great, great hatred for one another. And out of that this Canaanite culture comes, and given the culture of the time, a woman who asserts herself and places herself before Jesus. She's there. And then there's Jesus. And this is Jesus in the fullness of his being, he's God, but he's also a human being, one like us in all things but sin. And as a human being, he carries with him all the realities that come from his time, his culture, and his place, with both his strength and his limitations. And so they engage one another. And the engagement takes place in the form of four words, four times the word answer. When the f the first time the woman makes the plea, it says that Jesus gave no answer at all. He ignored her completely. And then the disciples got upset and said, Tell her to stop shouting at us. And so the second time he answered, he answered and said, I wasn't sent to work among the Canaanite pre people and the pagans. That wasn't my mission. My mission is to the people of Israel. But the woman doesn't stop. So the fourth, the third answer that Jesus gives is an answer that only can be described as a cultural one with limitations. He insults her by using as a dog. I mean, that's one of the ways they talk to one another in different religions. It's a real put down. And then the fourth answer comes, and it comes after the wit and the power of that woman of not giving up. And she responds to Jesus. And his fourth answer to her is your faith is really great. Let it be done for you as you wish. And the two stories here we need to know about that. The first is the story about the woman and her desperate need. Obviously, it's her daughter, her child, is possessed, we would say, a demon by psychological things that are destroying her. And she hears about this great miracle worker and she reaches out and pleads with him. In fact, she goes farther than pleads with him. What changed in this story is this woman. She changed from someone who was hesitant to see and recognize the goodness of Jesus and the power that lay underneath, beneath it, the depth of his humanity, the power of God. And so that's what her faith is. She calls Jesus Lord, Son of David. She sees in him something special, and she adores and worships it. So the woman didn't stay fixed. Yes, she was in need, but she cried out and reached for Jesus. The second reality is, and this is the marvelous part of the story, is Jesus changed in his humanity. He worked within the limitations of his time and culture. Because that woman, her wit, her persistence, her need, she let made Jesus change his mind. And from that moment on, Jesus is not just concerned with saving the Jews and the Israelites. Through him, the apostles will go out to all the world. And that's vitally important to you and to me. Let me put it this way You all and I all know that there are tremendous barriers that separating people by religion, by race, by culture, by traditions. And the traditions can be good, but if they freeze people into hostility, they need to be broken through. What caused the breakthrough here? This one particular woman, she did it by her strength, her courage, her need, her crying out, and her wit. She outwitted Jesus in dialogue. And the second thing that matters is that Jesus changed his mind and he responded to her and to her needs. And that means that all people, no matter of what background, if they open their hearts to goodness, to God, as best they can see God, then indeed healing is possible. It's possible to override the bonds of race and culture and creed and see the goodness and the presence of God in all things. Let us join together now, please, and let us profess our faith by reciting the Apostles' Creed. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, and suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day, he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. And so we pray for all those in our daily TV Mass Prayer Intentions book, we pray to the Lord.

We pray this month that Mary's assumption renews our hope of one day sharing eternal life with her son. We pray to the Lord. Lord hear our prayer. We take a moment to pray for our own personal intentions and needs. We pray to the Lord. Lord, you are the source of mercy and redemption. May your bounty and grace fill the world, fill all our hearts. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
