The principal design of Jesus coming in to the world is to reclaim such persons from the ways of sin and misery, and with great compassion He would bring them to repentance and obedience and the hope of eternal life.
It is the grand design of Christ’s mission on earth to recover those like Zacchaeus in his unconverted state, were wandering in the way to everlasting ruin.
John 1:4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
This man Zacchaeus was the chief tax collector in what was a regional tax office. He wasn’t just rich, he was filthy rich! But like the rich young ruler, he knew there was something he lacked. His curiosity about this Rabbi Jesus drove him up a tree so to speak, literally. When Jesus walks under the tree and looks up, eye contact, name, a calling alongside and acceptance, forgiveness and mercy! No doubt dumb founded, proudly Zacchaeus leads toward home, he stops, thinks of Jesus' reputation and declares his repentance. He has become the child of Abraham whom Jesus had sought!
