Paul again reminds us of who we are, where we came from and what our proper response to grace must be. But here he adds the news that there is now only one people of God. The playing field has been leveled. The great chasm of benefit that Israel once knew is gone; Israeli privilege is a thing of the past. We are not longer aliens from the commonwealth or strangers to the covenants, but children of Abraham. The great chasm has been filled with the blood of Jesus Christ.
"Christ has filled the chasm. He has taken us to the other side of it; He has brought us nigh; but what a gulf it was! Look down and shudder. Have you ever stood on a glacier and looked down a crevasse, and taken a stone and thrown it down, and waited till at last you heard the sound as it reached the bottom? Have you not shuddered at the thought of falling down that steep? But there you stood but a while ago, an heir of wrath, even as the others. So the Apostle puts it, " even as others". Oh!
