What happens when a routine trip to Jerusalem collides with twelve-year-old Jesus’s sense of divine purpose?
We explore a vivid moment from Luke 2 where Mary and Joseph lose track of Jesus, only to find him in the temple; listening, questioning, and astonishing the teachers with His understanding of the law. Paired with Ecclesiastes’ wisdom on seasons and timing, this story opens a path to examine silence, speech, and the slow work of understanding God’s call.
We walk through the rhythms of Passover pilgrimage, the shock of realizing a child is missing, and the tension in Mary’s heartfelt question: “Why have you treated us like this?” Then comes Jesus’ clarifying reply: “I must be about my Father’s business.” We reflect on how true growth often begins with listening before speaking, how holy curiosity refines wisdom, and how community and Scripture together form a classroom for the soul. Along the way, we consider the humility of returning to Nazareth in obedience and the quiet strength of Mary treasuring these moments in her heart.
This conversation also traces a powerful thread of foreshadowing: three days of anxious searching in Jerusalem echo forward to three days in the tomb. The pattern is not accidental. It reminds us that God meets us in the in-between.  When we wait, when we fear, when answers seem late yet God brings life out of loss.
If you’ve wondered how to discern the right time to speak, when to hold your silence, or how to stay faithful to your calling in ordinary routines; you’ll find practical insight and a gentle challenge here.
Join us as we sit with Scripture, honor the questions, and learn to be about the Father’s business.
What season are you in today, and what is God asking of you?

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 - King James Version
3 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
7b a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

Luke 2:39-52 - King James Version
39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.
40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.
42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

Welcome to the Christ Quarter. Thank you for taking a quarter of an hour out of this day to enjoy the presence of Christ and the words of Christ. Today let's read a section of Scripture, discuss what it means, and also how it applies to our lives. I hope that God will speak to you through my words, and more importantly, through his scriptures, and will bring you closer to him. I am blessed and thankful to have this time to speak with you, and I thank you so much for being with me here today. Today's scriptures lection is Ecclesiastes chapter 3, verses 1 and 7b. Also Luke chapter 2, verses 39 through 52. The King James Version reads as follows To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven, a time to keep silence, and a time to speak. And when they had performed all these things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee to their own city of Nazareth. And the child grew and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him. Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. And when they had fulfilled the days as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem, and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. And when they saw him they were amazed. And his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? Behold, thy father and I have sought thee, sorrowing. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? Wis ye not that I must be about my father's business? And they understood not the saying which he spoke unto them. And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them. But his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and statue and in favor with God and man. The NIV says it this way There was a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens, a time to be silent, and a time to speak. When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. And the child grew and became strong. He was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him. Every year Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival according to the custom. After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you. Why were you searching for me? he asked. Didn't you know I had to be in my father's house? But they did not understand what he was saying to them. Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart, and Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man. Let us pray. Lord, we thank you for this day. We thank you for the freedom and the ability to discuss your word and enjoy your presence. Help us to understand your word and your will for our daily lives more fully. We ask that you bless this discussion of your word, that it will speak to someone who needs to hear from you. We ask that you use these words to bring someone closer to you, and that you will touch their hearts to love others through action in your name. That each of us will do something to show love to their neighbor in action as well as in word. That each of us will do our best to represent you to the world. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. The verses for today are fun. Today we're going to get a little look at little Jesus getting into a little trouble. He has left his parents and family behind to go to the temple and hasn't let anyone know about it. It is an interesting and fun picture of little Jesus being aware of who he is and what his life path is. I've often wondered about when did Jesus become fully aware of the cross, the pain, and the humiliation he was heading towards. Today's passage gives us a glimpse of his early knowledge and perhaps the way in which he may have gotten into a little hot water as a child. Let's get right to it. Our scripture selection today begins with an affirmation of the rhythms and seasons of our lives. Our lives are ever changing, always giving us opportunities to learn and to grow. We learn over time when to speak and when to remain silent. In my personal experience, the ability to spend time with a treasured friend in silence is a sign of true friendship. Some of my most treasured moments have been those sitting with a friend and saying nothing at all. Similarly, some of my most meaningful moments have been time spent in prayerful reflection with God and with his word. Going further into our verses, we see little Jesus and his family going through the regular rhythms of life. They have just gone to Jerusalem to dedicate Jesus to the Lord and are heading back home to Nazareth. Jesus is twelve years old, just shy of the generally accepted age of adulthood of thirteen. This is also the time of the annual Jewish celebration, the evening dinner of the Passover feast, which is followed by the seven-day feast of unleavened bread. Thousands traveled to Jerusalem each year during this time, and Jesus, along with his family, are among them. But Jesus decided to do things a little differently this particular year. When it was time for everyone to begin the journey back home, Jesus, being all of twelve, decides that he will not leave with them and instead go to the temple. I don't know why he didn't tell anyone. Maybe he was being a willful 12-year-old. Maybe he envisioned himself as being a serious, not quite grown, almost adult. But whatever he was thinking, Jesus did not tell his parents that he was staying behind. Apparently he didn't tell anyone. So here we have the situation. Young Joseph and Mary are among family and friends. They're probably very happy and comfortable. They naturally assume Jesus is with them somewhere in the group. But at the end of the day, when it's time for everyone to come back together, Jesus is nowhere to be found. As a parent, I can imagine the horror and confusion Joseph and Mary must have gone through as they slowly realized that Jesus was not with them. They then did the only thing they could do, they turned around and went back to Jerusalem. I'm sure Joseph and Mary were frantic during the return trip, and even worse, they were unable to find Jesus once they arrived in Jerusalem. Verse 46 says that it took them three days to find little Jesus. If those three days include the day's travel away from Jerusalem and the day's journey back, then Joseph and Mary spent a full, nerve-wracking, frantic day searching for little Jesus. When they find him, where is he? In the temple with the teachers there, talking with them and asking questions. The teachers were amazed at Jesus' understanding of the law. At the age of twelve, many boys are beginning to learn the law by heart, but have not really begun to understand them. Jesus not only knows the law, but fully understands it already. The fact that Jesus is from a relatively poor family and from a small little town amazes the teachers even more. Mary, however, is not impressed at what Jesus is doing. She asks Jesus why he has treated her and Joseph in this way, worrying them for days. Jesus replied that they should have known that he was about his father's business. Mary and likely Joseph did not understand what Jesus meant. I think the full realization of who Jesus was may have been kept from them to allow Jesus to have a relatively normal upbringing. But I'm sure they thought about these events many times over the years as Jesus grew, and even more so after his resurrection. This is a very cute narrative of little Jesus getting into a little trouble, but it's also a foreshadowing of what is to come. In our scriptures today, Joseph and Mary thought they may have lost Jesus and searched for him for three days, only to find him well in the temple and doing his father's business. Before long, they will think Jesus has been lost to death and will search for him three days, only to find him again well and about his father's business. That concludes our scripture discussion for today. Thank you for spending this time with me talking about, learning about, and enjoying Christ. It is my hope that God has used my words to touch you today and has brought you closer to Him. Let us pray. Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debt to us. And lead us not to temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. I'll see you next time, right here on the Christ Order.
