Recruitment of health-care professionals on track for successful year: minister
03 November 2025
FREDERICTON (GNB) – More than 80 permanent physicians and more than 400 nurses have been hired by New Brunswick's regional health authorities since October 2024.
"Every New Brunswicker deserves to have access to the care they need, close to home," said Premier Susan Holt. "That's what drives province every day. Province bringing more doctors, nurses and specialists to our communities so New Brunswickers can count on a stronger, more reliable health-care system. There's still more work ahead, but these new hires mean more people getting the care they deserve, closer to home."
Recruitment and retention trends have improved across Horizon Health Network and Vitalité Health Network since last October. Hiring by the health authorities has resulted in net increases of physicians (84), registered nurses (214) and licensed practical nurses (201).
Health Minister John Dornan said
"Our health-care workers are the backbone of the health-care system, and we are tackling shortages, supporting recruitment and retention efforts, and creating workplaces where people feel respected, valued and safe," "I am pleased that the regional health authorities are making strides in recruiting physicians, nurses and allied health professionals. We will continue to work together to ensure we have a strong and sustainable health-care system that cares for New Brunswickers, now and in the future."
Workforce was one of six priority areas outlined in the provincial health plan, Caring for New Brunswick: Putting People at the Heart of Healthcare. Dornan said the government will continue to work with partners and stakeholders to ensure a sustainable workforce is in place to address needs in the health and long-term care systems, while also supporting employees, leading to higher retention rates.
A first-of-its-kind summit will be held in the province next month, focused on retaining, recruiting and strengthening the health and long-term care workforce. The summit will bring together leaders and stakeholders from across the health system.
The government is also working on increasing training options for New Brunswickers interested in a career in health care, including as a physician, nurse or allied health professional.
