“Then Jesus said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ ” - John 20:27

I always thought the passage of Jesus’ post-resurrection appearances to the disciples was fascinating, and so funny that we, as many generations of readers, gave Thomas a nickname enshrining his doubt. Really, Thomas just wanted the same proof of resurrection the other disciples got.

The thing I love about this story is actually what keeps me believing in Jesus. He gave Thomas what he needed to believe. Jesus knew Thomas needed closeness, to see and touch his wounds; so he met Thomas where he was. And personally, the knowledge that Jesus is willing to come close and to meet us where we are, is what I need to believe.

I hope Thomas doesn’t mind his nickname. Because to me, Thomas is the one who teaches us what it means for belief to be born. This Eastertide, ask for what you need. May we find our needs met in love, in community, in faith.

See you Sunday,
Sarah
