Ep #246: The "Work from Home" Movement is Full of Traps and Disasters
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this week’s episode I tackle the growing work from home movement and explain why I believe it is full of traps and long-term disasters, particularly for small to medium enterprises that want to achieve greatness. While many employees enjoy the comfort and convenience of working remotely, I argue that extraordinary results come from extraordinary teams – and great teams are built on trust, commitment and frequent, meaningful interaction. Without being physically together, the depth of relationships suffers, and without strong relationships you simply cannot build a world-class culture.
I explore the crucial difference between efficiency and effectiveness, and why imagination, creativity and innovation are far more likely to flourish when people interact face-to-face. The spontaneous ideas, problem-solving conversations and subtle discernments that occur in shared spaces are almost impossible to replicate on screens. I also examine how distrust can quietly grow in remote environments, weakening culture and undermining performance.
Drawing on nearly five decades of leading teams, I share why trust and caring – even love – are non-negotiable foundations for peak performance. I also question the political push for mandated work from home arrangements and what may really be driving that agenda.
If you want to build something great, you must build a great team. In this episode I challenge you to rethink how you structure your workplace and invite you to explore the principles in my book Passionate Performance to help you create teams that truly excel.
