Rather than guilt, inspiration is a much better motivator. If you can understand it and read it in a productive way, you'll be motivated to read it. And so getting students to understand it's not about the volume, it's not about how much you're reading, it's about connecting with the God who made you through the words he's already spoken. Building Hunger For God’s Word

Today is important, though. Okay. It's very important. We're talking about how to get students to read and understand their Bible. Obviously, it is a dream for the youth pastor to have students who are like, can't get enough, you know, of the Bible. I feel like we're finally at the point where my students can't get enough worship. Like at summer camp, they were begging, like, one more song, one more song. Like they it they would have been insatiable. And I'm like, that has been my dream for a really long time. I credit a lot of that to our worship leader, Hannah, and the way that she's just cultivated like a worship culture. And I feel like our next step is I want students to be insatiable for the word of God. And I think we're headed that way. I've seen a lot more of them bringing journals and taking notes. I don't print out note sheets anymore because maybe I'll be in a better mental place with it in the future. But all I would do is like make them look so great and spend time cutting them and printing them for kids to turn them into paper airplanes. They would be all over the floor. They would just get trashed. And I would just, you know, that feeling of like I just flushed money down the toilet. It was like I'm flushing all my time and creativity down the toilet. You don't care. So then I kind of put it in their hands. Like, if you're interested in taking notes, bring your own notebook because then I'm not low-key mad at you all the time. So that's been working good. And I feel like students who really care to engage are. They bring their journals and write notes. And some of them take notes on their phone. So you got to watch that a little bit of like, what are you actually doing on there? But they'll like show me, no, look, I am. And they are for the most part. So I feel like we're headed in that direction. And so I've been thinking about this topic of how to get students excited about reading the word of God on their own. And how can they understand it on their own? Because I think those two things go hand in hand. If you can understand it and read it in a productive way, you'll be motivated to

Teach The Real Reason To Read

read it. And so, number one, um, I think first getting students to understand the why. Why would you read God's word? I grew up in a Christian school, I grew up in a Christian home, I grew up going to church, and that was always the emphasis: read your Bible, read your Bible, read your Bible. And so I did. I'm a rule follower. I'm motivated by just doing the right thing, kind of person. And so I would. I'd read my Bible and I sat and read it and closed it and moved on. Like there was really no nothing there. And so I felt like I was more motivated from a sense of guilt, which was a really bad motivator because I didn't really understand why I was doing it. It's like I don't know what I'm reading, I don't know what this means, I don't know what this has to do with anything, but by golly, I read it. Right.

You know, check that box for the day.

Yeah. And I think I would have made a great Pharisee because I was like a box checker. And that gives you a false sense of security and it gives you a false sense of spirituality, and yet you're no closer to God. So you just wasted a ton of time, like me making note sheets. You just wasted a ton of time and you don't have anything to show for it. So it's trying to push past that point to get students to understand the why, you know, because you will have a handful of kids that will just do it because it's the right thing to do. But then, you know, to what end? You know, why reading just a read? No, that's not what we're trying to do. Rather than guilt, inspiration is a much better motivator. So, how do we inspire them to do so? So, here's a great question to pose to your students to get them to think about every morning when they wake up. If the God who created you, the God who wants a relationship with you, wanted to speak to you today, wouldn't you want to hear what he had to say? And the way that we hear from God is through his word, he's already spoken. So, what I try to get students to understand is even if you've read something before, so the the object is not quantity. It's like, I mean, I was really proud of myself when I finally read the entire Bible. I think that's important. However, when you are just going for volume, you aren't really engaged with the purpose as much. And so getting students to understand it's not about the volume, it's not about how much you're reading, it's about connecting with the God who made you through the words he's already spoken, because God's word is new for us every morning. So I tell them it might be a verse you've already read before, it might be a passage you're familiar with, might be a story you've already heard. Like same with your teaching. You know, I always say don't turn your ears off just because you know the story of Peter walking on water with Jesus, because God's word is new for us every single day. And he might want to tell you something different or you might notice something new, or based on where you're at in your life or your relationship with God, you'll pick up some new detail or new connection or new meaning. So you have to be here for it. And then we want to remind them that God's word has actual answers for every single thing we will face in life. It's like the life guidebook that no other content can give us. Like there's not enough answers on YouTube or, you know, in our algorithm. Like there is nothing that can touch the answers that God's word gives

Three Questions That Unlock Meaning

us. So teach them to read scripture through the filter of these questions. And this will kind of give them a framework instead of like, well, I read it. Like, okay, but could you answer this? And this is like without like having to write a Bible study, but these just hopefully these questions will come naturally. What does this, what I just read, what does this tell me about God and who he is? So you read two or three verses, and you could do this exercise with them. Read two or three verses and say, what does this passage right here tell us about who God is, his character? And then by extension, because we were made for God and for a relationship with God, what does it tell me about myself? What does it tell me about myself and my connection to God, my relationship with God? And then third and lastly, what is it asking me to do? Is there something here? Do I need to think differently? Do I need to pray differently? Do I need to act differently? Do I need to repent in a certain way? Is there something I'm missing that this is telling me to do? So the big, you know, narrative of scripture is the redemption story. It goes from Genesis to Revelation. So another highlight you can bring to their attention is where is Jesus in this story? So every time they go to scripture, we want them to understand you're gonna meet Jesus, look for him. He is there. This is not just a bunch of information. This is for you to meet him. So where is Jesus in the story? Where is the connection with the greater narrative? What is what part of the redemption story are we in here? How does this make a beeline to the gospel? How does this show us Jesus? And so reminding them, you know, scripture is supposed to be highly transformational, not informational. So that's sort of giving them now filters to read scripture through, which I think is super inspiring rather than just say, read your Bible, you have no excuse not to. And you know, you have so many ways you can read it. And if you can give time to video games, you can give time to the Bible. And I've said all those things, and I probably will say them again. I just think that alone is not motivating enough to sustain them in scripture of like, okay, I guess before I open TikTok or you know, Pinterest or something, I should go on the Bible so that I have permission now to do what I want to do. And I could see it that way sometimes. Like, you don't have permission to do what you really want to do until you unlock scripture and now it's like earning screen time or something for a kid. So we don't want it to be like just this guilt thing, like you have time. But why would you want to make that the first thing? Do you want to hear from an influencer and what they think first thing in the morning? Hello, you don't want to hear what I have to say first thing in the morning. Um, or do you want to hear from your creator first thing in the morning? What does he have for you today? It should maybe be like exciting. Like, what does he have new for you today? What is he trying to teach you today? What is he going to speak to you today? How can you know him more today? What's waiting for you on the other side of scripture? Because he can be found. He's waiting.

Um that reframes it too, so that it's like a positive, not so much like this. Well, do the thing you don't want to do so that you can do the thing you want to do. Yeah. You know, it's changing that mindset of well, this is what you should, you know, should want to do and and getting them to reframe that to realize that.

Absolutely. Yeah. And again, it's just that bottom line of guilt. Like I think we as youth pastors, pastors in general, we use guilt here and there to motivate people towards things. And it's not all, I mean, there's probably well-placed conviction, you know, and a lot it doesn't mean never convict anyone for anything. It's just maybe there's another way to inspire people to do something really like that's going to give them that spiritual nourishment rather than just you're bad if you don't, kind of thing. And that's where I fell uh when I was a kid. And I love what Jesus says, and I tell this to students a lot where he says, Man does not live by bread alone, but every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. So God's word for us as Christians is spiritual sustenance, right? So if you neglect it, if you don't eat, you're going to starve. If you don't eat spiritually, you're going to starve. Sometimes I ask students, like, do you feel far away from God? Do you feel spiritually kind of numb or distant? Hey, when's the last time you actually spent time in God's word or worship or prayer or communion or just something that put you back in the presence of God? Because likely you're starving spiritually because you thought just saying yes to Jesus that one time was enough, and now you should be good. It's like, that's like saying, Well, I ate in and out a week ago. Isn't that enough? Right. It's like, no, like you have to eat every single day. That's why eat in and out every single day. Yeah, that's great advice. You got your protein, you got your food.

So you're Yeah, that's true. That's true. Uh Jesus burgers, but it's very similar to that. And I think that's why he uses that symbolism of bread, daily bread. You can't survive as a human, like you're more than just a physical body needing physical needs. You can't live on bread alone. It's every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. So where's your spiritual sustenance coming

every single day? So, number two, how do we get them to actually do it? Well, speaking of daily bread, it's a great segue because I think one helpful thing with students is to expose them to as many different types and methods as possible to see which one they really resonate with. There was something, still is, it's kind of old

Tools And Plans Teens Will Use

school, called our daily bread. My Bible teacher in junior high had them in his classroom, free for the taking. I just saw them at our main office at the church, free for the taking. They are hands down what taught me how to read the Bible as a junior hire, especially because it felt so doable and I could understand it. And then I subscribed to it and they would mail it to me. And I did that as a kid. Like I loved it. So it would be one for every single day, a little paper devo, and it had the verse and then a devo to go with it, and then the parameters for how to read the Bible in a year, and then they'd have a verse of the day, and they fit it all in one teeny tiny little page. And I felt so like it felt so doable for me. And I felt like I understood everything I read and it gave me guidance and a boundary of here. Now that's paper, and unless you're an adult, you're probably not gonna use that. So for kids, I think the Bible app is amazing because they have all those reading plans. Even if you don't do a reading plan, you just go to the verse of the day, and then there's a devo attached to it. It's so simple. They're always easy to understand, they're always engaging, they're always challenging. So, I mean, I I watched the one this morning and it was phenomenal. It was about narrow is the road that leads to life, broad is the gate that leads to destruction. And she did this whole amazing illustration of like, it's not about the road, but to where it leads and all of that. And that was just delivered, hand delivered for free. The Bible app is free. The Bible project, I always scare students to that as well. I'm like, you guys are on YouTube all the time. So if you like animation and you're a visual learner, just turn on the Bible project while you're doing some, maybe you're folding your laundry or unpacking. Like when I like have to straighten my hair or do something like that, I will put on like a Bible project and I'm like, oh my gosh. Now I totally understand the book of Acts and they draw all these connections to Jesus and all of that. Another great thing is doing it together, like inspiring your small groups to do it together. Get on a reading plan and talk about it in their small groups, or maybe you do it with your student leadership team. That's what I do. Or even if you have a smaller youth group, do it as a youth group. Hey, this is what we're reading on our own, and then we're gonna come back and discuss it separately than the weekly message and all that, correct? Yeah, you could. I mean, if I was a smaller youth group, I would probably do that. I think we're at the size where that would be like I just give them the discussion sheet that day, and you know, they're answering questions based on a message they just heard. But in a smaller group, I think you can really hold each other accountable to hey, we're going through I an identity series and this is what we're reading today, and let's talk about it when we see each other this week, or you know, something like that.

Um within your, I don't know if you just said this or not, but even within your small group, you could probably do the same.

This is the first thing I said. Yeah, I think a small group is a really good setting for that. And then you teach them, hey, you read it on your own, then you come with something to discuss, discuss and share and talk, you know. So I think that's inspiring. Some people want to have, like, you know, people want to have a workout partner or something like that. Some people, that is how they're motivated is I want to do this together. And it's a great teaching ground for when they are gonna do it on their own later on. Hey, quick question

How To Create Aha Moments

episode. And then lastly, how we inspire and teach students to read the Bible is help them to start to draw conclusions on their own during your teaching and during small groups. So I try very hard to set them up to make the aha moment themselves. And that I think builds their confidence of connecting dots in the Bible. Like if I'm teaching on something, I'll be like, what does that remind you of? What did we just read? Like, is there another story that is similar to this, like in the New Testament? What did you see there? Or what do you think? Who's the hero of this story? Was it David? Was it Goliath? No, it was Jesus. Why is that? What is it pointing to later on? So our teaching is usually like a monologue, right? And sometimes that's fine. But if you have the opportunity to leave some blanks for them and like have them jump from one to another to see, like, oh, I figured it out. I, oh my gosh. And I love when I see a student make a connection and they're like, wait a minute, he did this, and that means that God did that. And then he was saying this in this verse, but it was echoed in that verse. Like, I'll I'll read something and I'll read something else, and I'll say, like, tell me when you see it. Like if we're doing messianic prophecy or something like that. So I'll go back and we'll read Isaiah and then we'll read something where it's fulfilled in the gospels, and I'll say, Tell me when you see it, tell me when you see it. And then they're like, Oh, oh my gosh, I saw it, I saw it. And it's so exciting for them because instead of me just saying, like, okay, so in the book of Isaiah, it predicts that Jesus is gonna blah, blah, blah. Now let's see it fulfilled here. What if we just read both and you tell me when you see it? And then I say, Why is this a big deal? Why does this matter? What is the gap between the two of these being written? How is this possible? What does that mean? What does it mean for who Jesus is? If this and this match and this has been hundreds of years, what is it telling us? And why is this a big deal? And so I like to get them drawing those conclusions on their own and having these light bulb moments because then I think they get excited of like what else is in there? Like, what other little gems could I find? And the Bible becomes exciting when you can read it rather than just like he will be a lamb that is slain. Okay, I've heard that before, but but let's finish that thought. Where else did that go? Like, I think when the Bible really became alive for me, it was when I learned how to make connections all throughout scripture.

Like to emphasize the point that it all is all connected, they're not just a bunch of individual stories that have nothing to do with it.

And that's what I kind of thought. And maybe they told me that and I just wasn't like clocking it or something. Like, but I all of a sudden was like, wait, this and like it's just this one big, very rich story that is like, whoa. And when you see it, you can't unsee it. And that's what I want for my students to start to see like, no, this isn't just a random book of lineage and a random book of laws and a random book of poetry and a random book. Of history, each one is telling the same story in a different part of it differently, but it's all connected. And then you see scripture like ah, I get it now. So always in your teaching, move them toward that connection, and then the Bible does become easier to read because you're looking for the clues, as you know. Uh what's his name would say?

This one, this one's straight up like youth ministry alley, because it's a little gross. But make sure if you're watching on YouTube, you put your answer in the comment section below. So what is the least gross way to sneeze? Or like maybe say like the most polite way to sneeze? And I'll give you a few options. And obviously, there's other would be the the last one if you have a different version. But I feel like the most common way people say, you know, they teach it in schools is to sleep sleeze. Sneeze into your arm, like your the your elbow, basically. So there's that's there's that option as number one. Or A. B. I I like this one. This is my personal favorite. Into your shirt. C into your hands, which I've seen.

Because so many people do it. I think like it's so gross. But obviously, people must think that's a good way to do it. D released into the air in a like neutral direction. That's what I use. People over here, you're throwing it over, you know, in the other way. And then the uh the uh the final one would be well two final ones. The final one would be uh into a handkerchief, but I'm like, that's really old school. I don't know who carries the handkerchief with them. And then finally, is there another option that you think would be the most polite way or least gross way?

I think the best one is turning around and sneezing into your shirt.

Because it could still come through. But what do I normally do? I just kind of like run away and like sneeze. Because it comes my sneezes in the last few years come without warning, they're like so 3 2 1. It's like, oh my gosh, I'm sneezing. So if you have time to put your shirt over your head and turn around, all the way over your head. I think that would be the best one. Because the the elbow thing I just think about hugs. That's exactly what I was gonna say. Put your arm around somebody. Yep. And our students do that all the time. They like put their arm around each other during worship, they hug a lot. And I just am like, that's not foolproof. Better than your hands. Hands, well, totally just right in your general direction. Is the worst, but hands would be second worst. Because then I'm like, think of everything you're gonna touch.

Right. I've had people maybe not sneeze in their hands, but do the cough into their hands before they shake your hand. And I've seen it happen, and I'm always like too afraid to stop it in the moment. And I just think I'm just gonna immediately wash my hands. I'm a germophobe, so anytime I walk I shake hands, I immediately think, okay, I need to wash my hands. No offense to anybody.

And then I like don't want to touch anything with the hand. I'm very aware that this which is horrible as a greeter at church.

Like for 30 minutes, I'm like, do not touch anything on my face with my right hand, you know. So my mine is always the sneezing into the shirt. I just think some people think it's gross because you're like sneezing onto yourself. I know. I'm thinking it more about, hey, for all you.

It grosses me out for that person, but it doesn't gross me out for me. And I just think, ew, your chest is covered in mucus. Sneezy.
