Show Notes

Interludes are an opportunity to get to know the host, Ropa.  In each season , we will sprinkle different interludes in which Ropa gets to reveal aspects of her life. In this debut interlude, we get to know why Ropa named the podcast Afro Comb. We also explore her experiences learning to fall in love with her natural hair. She brings along Dzorai, who, just like Ropa, was born and raised in Zimbabwe. Together, they explore the complexity of growing up in a society that taught them to apologize for their nappy hair, before it taught them how to love it. They discuss the practice of using hair relaxer to permanently straighten hair. They touch on the narrowness of the definitions of 'neat', 'presentable' or 'professional' hair. They laugh and heal from the trauma of hair salon experiences with people who did not know how to properly care for natural hair. The conversation ends on a positive note about how they individually unlearned the hatred for natural hair, and began to embrace their own.
