leverage your BRAIN to achieve your goals
Jenny starts out sharing her covid experience while in quarantine, including her manic hair cutting episode. They move onto goals, the role of tracking, and the neurocircuitry of goal pursuit. Tait shares how she got herself to the top of her field as a dancer at the age of 16 and how a dance class has a built in reward system. She also shares her theory of why she and Jenny didn't need external motivators while in recovery.
They discuss the neurotransmitters of our goal pursuit circuitry:
- Amygdala (fear, worry)
- Basal ganglia (go/no go)
- Lateral prefrontal cortex (executive functions)
- Dopaminergic (motivation)
Soft addictions are harder to change than when you are at rock bottom. They discuss using the surprising technique of fear as a motivator, using the dopamine (the motivation molecule) reward system, different kinds of visualizations, the power of eye focus and how that can double the chances that you meet your goal.
They discuss how tracking can help with awareness, establishing a baseline, identifying problems, and focusing attention. Also, have you chosen the right goal? They discuss how to know if you have a goal that is attainable.
The funnies: Tait tells the story of her family's tradition of posing with the Easter ham and the "ham van".
