And by Mairead O'Mahony from Kerry, who we've dragged her out of the Braille team for the day. We have dragged her out of a Braille meeting. Mairead, how are you? Good, thanks. How are you, David? Awesome. Thank you. Can't complain at all. So, Joe, I'll start with you. Let's jump right into this Apple event then. Did you watch it? What were your thoughts? What stood out to you?
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, I did watch it. And look, as usual, I like it. It's entertaining. My general thoughts were a bit like the stocks and shares. I didn't get overexcited. It went down a slight notch compared to some other events. There was some interesting things, but in general, I wouldn't be rushing out by a new iPhone, by the way.
SPEAKER_04:Okay. And Maraid, yourself?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I tuned into little bits of it as well, and I did a lot of reading up online on it as well. Very similar to Joe as well, there was a good few software updates for things like the AirPods and things. Maybe I might consider upgrading the AirPods and things, but as for the watch and things at the moment, I think, you know, I'll use what I have at the moment. But the AirPods are kind of stood out to me.
SPEAKER_04:Interesting. Well, look, let's take the event in order then. So we started off with the AirPods. And as you mentioned there and allude to Maraid, there is a new upgrade to AirPods, namely the AirPods Pro 3 have been announced. We previously had the AirPods Pro 2. They are getting a few new features, new sensors. They will now be able to track your heart rate during workouts which is really cool and they are also going to have better noise cancelling more clear transparency and just better sound in general. Mairead are those the kind of things that are exciting you about the new AirPods and what stood out to you from those AirPods?
SPEAKER_02:Definitely the noise cancelling I always love when there's an improvement on the noise cancelling because while you have the transparent options as well it's nice to have the complete noise cancelling so And for me, it would be that and the better sound as well, definitely, because I kind of I rely on mine a lot, especially when I'm doing a lot of traveling and things. So I just kind of think, you know, I haven't I haven't upgraded the AirPods in a couple of years. So the battery in mine is kind of draining now. But anyway, I don't get as long out of the charge. So I think, you know, that's that's for me.
SPEAKER_04:That's interesting. And these, you know, I never really found myself using. I have the Pro 2s, which I love them. I think they're great earphones. But I never really used the active noise cancelling a whole lot. Do you think, you know, you use that a lot and you like it?
SPEAKER_02:I would, yeah, on trains and buses definitely because otherwise you can hear everybody's conversations and especially when people are on speakerphone and things. And especially buses, I find, you know, the engine can be quite loud on the buses and then you have the radio at the front of the bus as well. So it does kind of drown out a lot of I kind of find it a bit distracting if I'm hearing a lot of other things as well.
SPEAKER_04:Ah, you see, I'm nosy, Mairead. I like hearing everybody else's conversations.
SPEAKER_02:I guess with music, I just like to totally tune out and, you know.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, I
SPEAKER_02:get that. Especially if I know I'm not getting off the bus or train for a bit. You know, if I'm near a stop or if I'm only on it for 10 minutes, yeah, I'll have the transparent mode on.
SPEAKER_04:Super. There are new ear tip sizes as well. We're going to five different style of ear tips and the actual headphone itself is getting slightly smaller, I believe, from what I can tell here. Is that of interest to you at all?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, definitely smaller headphones. I do still think they can be a little bit big on the ears and I think new ear tips are always a good thing too just to find, you know, the perfect fit as well, you know, just to kind of make it a more sealed fit as well.
SPEAKER_04:Awesome stuff. Joe, do you use AirPods much? What are you thinking?
SPEAKER_03:I do. Generally, I love AirPods. I don't like wearing them for long, long periods of time. I find they, like for people that don't like something that protrude into the ear, maybe these may not be for them But that always helps with the noise cancellation, of course. Someone said that stick outs, they might be a bit smaller, but they stick out slightly more out of the ear. Maybe that's to help with the, there's a new live translation mode coming. So when you put on live translation, it actually lowers the other person's voice, then translates it almost in real time into your ear. And, well, the plan is for both parties to have AirPods Pro 3, but that's unlikely to happen. So in the case that they don't have the AirPods Pro 3, you can show them what you're saying on your phone. Instead, you can hold out your phone and show the person in the other language what you've said. So it will work out whatever way you do it. But that was an interesting one, I thought, especially if you're going on holidays or you're going, the example they showed was if you went to America and you're trying to get some of the products that described are the prices and bargaining them down and all that kind of stuff. So that was interesting. The extra couple of hours, battery life, of course, is good for anyone who does like to wear them for long periods of time. But that's excluding myself. Sometimes I fall asleep with them in my ears, but that's another story. Yeah, I mean, and David, as you said, the best part of going on the bus is listening to other people's conversations.
SPEAKER_04:Absolutely. 100%. Yeah, I think that interesting you mentioned that live translation. I do wonder how good it will be because there's been a few attempts now do you think they'll crack it Joe?
SPEAKER_03:I never get a chance to use this thing you know what I mean so I hope they crack it I think they just about will crack it I'd love to get a recording from somebody that tried it maybe somebody from Ireland send us in a clip of them actually using it God knows we have a diverse community over here now maybe we should have plenty of opportunities to try try it, but I've never got the opportunity to try it, and maybe I will down the line somewhere. I think they will crack it, yeah, they will eventually.
SPEAKER_04:Absolutely. Well, that is the new AirPods Pro 3. They are coming in at€249, which is pricey, but not as pricey as we expected. Mireille, do you seem happy with that price?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I definitely expected like the late 200s, like 279 or a bit more even. So I think that's probably the best price they've had there in a good few years with them.
SPEAKER_04:Interesting stuff. Well, there you go. Those, like most of the things that we'll be discussing today, pre-orders open now and they will be available and shipping on Friday as we record this. So we're recording this on Wednesday. They will be available on Friday. But let's move on then to Apple Watches. Apple Watches were next on the agenda and we're We're getting three new Apple Watches for this round. We're getting the Series 11, we are getting the SE3, and we are getting the Ultra 3. So the Series 11 is their kind of standard Apple Watch, I guess, if you will. Their SE3, it's the more entry-level, so slightly more affordable, but doesn't have quite as many features and so on. And then the Ultra 3, that's their Pro Watch, so a bit more expensive and a little bit more affordable. fancy, more bells and whistles and so on and so forth. Lots of interesting stuff. Joe, are you an Apple Watch fan?
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, I have a 7 on my hand at the moment. Yeah, I do. I like the Apple Watch. I wouldn't be fanatical about it now, but I do have a habit. I like wearing it, so I like to track my steps and obviously check the time. The watch is for there, isn't it? Maybe not anymore. Loads of
SPEAKER_04:different
SPEAKER_03:things now I take the odd call on it not very often if my phone isn't within reach I'll answer it yeah I don't know if I'll upgrade yet the SE is very interesting though it's the new SE 3 it's at a very good price point as you'll call out prices later on the Ultra yeah I think not for me yet it would be one I'd consider but I just like the fact that the battery life is getting better on them all the time on all the watches that's the biggest pain about the Apple Watch is you can't send any charge to it when you're wearing it you have to take it off and sometimes then you can forget to actually bring it with you if you're after charging I actually
SPEAKER_04:forgot to charge mine today believe it or not so it's batteries low
SPEAKER_03:that's it you know so it's no good to you when it's not on you so yeah like Fitbits have a big advantage there they have a 7 or 8 day battery life on some of them so yeah I long for the day that we can get that. But sometimes when you have too many features or gimmicks on a watch, that does take from the battery life. It also has an always-on display as well on the SE3 now. So that was also a good thing for some people.
SPEAKER_04:Yeah, there's lots in this. So this was the area of the event that was most exciting to me. I'm purchasing an Ultra 3 this time around. I have the Series 5, which is a good few years old at this point and it's starting to wear itself out now unfortunately and voiceover just isn't as responsive. It's an antique David. It's an antique you know it's one of those a true classic Joe but it's one of these things where there's a lot of new features coming to the series 11 like the you know the new kind of blood hypertension your blood pressure monitoring that can be checked over the course of a month by the Apple Watch as well as a number of other features like the workout body and stuff like that but you're also getting I suppose for those who do decide to upgrade now you're also getting things like the blood oxygen and stuff like that which I don't have on the series on the series 5 but they're adding lots of different things 5G support which is really nice you know as you said the always on display for the for the SE model there as well. And the SE model starts at a really, really competitive price point. Actually, I think it's 269 it's starting at, which is a really, really competitive price for someone who just wants to get their foot in the door with Apple Watch.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, I think that's a great price point. Almost getting to the stage where you could buy maybe one of your kids one for Christmas if they're at that age, you know, like anything above 300, you're saying, look, they could take it off, leave it somewhere, whatever, you know, I know that can happen in anything, but Fitbits are so much better for kids because they don't have to take it off their arm so often. But yeah, but they're getting to the price point where they're, I suppose, a little bit more affordable, you know, apart from obviously the Ultra, the the premium job there. But yeah, definitely the SE, I think, I like the fact it's under 300.
SPEAKER_04:Mairead, I do want to ask you, you have, I believe, a Series 4, so yours is even, if mine is ancient, yours is antique. Mine is more antique. Yeah, yours is pure antique. Now, you mentioned to me previously that you were considering kind of just not upgrading the watch. Why, first of all, and has anything Apple announced changed that kind of kind of view for you?
SPEAKER_02:Well, I think for me, I guess, like, I'm a bit, I suppose, in a way, I like the physical Braille watch. I like to be able to just discreetly check the time, whereas I kind of find if you're in a meeting and that kind of thing, you know, that you're kind of, if you press, if you tip the watch or whatever, everybody can kind of hear it. It's not discreet, whereas the Braille watch is very discreet. I suppose another thing, like I do, you know, you know, I don't get very little use out of my Series 4 now because the battery is pretty much, I only get a couple of hours out of the battery. I can't update it anymore. I would use it a lot, all right, for like when I'm doing park runs and cycling and that kind of thing to track all that. But outside of that, I kind of don't use it as much as I'd like to use it because I kind of find every time I tip off it, the voiceover starts talking away and I'd love if there was kind of a lock feature on it that you'd really have to hold down something kind of firm enough before it would wake it up again so I think the discreteness kind of I suppose stops me a little bit at the moment plus I suppose everything is on my phone as well then and things as well so I just kind of I like the physical braille.
SPEAKER_04:Would you be looking at something like a dot watch and in that case then does that have a lot of like do smart braille watches have as many of your kind of fitness tracking features is that?
SPEAKER_02:No they wouldn't have they wouldn't they'd be just a really, the watch, that kind of stuff, really. I wouldn't kind of, yeah, I kind of just, I suppose, really get used to just the old Braille watch, really. Now, I'd love if a smart Braille watch came out, really, like that was very, you know, modern and up-to-date and you could do all that kind of thing on it. That, yes, I would definitely see myself going for.
SPEAKER_04:Interesting. Interesting stuff. Yeah, I've decided to go for the Ultra. Why do? It's a good question, Joe. I think, for me, it was either going to be the Series 11 or the Ultra 3. And I was in two minds on which to go for. I've gone for the Ultra 3 for a few different reasons. Firstly, the action button. I like the idea of being able to quickly, you know, start different things, run series shortcuts, all of that sort of stuff from the action button on the watch, on your wrist. I think that's really helpful. Also, the fact that it's just, frankly it's their best watch is kind of part of it for me um i would probably get away with the series 11 um and i think for 99 percent of people the series 11 is going to be the right fit i just felt like i like where the ultra 3 is going and maybe it might kind of last a little bit longer it's got slightly better battery life all of these things um uh satellite support not that i'm ever going to use that like realistically but i i do like just where the ultra 3 is going so that was what i i decided to go for uh but i certainly was in two minds about it because the the series 11 and indeed the se are really good watches at this point i think um and yeah i suppose that was the decision i made but i i could see a just a standard Series 11 or SE.
SPEAKER_03:So what's the battery life on the Ultra then?
SPEAKER_04:They're saying, I believe, around kind of 36 hours of kind of just general kind of use. So you get the day and a half, you know, which is really good that you get like the sleep tracking and stuff with it. They did announce that on the newer watches as well, they're introducing things like sleep score as well, which is a new feature that is coming to the watch. So just better sleep tracking as well as the the I guess blood pressure monitoring and I also I know it sounds stupid I love the idea of workout buddy and I know this is coming to the series 10 as well and other some of the other previous watches but I do love the idea of being able to put in your your air pods and get some encouraging notes because it's very it sounds really accessible because when I'm if I'm doing a walking walk work out or whatever I have to touch my wrist to have voiceover reads the information where this seems to proactively tell you you know with a bit of encouragement hey David you're doing a great job you've just completed a whole kilometer you know I think that's actually quite cool and quite a unique feature even though it hasn't been considered as an accessibility feature if you know what I mean so I'm liking a lot of what I'm seeing from the new Apple Watches uh and I suppose time will tell I'll have one arriving soon enough and we'll probably do a review for Tech on Tap I guess
SPEAKER_03:as long as it doesn't keep saying David it's time to stand you know you're doing okay then
SPEAKER_04:yeah 50 what is it 10 to the hour there all the time you know it's time to stand up I'll have that shortly here as well but look that's what you're up against isn't it but there you go so Mairead you're not upgrading Joe you're happy kind of with what you got well time will tell how these new watches go go. And let's move on then to the third and I suppose the biggest announcement for most people which is the new iPhone. We are at 17 now. So 17, 17 Pro and also the iPhone Air which we'll touch on separately. But let's start with the 17 for a minute. So it's all the standard kind of iPhone upgrade stuff. Brighter screen, faster processor, slightly better cameras slightly better battery life all of that in the same kind of design interestingly the screens are getting bigger now but anything that stood out to you here Joe?
SPEAKER_03:nothing majorly stood out on the 17. To be honest with you, if I was buying a phone right now, I'd probably buy a 16 because it's cheaper and the 17 doesn't warrant me to pay an extra 300 quid for it, you know what I mean? At this very moment. I wouldn't put anybody off 100% for the 17 because obviously it'll get the updates a bit longer and stuff like that as the A19 chip and bigger screen if you prefer that kind of thing bigger screens are just getting bigger because people are watching more content online all of the time so like it's getting to the stage where people have their phone in their hand at the average of eight hours a day you know and we'll be getting to a more extreme of that going forward I think with the way people use their phone so screens are naturally getting bigger I know look everything goes in a circle there will be a stage one time down the line that might go back the other way but I I think the 17 didn't stand out enough for me to say, oh, there's an amazing feature on this, and I'm going to go out and purchase this phone. It has a new color, of course. I think the 17 has a new orange color, if your color is a big thing. It's a 48-megapixel front camera as well, selfie camera. So that's obviously a good thing for doing your conference calls or just your FaceTime calls and things like that. And centre
SPEAKER_04:stage crucially coming for blind or visually impaired people centre stage coming to the iPhone now I think is a big thing as well
SPEAKER_03:Yeah that's definitely a big thing I know some people are trying to get away from conference calls a little bit and they were bigger back a couple of years ago but anytime we can get a hand of having us look I suppose more generally like anyone else and get our faces in the middle of of the camera middle of the screen it's always a good thing there's nothing worse than having to ask somebody am I in the centre or whatever at least you're ready you're ready and you're able and you're ready to go for a meeting and look professional I always look professional Joe well that's good sometimes we have to turn off the old camera but when you have the camera on we're ready to go have the shirt and tie on and you're in the centre and we're all go so yeah I think centre stage coming to the iPhone yeah, it's a good thing.
SPEAKER_04:Absolutely. I look very stylish on camera, must confirm. But there you go. So, yeah, so there's a few different bits with this as well. As you say, the center stage camera, you will be able as well to record on both the front and back camera at the same time, which is interesting. So if you want to, you know, let's say you want to get your reaction as you're watching something, you can do that as well. But ultimately nothing too crazy out of these new forms
SPEAKER_03:I missed that one actually David that's quite a good one especially for content makers you know I actually missed that one somehow but yeah I've seen a lot of that now and especially in the big GA matches over the summer there they seem to get the analysts reactions on and when goals go in and stuff like that so I suppose for a personal content creator maybe there seems to be a lot of those influencers at matches now that'll be an interesting one to see if they're going to use this feature
SPEAKER_04:Absolutely Mairead anything with the new 17 or 17 Pro that stood out to you?
SPEAKER_02:I like definitely the better camera for people alright especially if they're taking pictures and things and you know scanning documents that kind of thing but for me I suppose I have the 15 Pro so to be a while before I'll do any upgrades I think I'll probably keep mine going as long as I can but yeah I'd agree with Joe there like you'd probably go with the 16 maybe some people might anyway because it is does cost a little bit less and to be honest you'll still get even with the 15 and the 16 you'll get a lot of the new updates as well with software with iOS updates and things as well it's just you know physical things like the better camera you may not you won't have access to but I think the majority features you will have with slightly older phones
SPEAKER_04:Phones like the 16E as well are still going to be great models there's no 17E yet but you know there's still some brilliant phones in the 16 line up so that is going to be interesting to see what people end up opting for. But shall we move on to the elephant in the room, which is the iPhone Air. And I know we skipped that a little bit there, but the iPhone Air is in the middle of the two phones price-wise. So it's over a thousand euros here in Ireland. So it's meant to be kind of pro, but just not quite as pro as the real pro. But it's also very thin. It's got a slightly unique design. There seems to be, from what I understand, there's kind of like a lump on the back of the thing. So like the top kind of half of the phone is like bulkier than the bottom half of the phone, I believe. So it's a slightly new design for the iPhone. But Joe, this is a really odd kind of phone in a lot of ways, especially considering its price.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, a lump on the back of it, that's a very technically put... Those
SPEAKER_04:are the words Apple used, a lump.
SPEAKER_03:A lump, okay. I don't know, a lump is a condition you might have. But yeah, I think it appealed to me first when I heard about it at first hand, but then reading into it more, I hear it only has one speaker and the one speaker is situated at the earpiece. And I could imagine for voiceover users that Well, first of all, if it happens at one speaker and it gets a bit muffled, it's going to be a disaster. But will it sound any good? Can you get any sort of stereo sound out of the phone? Then maybe not. I'd have to have it in my hand really to, I suppose, really give a proper answer on all of that. But the one speaker thing, I do not like the sound of. Also, battery life, it's a little bit smaller of a smaller battery, but it's probably better battery than most phones people have in their hand right now. now but you can buy an accessory which is a MagSafe cover which MagSafe battery cover which will give you up to 40 hours battery life but this means spending more money again you know so not too bad for someone that yeah at that point at that
SPEAKER_04:point you're as well off I think going for a pro rather than buying the air and a battery case for it I wouldn't see a whole lot of reasons not to go for a pro at that point
SPEAKER_03:at that point you Yeah, sure. The battery cover obviously is going to add a little bit more. I thought the whole idea of having an Air is to have this slim, cute phone in your hand that you love holding, you know, but then you're going to add a battery pack to it, which I presume is nice and slim as well, but obviously we'll have to add a little bit to the phone. It might feel great, though. Jewelry is out for me, though, you know, especially in some of these accessories. It's the fairly slow charging MagSafe cover as well, as far as I'm aware. So look, I think the Air doesn't appeal to me right now. It did at first. I said, oh, cool, they're bringing out a real slim, nice phone to hold in your hand. But from a couple of little things that I've listened to and read about it, I think the 17 will appeal more to me now if I had to buy a new phone right now.
SPEAKER_04:Sure. Mairead, your thoughts?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, I'd be very similar as well. I think, yeah, with the way it is, you may as well go with the Pro One speaker, I think, yeah. Even for headphones, I don't think it would sound great when you'd have headphones in it. But I guess we'll have to kind of see when it comes out and, you know, see if we get to experience using any of them to see what they're like.
SPEAKER_03:Yeah, for sure. And David, it's eSIM only, so I'm not sure about Every carrier over here in Ireland does eSIM, but I'm presumed they're going to have to push towards that now. Obviously eSIM so that they can make more room for the limited battery space. Yeah, and the camera at the back is obviously not as good as the other phones. It's obviously very good, but not as good as the Pro and the 17. It doesn't have some version of optical zoom. I'm not sure how much difference that makes to all of us, but if camera and photography is your thing the Air is not the way to go.
SPEAKER_04:Probably will impact some people with the magnifier as well I'd suspect but it is one of these interesting things. Like I'll be honest for me this just doesn't look like a great phone especially for its price but I'm open to being proven wrong on that. I will be curious to see the reviews of it but I think nearly the 17 is nearly looking like a better phone in a lot of ways um maybe this is aesthetically different and it does have a bigger screen so the standard 16 sorry the standard 17 is 6.3 inches uh for the screen and then that's six and a half for the uh for the air now look there is a bit of a difference there uh might be a better screen but i just don't know this doesn't this phone doesn't excite me so look time will tell on that. Is there anything we missed Joe or is that the Apple event in a nutshell?
SPEAKER_03:There was no massive headlines on the phone. I think that's why the stocks were down a little bit. I know I brought that up earlier on but when there is a massive headline and it excites a few people you know the stocks go up and people rush out to buy the phones. I don't think there's anyone rushing out to buy these phones you know what I mean as such unless they were just holding out to buy a new one anyway. Saying that Apple did have record breakings sales in the last year but it's a lot of stuff is about hype and marketing but I don't think the event overall I think the AirPods were my most exciting improvement on things and the watches were okay too especially the SE3 so I think that's where I would go and the 17 phone the Pro to be to me unless it's for a work environment and you need a pro phone because of all that extra battery life and stuff I wouldn't be paying over 1300 euros for it myself but I just think it's overpriced for what it is 15 pro 16 pro do almost as good a job and I think look yeah if I was advising anyone to go buy a phone right now personally I'd be pushing them and they wanted an iPhone of course if they were in that eco system I would be pushing them to say look think about the 16 or the 16E personally right now at this very moment or else wait for the next version of the E could be the 17E or the 18E but that's just me David so yeah that's my summary on the whole situation.
SPEAKER_04:Mairead what was your standout if you had to pick one?
SPEAKER_02:Yeah, for me, again, it would be the AirPods because I haven't upgraded mine in a good few years. So again, like with the slightly older phones as well, you'll pretty much get all the features in the iOS updates. So unless you really need to upgrade, I'd be holding off for now or get a 15 or 16.
SPEAKER_04:Interesting stuff. Interestingly, for those who are interested, there is an iPhone, I suppose, Pro Max, the 17 Pro Max, and it's going to be the first iPhone ever to have two terabytes of storage. This is going to be their most expensive phone. Any guesses on what this new phone is going to be costing? Joe, do you want to go first and then we'll go to Murray to see who gets closer?
SPEAKER_03:I didn't look it up now, to be honest with you, because I wouldn't be in the market for that particular phone. But look, let me get That's 2,200 euros. Hooray,
SPEAKER_04:let's go for it.
SPEAKER_02:I would say 1,700.
SPEAKER_04:Joe, you are closer, sir, but still under at a cost of 2,489 euro for the iPhone 17 Pro Max with two terabytes of storage. Their most expensive phone. Crazy
SPEAKER_03:money. Wow.
SPEAKER_02:They're really cashing in on the storage.
SPEAKER_03:They really are. Look, I do think there is a certain cohort out there that do need two terabytes at this stage in life. Whether it's people that are saving everything from their metal glasses onto their phone or photographers or maybe sound engineers or podcasters, there's just so many gigabytes that people need to save nowadays that I can see a market out there for that phone, but not for me at 2,000, I think you said 400. So look, but yeah, that's massive. That's a massive price for a phone.
SPEAKER_04:It really is. I think, yeah, yeah no two terabytes is definitely needed in some contexts like one episode of talking technology for us at this point is like two gigabytes alone um so and you know that's not factoring in video and all of the other stuff that you know even i'm looking at from my point of view but the idea of paying uh that kind of price 2489 euro um vision ireland don't pay that well joe
SPEAKER_03:Not that well, no. Look, we won't even dwell on that phone for a while. But anyone that is going to purchase that particular phone, we'd love to hear about it and hear why and what you use all those terabytes for.
SPEAKER_04:Absolutely. Yeah, I see the appeal, but not at that price. But there you go. So, hey, as Joe said, do let us know your thoughts. Are you going to be upgrading to any of these phones What are your thoughts on them? What about the watches? What about the AirPods? Anything that stood out to you from the event? We'd love to hear it. You can send us a WhatsApp voice note. The way to do that is 086-199-00001. You want to use the voice message button that is labeled with voiceover at the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. You can also send us an email if you'd like to content at vi.ie. But for now, Joe, thank you very much. Mairead, thank you very much. And thank you for listening too. We will see you in two weeks time for another episode of Talking Technology with VLabs. See you then. Music
SPEAKER_00:Thanks for watching.
