In this episode, I outline a ten-step questionnaire to decide if your novel is a good idea and if it has market potential.
1. Is the subject matter relevant? Would it be considered a hot topic?
2. Do you feel a personal connection with the characters or place?
3. Is the character already talking to you in their 'voice'?
4. Do your family and friends genuinely like it?
5. Is it an idea that just won't go away?
6. Do you see yourself working on it for an extended period of time?
7. Do you have the expertise to write about the subject matter or do you have the means to research it?
8. Is it something that is appropriate for someone of your background, race, religion, and sexual orientation to write about?
9. Are there other novels that are similar that already exist?
10. Have you already started it? Has the beginning come easily to you?
