IT IS NOT:

  • It’s not a news show, but we learn stuff.
  • It’s not a sports show, but Garinger beats Independence all the time and we love the game.
  • It’s not an “artsy” show, but local artists/performers are always in the house.
  • This is not a food show, but I love livermush!(‘Nuff Said”) So, we'll be talking about food a lot!

IT IS:

  • It is a Labour of Love for myself and my Hometown.
  • It is a show about you and me and finding out why the Charlotte/Metrolina region is a great place to be!
  • It is a show that I get to introduce you folks I grew up with who influenced me in my life. (I got some "Very Unique" friends y'all so this should be interesting!)
  • It is a show that I share some of the many talented friends I’ve met along the way.  (I got some "Very Unique" friends y'all so this should be interesting!)

TJJS EP 7 Tribute To My Son-Big Ivan FINAL

[00:00:00] JJ: [00:00:00] It's the Jeff Johnson show brought to you by OTE at Of This Earth Global Dot Com.  Of This Earth Global Dot Com. Clothing connection, OTE

[00:00:16] Greetings or the way we say it in the South. Hey y'all and welcome to this edition of the Jeff Johnson show a real genuine. Authentic podcast, where I get to reconnect with the people, places and events of my hometown area, Charlotte, North Carolina, and the whole Metro liner region. Coming up on this Jeff Johnson show join me for a conversation I had with a Charlotte music legend.

[00:00:45] He's a talented trombone artist, music teacher, and creator of a barbecue sauce. That is nothing but prime time. Baby, Big Ivan, Ivan Hall is in the house. Join me its going to be a lot of fun, [00:01:00] but first things first, this past number of days. We've been intensely watching all of the protests over the murder of George Floyd.

[00:01:10] People have come out all over the world and use their collective voice to say, this will not stand. Things have to change folks. You know, from what I see a change is going to come and it will be led by our valued and loved younger generations. Many so-called adults have called out our young folks and they called them lazy.

[00:01:32] Self-centered selfish. Well, if you haven't been hiding under a rock, you can plainly see that it is the young with their heads full of grand ideas and focus, passion that have been leading the way they are organizing the protests. They are helping people with the COVID-19 epidemic and all of those related issues.

[00:01:52] They are leading the way. They're doing that by providing this next wave of leaders who, in my [00:02:00] opinion, have the potential to be the best generation to tackle the challenges that are facing this world. Now, I am convinced that most of these young emerging leaders are wiser and have more wisdom right now than a majority of people in elected office on all sides of the political spectrum.

[00:02:17] It is encouraging that this is coming to pass because I've always believed that we all have been charged with leaving this world a little better from our being here. One way, my wife, the magnificent dr. Johnson, and I feel that we've left this world a little better is because of our son will. My wife and I have spent many long hours late into the evening.

[00:02:42] And sometimes after will has returned from peacefully protesting, sharing our emotions, including some very painful experiences that will the magnificent dr. Johnson, me and us as a family have experienced over the years. We'll recently [00:03:00] created a very powerful and important post on Instagram. As I read it, I was struck by my son's wisdom, passion and clarity of thought.

[00:03:11] He begins it with a quote from someone else and then adds his own words. And right now I'd like to share it with you. Here's what will says. I'm a black man. I build, I don't tear down other black men. I have felt the pain of being torn down. And I have decided I will be deliberate about building others. I posted this and chose not to tag anyone because I wanted to spread positivity in a different way.

[00:03:41] I want to use this post as a call to action. I challenge everyone reading this to educate. Search a video explaining systematic racism in one of five sectors police brutality, criminal justice. They go hand in hand education, [00:04:00] healthcare legislation, and possibly the most important banking, financial understand.

[00:04:08] Look up and understand your rights and obligations during encounters with police. Repeat possible scenarios in your head to be prepared for these encounters. And when they actually happen, go into them in a calm civilized manner, understand ignorance of a law is no defense, deliberate, have a respectful conversation with someone about racial inequality in America and what it means to them.

[00:04:40] Also call someone out for questionable comments about race and respectively, ask why they feel that way vote. If you are over the age of 18 and haven't registered to vote, I challenge you to do so. No matter which way you lean politically easily [00:05:00] register using the voter pal app, it's easy. And it's your obligation.

[00:05:06] Please share this as you see fit. If one person takes any positive action because of this post, I will consider it a success. Equity, peace and love will always win the day over hate and prejudice. We will change America for the better with unity and solidarity on basic principles of morality and human rights.

[00:05:30] We all need to change to move forward into a future where love and compassion are our guiding principles. And the first step to change is action. Much love will ladies and gentlemen, I love my son with all my heart. My conversation I had with Charlotte music. Legend, big Ivan Ivan hall coming up next on the Jeff Johnson show.

[00:05:57] Stay tuned. Hey everybody. [00:06:00] This is Jeff Johnson with an important message from the CDC about the Corona virus, you know, with the Corona virus, still spreading people at higher risk, they got to take extra precautions. Or if you have any serious underlying medical conditions like chronic lung disease, heart disease, diabetes, or if you're going through cancer treatment, if you're at higher risk, it is essential that you take extra care to protect yourself.

[00:06:30] Stay six feet away from other people. I know it can be tough sometimes better yet. Why don't you just stay at home? You can read, you can listen. You know, it's very important that you take this situation seriously, visit Corona virus.gov for the latest information from the CDC that's Corona virus.gov for the latest information that Jeff Johnson show cares about you and your family.

[00:07:01] [00:07:00] Welcome back everybody. Hey, before we get into our conversation with big Ivan Ivan hall, I just want to say thank you to all the folks that are listening to my podcast. And guess what? We're international. Now year, buddy, we got friends in France and Sweden in Canada. Please share this with your friends and let them know.

[00:07:22] I enjoy talking to them and I hope that they enjoy listening. All right, folks. Here's my conversation with my friend, talented trombone artist, music, teacher, and creator of the big Ivan, big bone, barbecue, and gourmet sauce brand Ivan hall. I'll tell you, ladies and gentlemen, I'm getting ready to talk to my man Ivan hall.

[00:07:43] Ivan's been a friend of mine for years. He is doing some great things, food, music, and everything else. I caught him at a unique moment. He's washing his hands. I've been why'd you trying to wash your hands when you're around food

[00:07:57] Big Ivan: [00:07:57] sanitary,

[00:08:00] [00:08:00] JJ: [00:08:00] how you doing brother?

[00:08:02] Big Ivan: [00:08:02] I'm doing great, man. I, uh, I just got through boiling some jars.

[00:08:07] Yeah, here's something I found out it's really strange. The jars, Mason, jars, whatever. There is a sediment that is built around the jars. I don't know if it's because of the process that they have to go through to be made, but whatever sediment it is, it collects around the edges of the pot that I bought them in after it cools.

[00:08:31] And I was amazed at how much of it was there. So I will tell anybody that if you're getting ready to do anything with candy or pickling, It's a necessity. You have to borrow all those jobs because there are things there that you can't see, but they're there

[00:08:45] JJ: [00:08:45] anyway. Yes, I've. And this is why I love you.

[00:08:48] This is why I love you. And ladies and gentlemen, Ivan is. Ah, the creator of a sauce. That is so good. It makes you want to [00:09:00] slap yo up. I'm gonna stop right there.

[00:09:06] Big Ivan: [00:09:06] It's prime time, baby.

[00:09:08] JJ: [00:09:08] Oh, I'm loving every aspect of it, but Hey listen. Tell folks about. Where we're from, we've known each other since we were kids. And

[00:09:18] Big Ivan: [00:09:18] I think I met you when I was like seven or eight years old. Yep. We're from Charlotte, North Carolina. And, uh, both of us were on a swimming team,

[00:09:30] JJ: [00:09:30] which

[00:09:30] Big Ivan: [00:09:30] was very unusual to have in the black community.

[00:09:34] Right. Since I understand this was not something that was normally done and. Absolutely. We were a major part of something historical that it just hasn't gotten, gotten enough recognition.

[00:09:46] JJ: [00:09:46] That's true. But I saw  Charles Skibo

[00:09:48] Big Ivan: [00:09:48] Harris

[00:09:48] JJ: [00:09:48] our coach, he's the man McCorey Branch YMCA,

[00:09:52] Big Ivan: [00:09:52] yeah, man. He's just talking out to coach us.

[00:09:54] And this was an everyday thing in the summertime man. And we, you know, we'd all hook up and he'll be swimming [00:10:00] all afternoon

[00:10:02] JJ: [00:10:02] early in the morning and listen, we were good. We were, we had some really good swimmers. It was, I really enjoyed it. We were all good. And, but, but it taught us a lot about discipline.

[00:10:12] It taught us a lot about all of those kinds of things. So this folks, we go back this young man and I, and, and I'm just pleased that he is agreed. To be a part of this excursion that I'm on with this podcast by bringing Big Ivans Kitchen  to the Jeff Johnson show because food and our life has been very important to food and music.

[00:10:35] Why is music so important to you and food? All mixed together for the big Ivan big bone?

[00:10:45] Big Ivan: [00:10:45] The thing is, is that music has always been a passion and wound up becoming my life with the school for it. And I'm actually coming into all of these other things later on in life, because I spent most of my time playing with bands and being on tour and [00:11:00] everything.

[00:11:00] JJ: [00:11:00] Right.

[00:11:00] Big Ivan: [00:11:00] But I realized that. That wasn't going to do much for retirement. So I got back in school, got my degree by the grace of God and I've been teaching and I still perform, I don't perform as much because of the teaching aspect. I run a music Academy in the evening and I teach in the school during the day, but I had been all my

[00:11:24] JJ: [00:11:24] friends liked to cook.

[00:11:25] I

[00:11:26] Big Ivan: [00:11:26] mean, come on. The bottom line is young ladies out there. If you have problems with your man, you need that. You need to, I'm going to ask you this right now. This is serious. Okay, man. Does your man like to find the grill? Does your man like to cook or at least attempt to cook? Because if he doesn't then there's another problem going on because the bottom line is real Amir, like to play with fire.

[00:11:49] Are you young ladies? I didn't have sons. You always caught your son playing with matches. All of you've done that real meal at the play with fire. And if you'll manage, trying to find the grill to cook a little [00:12:00] bit. Yes. Something else going on that you're not aware of any case, in any case, all my friends liked to cook and everybody had a specialty, right?

[00:12:09] Yes, sir. Somebody who's cooking really is another guy knows how to cook steak. You guys can buy barbecue. Chicken. You know, I got a buddy all he'd do his wings and ribs. That's all he'll cook. We'll cook anything up. Cause that's his specialty, right? Well, nobody was grilling turkeys. And I decided I wanted to master, grilling the Turkey and I worked on it for a while.

[00:12:30] And a lot of trial and error, the turkeys are really bland meat. So in order to season it properly, I needed something that was going to be a cut above. Now I tried seasoning in it and everybody talks about injecting and all that. Well, no, that's when I'm good, but I started developing my sauce and. It started about 12 years ago, little by little, my friends are going, man, this a good sauce.

[00:12:58] You do some good sauce, man, [00:13:00] man, you need to market the sauce. And I was just happy to my friends liked it. I wasn't thinking about trying to make any money off of it. I really wasn't. And then young lady I was dating got on my case about it. You need to do something with this sauce. You ain't tried to market this.

[00:13:13] So last spring I did a test market. So let me get some gyros and started learning some valuable lessons. Cause jars don't come cheap, started to bottling it and making it. And next thing I know the stuff is selling. So then I did the Facebook page and it has grown exponentially since then. And now.

[00:13:37] Because of the coronavirus pandemic. I don't have a lot to do because schools are closed and I'm having to spend all day, at least for the next five days, making salsa and pickling and uncanny investible. Well, let me just, that's where it came. It came from me just trying to make a sauce. Well,

[00:13:54] JJ: [00:13:54] the Turkey.

[00:13:54] And I'm going to tell you, I mean, of course us being friends to follow you at all time and every time [00:14:00] your Facebook or something would pop up and you're excused and you are, and you're talking about your sauce and I see how you cook it. And my brother, Chile, Tim Johnson, when he calls me right after he's been at your house and eating your food, knowing I'm will be jealous, knowing I'm going to be jealous.

[00:14:24] Big Ivan: [00:14:24] Pam, can

[00:14:29] JJ: [00:14:29] you ladies and gentlemen, my brother, Tim will be on the show sometime, but you'll get to know him throughout this excursion, through the Jeff Johnson show land,

[00:14:38] Big Ivan: [00:14:38] but he's a great guy.

[00:14:40] JJ: [00:14:40] He's wonderful. So I've been, here's the deal. I'm introducing you to all of these folks, but we've got some plans for what we want to try to do.

[00:14:48] One of the big plans that I have, because I want you to share insights and different things with folks and for folks to be able to get in touch with you concerning. Recipes and what you do because [00:15:00] yours is a very unique way and you just decided to do it. And it makes my heart feel good that one of my friends is doing something that is so good and makes everybody happy.

[00:15:09] And that I have not tasted one drop of, but I'm still loving.

[00:15:14] Big Ivan: [00:15:14] We're gonna rectify that,

[00:15:15] JJ: [00:15:15] man.

[00:15:17] Big Ivan: [00:15:17] What's so cool about this whole process, as in our meeting, other people that cook, right. They have certain ways of doing things too. So there's a sharing. And there's a lot of fun and you get the, some of the issues that I may have, they may have a solution for it and vice versa.

[00:15:33] So that's, what's really cool about this whole thing, man. The whole thing is about. Having some fun sharing, some love. Cause come on, Jeff, how we grew up, you come in, you come to my mama's house, we're going in the kitchen

[00:15:48] and it'd be like, that's how they show him love.

[00:15:51] JJ: [00:15:51] But let's say it'd be like two in the afternoon. Go make a plate. Wait a minute. I just might want a little sandwich or just a little piece of the [00:16:00] meat. So you had to go in there and make a whole plate. Everything.

[00:16:04] Big Ivan: [00:16:04] And let me tell you, what was my, my scare you about my house.

[00:16:08] I don't want to scare anybody. Right. My father told me every now and then I get a taste of something. Wow. Cause he was city country, city. Well, Me. And my boy came in the house after playing hard one day and food was on the stove. We made a couple of plates and then the Protestant mr. Hall, my daddy came into the room.

[00:16:26] He said, uh, Mr. Hall, good chicken. But don't say that ain't chicken. I say mental health.

[00:16:34] JJ: [00:16:34] My dad's the same way Charles Johnson. Boy, they will go out in the woods and bring something back,

[00:16:40] Big Ivan: [00:16:40] you know, ask them a question. It was rabbit. Oh,

[00:16:42] JJ: [00:16:42] that's so good. Rabbit is good.

[00:16:45] Big Ivan: [00:16:45] Yeah, it is.

[00:16:45] JJ: [00:16:45] I love rabbit, but most

[00:16:47] Big Ivan: [00:16:47] people, if you haven't been raised on it, man, you're not ready to get rid of the house or square.

[00:16:51] My dog meat. Chicken. Yeah. Oh, squirrel squirrel,

[00:16:54] JJ: [00:16:54] all that kind of stuff. Shooting with 20 twos. I go, we are going to do [00:17:00] things for folks during this. Okay. First off. This is an introduction. So folks, I want you all to be ready because we're going to be bringing more things with big Ivy's kitchen, his talking about his sauce, but right now I want Ivan to let us know how you can get the sauce.

[00:17:19] Big Ivan: [00:17:19] Well, if you go to Facebook, Big Ivan's Big Bone Products.  You can inbox me. You can send me an email at Ivan G Hall One that's Ivan G Hall  and the number at hotmail.com. I will ship it to you. I'm using a cash app. So you pay for it and I'll ship it to you. You will get it in a very timely fashion. And I worked out some logistics, originally shipping kind of scare me because shipping is expensive.

[00:17:54] I had no idea it was that expensive, but I talked to the guy at the post office and I I'm aware of [00:18:00] the flat rate boxes. And he gave me a collection of those. So it's not going to be as expensive as it was the first time I tried to do it. Good. Yeah. Yeah. You can get in touch with me either through Facebook or the email.

[00:18:11] JJ: [00:18:11] Fantastic.

[00:18:12] Big Ivan: [00:18:12] And let's even when I'm going to call you when she wants you to get in touch with me.

[00:18:16] JJ: [00:18:16] So let's see that's and that's a great thing. And he will be on the, get JJ now.com website. I'm going to have some stuff on there as well, links that you can maybe go there a little bit easier, whatever you want to try to do.

[00:18:27] But the operative thing is, I'm just glad we reconnected, man. Cause this is what the show is all about. And this is what. My heart is saying let's have some fun. Let's get man food, dude. Let's play some music. You got to

[00:18:41] Big Ivan: [00:18:41] have some fucking music playing while you're cooking. That's why your food you ain't got no fucking

[00:18:47] JJ: [00:18:47] okay.

[00:18:47] Hold on one sec. What, what do you consider funky music to cook to

[00:18:54] Big Ivan: [00:18:54] man? There's so many it's so many. However, there's something that [00:19:00] a lot of people let slip by them. Bootsy Collins put out an album. When he get a world tour, he put out a new album called worldwide

[00:19:08] JJ: [00:19:08] Funk Drive.

[00:19:09] Big Ivan: [00:19:09] Yeah. Jeff, if you haven't heard it, it's the funkiest thing he's ever done.

[00:19:13] JJ: [00:19:13] And it's amazing. I'm gonna listen to it in just a minute,

[00:19:16] Big Ivan: [00:19:16] man. It's crazy, man. This is going to blow you away. I mean, it's like crazy like that.

[00:19:25] JJ: [00:19:25] Folks will also want to say you will be hearing a lot about music because. Ivan. And I, and a lot of the folks that I know we play a lot of music. Funk is one of our genres.

[00:19:34] That is what we grew up with and we love it. Bootsy James Brown. I mean, you go down the Funkadelic brick slave

[00:19:47] Big Ivan: [00:19:47] man jail. Yeah. The reason why it's big items, big bone saucers, because I'm a trombone player,

[00:19:52] JJ: [00:19:52] he's a trombone player. So now people don't listen. That's what it's about. Bad host,

[00:19:57] Big Ivan: [00:19:57] bad host.

[00:20:01] [00:20:00] JJ: [00:20:01] Then it's almost near the end of this whole thing and I'm just letting people know you're a trombone player counter.

[00:20:06] Big Ivan: [00:20:06] Well, that's okay.

[00:20:06] JJ: [00:20:06] It's all good. Hey, thanks for talking to me. And I'm going to get back with you and we're going to get more stuff out to the people. Remember folks it's big, Ivan's big bone gourmet sauce. Tell him a little bit more about it. Ivan,

[00:20:19] Big Ivan: [00:20:19] big, big, barbecue, and go mate. It's prime time, baby. If you want your kitchen to be right, you're going to need a few jars of big albums, big bowl sauce in the house.

[00:20:32] That's the only way the flavor's going to be popping.

[00:20:37] JJ: [00:20:37] Hey man, I'll talk to you soon.

[00:20:38] Big Ivan: [00:20:38] I'll take care of Jeff.

[00:20:40] JJ: [00:20:40] You know, folks. I love to clear my mind by just sitting quietly. And I know some of y'all were saying rolling your eyes and man, you ain't been quiet since you were born, but yes, even I, the loud and semi talented JJ needs some time to think every day, just to sit and think and ponder [00:21:00] well, here's something to think about.

[00:21:03] Enjoy

[00:21:10] your attitude, determines your altitude. We've all heard that being used in some form or another, but what happens when you let someone else's attitude determine your altitude? You know, what you can't control, how other people live or feel about their day. But the one thing, the one thing that you can control is your own attitude.

[00:21:32] Take great pride in showing off your positive attitude and the difference it makes in your life and the lives of other people every day, having the right attitude and showing it is like wearing a powerful suit of armor it wards off all the negative vibes and the occasional tall Spears. That life and negative attitudes sometimes sling where your shiny, positive attitude proudly, you know what it looks good on you, baby.

[00:21:59] I'm [00:22:00] JJ. Keep on splashing through the puddles of life.
