So on with the show... on this edition of the Jeff Johnson Show, I get to catch up with a long time friend and true Charlotte area media icon. And really just all around. Great guy. Doesn't Lino little you know him? WBTV Football Friday Night, all that stuff. Oh, yeah. People have asked me when they see me on the streets or when I'm back in town or even here where I am, they say, Hey, man, you remember Delano Little? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. And they go. What happened to him?
spk_0: 2:26
Well, guess what. We get ready. Talk a little bit about it, because don't worry. Delano still is doing his thing and doing it in a big way in Charlotte, North Carolina. And he's here with me now on the Jeff Johnson Show. Delano man, it is always great to talk to you. And how you doing?
spk_1: 2:46
Pretty good, man. I'm doing. I'm doing pretty good. Yeah, just hanging in there, taking things day by day, if you will. Right? That all you can do
spk_0: 2:56
Look, D at this time in our lives, everything that we've been doing, everything that we've been through, you are blessed to be able to take every day, one day at a time, and I'm glad that you're doing well. Man, I've been keeping up. You know, I keep up with my hometown now Onley different things that are going on up there. And I've been hearing such great things about what you're doing, not only in the music business with the new nightclub, but with the restaurant business and all of those things. So let's start back. Let's go back a little bit. Right? Okay, because you went to Georgia Southern, right?
spk_1: 3:31
I went to Georgia, said the university. I was there from 1982 to 86 was fortunate enough to win two national championships, Division one, Double A in football at the time. I played wide receiver there for all those years, and it was it was a great ride and really a stepping stone to my career.
spk_0: 3:49
Oh, no doubt about it. But, you know, I wouldn't even go in there because you know where I went to Appalachian State. I just want to let you knew that, right?
spk_1: 3:55
Hey, look, you know what I mean. Obviously, I think What do you talk like? Come on, I gotta hear from my alma mater. But like Apple after state, because being here in Charlotte for so many years as a sportscaster during a high school football show, I got to see a lot of the athletes shoot actually ended up. Yes, sir. And making demonstrate special programming. It's arguable to say that they're probably not much more successful program right now. Then George's something is that was in the past. So they're both in the Sun Belt conference now, But Appalachian State is really doing very, very well that finished ranked last year. You gotta love that.
spk_0: 4:36
We'll listen. The one thing I remember, just the sheer rivalry between those two schools. I don't care where you went with if you came down to Statesboro or if you came up the boom, it was on hold with some great games.
spk_1: 4:51
Nobody really liked going. Boom.
spk_0: 4:55
Come on, now
spk_1: 4:56
hold. It's getting late in the year. Of course, that's just not That's not conducive. The triple option Football. I mean, it just isn't no, no. They know that at National State knows that. Good gracious. What a great rivalry. You would be correct. Yes, both teams get together. It doesn't matter what else is going on in the season. It's all about beating Appalachian State or all of George's up just waiting.
spk_0: 5:18
There you go. And you know what? That competition, that sort of thing has followed you all your life. And I just think that that is fantastic. And, you know, let's talk a little bit about your career there. I mean, here you are your high level athlete down at Georgia Southern, and you got started in television in Savannah to were you interested in trying to becoming an NFL player? Or what's television, radio, that first thing you wanted to do?
spk_1: 5:47
I can, I can tell you, uh, try to make this as short as possible. First of all, a high level. Thank you for saying that. It's very nice.
spk_0: 5:55
Oh, come on, now you come on, dude.
spk_1: 5:58
But But, uh, yes, I was interested in playing in the NFL. My, um, head coach at the time God rest his soul, uh, got me a private try out with the Atlanta Falcons right after I graduated. And unfortunately, I did not have the best try out in the world at, I got sick about 10 minutes in, uh, and my brother had come down.
spk_1: 6:19
with his brother, come down just to drive with me, and we drove up to Atlanta from, Ah, Warner Robins, Georgia, which is where my parents resided at the time they were from nearby period, Georgia, but my father was 20 years military retired, so we've got all over, but they come back home. So I drove up from Warner Robins that day. Ah did not have the best try out at the same time. The same day I got an offer from a TV station in Savannah, Georgia, to come and be somebody behind the scenes. And I was just fresh out of college, and it was a decision when I went to continue to try to go back and try to figure out other places to play me because I thought I was good enough to play. But then again, there's a balance that you have to make a decision in your life. Everybody has to come to some type of decision. And that decision was I thought, I better take that television job. Ah, and start my career in television. That's what happened in and 32 years later. Here I am trying North Carolina because of that decision. So
spk_1: 0:00
spk_0: 7:21
we're not just not just in Charlotte, North Carolina. Delano. You were you our beloved in Charlotte, North Carolina. What's so special about Charlotte that you you blossomed and you came out like you did?
spk_1: 7:37
I loved the aspect of sports and what I was able to do for 30 years there a wbtv. But the one thing that that's always glared out from people and what they talked about even today when I walk out in the streets on more visible now because, you know, back then I was in the studio a lot get. But now I'm like, with a restaurant up right here in the middle of uptown and walking the streets, or whatever the case may be, actually see more people, and I I get more comments from, or people still remember me and say just the resounding thing that I getting them. It's football Friday night, and it's amazing that show that lasted basically 32 years and I picked it up in your year seven on, and I carried it from your seven tiptoe 32 before I retired. It's amazing how many people were touched by that show and because of the high school athletes, not only the high school athletes but also the band members. The cheerleaders who considered feels athletes as well. I think the parents that got a chance to see their kids, they called out on a Friday night. Yes, it was an event, I mean, for many, many years of them football. Friday night wasn't event. Now everything changes, you know, and you got into social media in the last several years and, uh, things that you could you can tape and playback or whatever the case may be. So it waned in his popularity as far as people having to watch it and tour down what people thought was important and not important as far as news directors were concerned. So it's not there anymore at that particular station, but that's what made me is popular. I waas.
spk_0: 9:24
I've seen the results off your shows, especially Friday night, because you were so right. So many people love that show, and it was a great show. But, you know, you made that because your personality, your professionalism and all those things and and that drives me, too, to think. Did you think that you could do this kind of thing in Charlotte, North Carolina, for so long?
spk_1: 9:48
What? Nobody. Nobody knew. Um, how big that show, What becoming and started. Let me let me just say I was I was the face of it, uh, for so many years with a lot of other different, uh, characters that came alone and they were the face to for the time that they were there, I just happened to be the loneliest face on the show ever like. But there was so many people, outstanding cast of characters that came through it, made it great and made it greater. And Paul Cameron Ah, longtime banker BTP actually hired me naked night being 89 when I first came here to Charlotte C. And I developed a relationship together. At the time, he and Charlie Frederick were the originators of the show. Terry Mooney was professional. Golfer had show.
spk_0: 10:44
Remember what a wonderful group of guys to hang around with? No, Only just sports guys but people.
spk_1: 10:52
And I learned from them. I mean, I got it, and I learned the passion they had immediately for the show. And the show just took on a, um feel of its own as it continued to grow. And then we went from 30 minute show to an hour long show. You know, it was a labour of love. I mean, it was something you did that you loved. And all the different co anchors that came along where there was cricket. Morton John Roberts. Wow, actually, Stroh line. Yep. Way had a number of great at these Danielle trotting. Now Daniel bitten, working at a TV station and in Boston. Ask you, Cheryl, I'm still doing well in sports. I've had many interns were coming through there still doing well in sports. I feel like it's my sports family, and I love to see them to Latin. They blossoms. You know, that's important to me. And a lot of that all stem. I wonder that you have lost great sports reporters throughout the country. One thing Is that the dynamic? They all came through football Friday.
spk_0: 11:56
Incredible. Incredible. You know, I gotta ask you this, and I'm sure that people have talked to you about this. You know, sports is a huge deal to all of us, especially you, because that's how you made a lot of your money and a lot of your fun in a lot of years. But sports in general, from your perspective, as an expert in this in the age of Corona virus, we got the Hornets. We got the Panthers, we got the nights. How is all this effect? The QC
spk_1: 12:26
We have determined television broadcasting. I think the term still stands and it which was breaking news. And people always say a lot of moving parts. A lot of moving parts of this story will continue to follow it for you. That's what I kind of feel like. This year is just so many moving parts, as far as you know, the diagnosis of it, the prognosis of how to try to fix it, testing house that's going to get done. How many people are so obvious that people are ready to get back to work and
spk_0: 12:58
Oh, yeah,
spk_1: 12:59
with everything they're doing. So I'm not sure how difficult it will be to get the economy going again because people are so ready to get back out. You know, it's just up to the individual. Businesses should do their best part as far as making sure that people feel safe. And when they come in through that restaurant or that particular business that they feel like they're still social, distancing enough and still having the proper sanitation and things, that nature, that testing, I think that all plays a major part in it. If you could get that system set up with time, I think everything will kind of go away. But it's it's it's a difficult situation.
spk_0: 13:37
I hurt so bad for so many young athletes who are not gonna be able to do what they do because of this. I mean, I've got friends right now at different schools all across the country. You know, baseball players, football players, volleyball players who this was it for them for their senior year. They don't know if I'm gonna get drafted. I mean, what's your thoughts on how it affects the psyche of the parents, the kids, all these things and where it's going to go with that.
spk_1: 14:04
It's mind boggling to think, because you for you and I to go back and think in back in 1980. You graduated high school in 1981. Correct?
spk_0: 14:13
Graduated Appalachian 17 81.
spk_1: 14:16
It crashed in the Appalachian 81. Wow, you're way ahead of meat in that, You
spk_0: 14:20
dude, man, you know, look,
spk_1: 14:22
Feeling high school in 80. What are you talking about? You
spk_0: 14:26
know, I try to keep it all along Onley up. Enough. You know, I try to put you have
spk_1: 14:30
held up well, my friend. You you
spk_0: 14:33
You're my man. That's why I love you so much.
spk_1: 14:36
You know, I've followed your career to you. Yes, sir. Thank you. I've always always proud to watch and see what you did in the whole situation. Because you have that initial person. I think what? Those initial people They came to Charlotte who just happen to be a person of color and gave people something to look up to. You always have such a pleasant personality. And I just think that means the world to a lot of people. Young kids were out there trying to see where they can go in their life. You have those positive role models with differences in backgrounds.
spk_0: 15:07
Thank you, brother. I really appreciate that. And I'll send you your $10 after this is over.
spk_1: 15:12
I need money.
spk_0: 15:15
But that's why I love these kind of interviews because that leaves me right into the next stuff. You. Are you out there now, man? Now that you're not working in television and media anymore, you are a restauranteur. You are a club owner. How is all this affecting you?
spk_1: 15:30
I always try to stay as positive as possible. I just think it's I just don't think there's really reasoning, trying to be negative. It only brings you down, so I try to stay as positive as possible. Week have been working on this project for about two years now,
spk_0: 15:44
Delano, tell him a little bit about what we're talking about because I didn't even set that up and see how bad is out of me as a media person. You got
spk_1: 15:52
it. Okay. Okay. A nightclub way. We got together at my business partner, and I we were looking for a place toe move the restaurant that we'd have to 3.5 years where I did not have as much activity in. I was more just have been investor. It was in Ah, no doubt part of town, right? Sure. No. No. Yes. You don't know? It's full of the ah, eclectic part of town where it's more arty. Great area, great people over there.
spk_0: 16:23
Wonderful area. But hold on. That's the area where the guarantor Wildcats live, baby. Yes, you. I'm again along Cat man. That's why I went to school on school. Gave her high guarantee. Your high me, Dwight Clark.
spk_1: 16:37
You know, Terry moving, very moving.
spk_0: 16:38
And that's how I know Terry and autos
spk_1: 16:40
Dio. Yeah,
spk_0: 16:44
it's not milk, but But I'm sorry I broke in and go
spk_1: 16:47
here. You know, you and back you shot out your father do get the opportunity Or else Yes, somebody was here and somebody will call you. I don't know how you making guarantee jostling. You didn't say. Well,
spk_0: 16:57
that's right. That's my set. But you were talking about your you were talking about the restaurant, a nightclub, and what's going on with
spk_1: 17:05
it? Yeah. Yeah. So basically, towards the end of my career, I started to realize that I couldn't do this forever on. There's so much things that I had already done. I've been right several Super Bowls. I've been the Final Fours for a sportscaster and I was not looking to go try to go national. Not so that I could say that I would have gone national, that anybody was wanting to go national. But that wasn't in my That wasn't my thought because I love Charlotte. I wanted to stay here in Charlotte, so I started looking other alternatives and I got involved with a restaurant and it was 3.5 years over in the note I district and we needed to move. And so we started actively looking for a place. A long story short. We met some other people that we're also looking at a building, uh, of the lower the lower floors of a building here, right here on provide street MLK right across. Your NASCAR are playing two blocks away from the Spectrum centre, right across from the convention center. So we're right here in the heart of everything. Right? And the building were looking for two tenants in two separate sides of the building and so we formed Ah, Bond and a relationship and contract that we were doing food and beverage. I restaurant with your food and beverage for the Jazz club Graham, and it's run by a guy named Larry Farber. Who was, I know Larry. Yeah, he was the founder of the East Coast Entertainment Ready Retire. So he wanted to do something and leave a legacy because jazz had not been prevalent here or the feel of a club like that, right? So we put together a great club and we started November 2nd of last year, and we were selling out and doing well. We're breaking records. And then we hit the Kobe 19. Yeah, right now it's shut down. But there, looking to reopen on you don't follow the basic guidelines from the governor as far as trying to get it reopened, but on. We will now because we have not opened on our side. Get the restaurant, which took a little bit longer because there was no basis of a restaurant here. We had to build everything out. We were very close to opening right before Kobe, 19 to, so we'll be able to pretty much open together once the restrictions were lifted and try to move back in together. So our thought was always that, you know, even though we do food and beverage over there, the jazz club as well that we have a nice 1,000,000 over there. Some people may want to come over here and sit down right meal in the restaurant and then walk across the hall. We're joined by alway coming. Always walk right across the hallway and over there, grab a drink. True over there in the first international and music of the night. So that's that's That's what I plan was and still is, and we're very excited about it. We just had a meeting the other day and to talk about how we can work together and make sure that we get this going to get
spk_0: 19:45
Oh, it's gonna happen. It's gonna happen, no doubt about it. So, you know, a good friend of mine Then, too. She's probably a good friend of yours. I was so glad when you decided to do middle C and you guys got that up and going. But Maria Howl is Oh, yeah, really great friend. You know, she just a wonderful woman, and that gets Maria in the door. I mean, you got it going on, baby doll.
spk_1: 20:09
Yes, she spent She's fan. Fantastic. Her and, uh, no, a free line. Who was? They were our first act on November 2nd that came through that Saturday and over in a second, and they came through and they sold the place out. Oh, yeah, and fantastic. They've been back for ah, album released Christmas. They getting private party for that? They have also been back for a Stevie Wonder tribute in the early part of February. They did three shows, and they sold out all three of those shows. They have now been doing Facebook lives for us. Since the epidemic kind of got into full swing. Great art in the end of March, they've been doing live Facebook stream every Wednesday.
spk_0: 20:48
Okay, good. I'm glad you said that every Wednesday, Huh?
spk_1: 20:51
Every Wednesday given back to the fans they have been doing. And I think there were getting ready to start doing some or they treated toe nose house in his garage, introducing markers. What? They were doing requests every Wednesday for about an hour from 7 to 8 s o. They get like, five shows, and they're ready to get back in and start doing some taping some Facebook live in and some pay per view from the actual jazz club. I think that starts tomorrow. So how they've been a big part of us, Maria and No. And Maria, as you say it is probably one of the eso is No. Two of the nicest people
spk_0: 21:26
in the world,
spk_1: 21:27
so talented, just amazing the Taligent and to speak on Jonathan Jonathan's jazz cellar. For people that don't know Charlotte was, there's only been really one successful jazz club in stride. And that was Jonathan's. That's correct, which was, like in the early 80 99 and Burke Gilman, Jonathan Jonathan's father, he named it after his son, Jonathan Gilman, who was helping him run the joint birth, decided to show the place. So that's how they ended. It wasn't because it wasn't doing well. It was just a situation where he sold the building. So basically, Larry, when he restarted and they say that I'm gonna open a jazz club, do it right, I'm gonna make it big here in strategy where people can go. He called Jonathan and said, We want you out of retirement. So Jennifer Gilman is actually running out of using over there at middle C Jazz across the home. So really, it all came full circle and we're all back together.
spk_0: 22:24
I'm sitting. I'm getting chills here and you say that because people just don't understand. I mean, you guys have resurrected the this unique thing that Charlotte had going forward, especially in the jazz world. How is the music world going in Charlotte now? In your opinion,
spk_1: 22:41
Charlotte's music world has has failed over the years compared to certain cities like Austin, Texas. You're crazy. Music City, Nashville, Of course. Atlanta, Georgia s Oh, there's a citywide thing to make Charlotte a city that has music everywhere. So that's the plan of the government. So we're just fit into that little small piece of trying to do that as faras get our attention and help the other people. So we got a lot of local artists that are here. They're fantastic artist order from Charlotte, and they have now a place where they can play time in the Jazz Club. I will fade because I watched it from just him dealing with Larry and out of his son, who were the co owners. I'm an investor in the Jazz Club as well, so I have a stake in their right, just not only doing food and beverage. I restaurant for them. I have an investment in their Just see what they did over there. The audio that they have over there is top notch and artists that come national artists. Steve Carell, who was here right there before the pandemic, was like, This is some of the best audio I've dealt with. We're talking about somebody who played with Deed and Frank and things. Guy comes with all these stories, and he's excited already plans to come back at the beginning of next year because he liked it so much they done done well. I take the example of the Wells Fargo championship here because of some of the golf people here. Johnny Hairs, who runs Wells Fargo Championship. All the people out there, Lee Patterson has been the PR director for many, many years. When I used to work in sports and deal with them, they came in with the idea that we're going to make this tournament one of the best in the world. that way, everybody will want to come to play. Including the deaths. Like Tiger Woods has been here several times. Yes, plate Because they treat the caddies better than any other place on the planet, right? You know, if you're gonna get to the golfers, make sure those Candies get treated well, and I guarantee you those candles and make sure they're golfers come to this tournament. Oh, yeah. Bring the little things that makes people want to come back. And what we have to do is over the jazz clubs to make sure that artists and national artists here about the jazz Club in, say, have you been through the jazz Club in trial it yet, right. Really? Right. And you're doing it right. They're treating us with respect. And in doing this and that, that's what way I feel like we that to this point. And I feel like we can continue to do that as we move forward.
spk_0: 25:10
Well, I'm There is no doubt in my mind that that is going to be what's gonna happen because you've already set your mind to it. Do you know at a certain point here you made this place your home. Why, You know, other than what you've told me before, you've had some incredible memories of this place. I mean, I remember walking around over there in the studios when you know I'd be over there. It's sunny FM. Remember, Sonny FM? Yeah. I work over there than seeing you guys in the halls everywhere. I mean, what memories do you have that are some of your fondest that you can just share with us?
spk_1: 25:49
Uh, she's I
spk_0: 25:50
mean, there's so many I know. That's a tough question.
spk_1: 25:54
There's they're still in the late nights, I once again, I started bow down to football Friday night. Just one night. Turned around in there trying to get the show on, going on the set with the countdown going to 54321 And you don't have your 1st 3 scripts of the night.
spk_0: 26:09
You, sir, been there, done that
spk_1: 26:11
man way. You
spk_0: 26:17
better start talking.
spk_1: 26:19
Having an additive over. Yeah, we gotta figure out. You know, you know, some of some of the things you do know because there are more popular than other right there on the better team. So some of those memories certainly stick out Yeah, just the memories of being with my comrades and people that you work with on a daily basis through a lot of Osugi and some more major stories in your area and tragedies. It just brings everybody together as the station, cause you want to do the best you can for the community. Did you want to be there for them? Sure. You know, I had so many memories that just just the ones ah, being able to go to a Super Bowl and sit their final four, just just electrifying to be able to do that. So I've lived a good life. If you know, if I tossed with market would be a good life for what I was able to live. I'm going to see and do and travel the United States and have good people around me. And that's what it's all about. In the end. It's about the people that are around you because at some point all that goes away and at the end, it's about your family and about people that care about

100%. Thanks, man. While what a great interview with Delano. What a great guy. I cannot wait to get back to the QC, have some wonderful food, this restaurant, walking right over and check out the jazz. It's gonna be great. Have to let you know what? I'm gonna be there so you can join me now. Here's something to think about, You know, life could be great when you simply go with it instead of really you know, all that excessive worrying and endless analyzing. Just make your choice and then move on with it. You know, your first instinct is often your best one because it comes from your authentic self. Trying to make the perfect decision can often lead to no decision at all. And let me tell you, I've done it many times before myself. Trying to avoid every mistake could be the biggest mistake you could make, because you also avoid getting anything done. So go ahead with the best you have, you will be completely able to deal with whatever may happen, and you'll have a smile on your face to go with it. Thanks for listening.
