Wedding Planning and Rental Services
Megan RallisWelcome to Metropolitan Weddings. I'm Meg, I'm Dawn, and we are here to educate couples with information from wedding professionals in the industry.
Dawn WilliamsOur goal is to make the wedding planning process as seamless as possible by providing you with insight from industry professionals.
Megan RallisOkay, couples, let's get this party started For our listeners today. Kayla, please introduce yourself and your business.
Kayla SheetsMy name is Kayla Sheets and I'm the owner of Signature Event Rentals and Coordinating which is pretty self-explanatory. You have you have person.
Megan RallisYou have person.
Adam WilliamsYou have business name. I mean, yeah, I mean that's pretty self-explanatory.
Megan RallisI was saying the business name.
Kayla SheetsI have event rentals and I also coordinate.
Adam WilliamsThere you go.
Megan RallisShe nailed it with that name.
Adam WilliamsShe's also a person.
Kayla SheetsThat helps me with the name.
Megan RallisOh shoot. So, Kayla, what type of rental items? If you were to describe your vast warehouse of rental items, how would you do that?
Kayla SheetsLike I pretty much have everything from linen to centerpieces, tabletop, any of your service wear cake stand campaign wall, flower, wall backdrops, statement pieces like furniture-wise, not like bulk tables.
Megan RallisOh, okay. So there's one thing you don't have, but everything else you do.
Kayla SheetsYes, yes, not bulk.
Megan RallisNot bulk tables and chairs.
Kayla SheetsYes, I get a lot of calls about it, though I probably should have said that.
Megan RallisYou like. By the time this airs, I will also have bulk tables and chairs.
Adam WilliamsNo, Allegedly, allegedly.
Megan RallisOkay. So why don't okay? So you've got linens, flatware, glassware centerpieces. I want you to describe what's a flower wall.
Kayla SheetsIt is a wall that has flowers on it that you would put behind like a head table or use for a photo booth.
Megan RallisOkay, I got you, so it's another backdrop, but it's like specifically 3D flower. Yes, perfect. And I know that you have created the cutest champagne walls. You have two of them now.
Kayla SheetsYes, two is better than one.
Megan RallisWell, people have lots of guests, lots of champagne is flowing.
Kayla SheetsYes, so you can always do one if you have a smaller, more intimate wedding, or you could add one next to it, side by side, if you're needing more.
Megan RallisAnd I love it that you're. Did you talk to your husband and make that for you?
Kayla SheetsNo, I actually hired someone. You did. My husband was on a plane at no, get the hired number.
Megan RallisWell, I love it that you were like I want one of these and I'm going to have it made. You're kind of a go getter that way. Yes, how did you end up in the rental business to begin with?
Kayla SheetsWell, really I started with I just kind of did some friends parties, like birthday parties and such for family and friends, and I just like, enjoyed, like planning them and pretty much doing them. My son's birthday, first birthday, was kind of a over the top for a first birthday and a second and a third, but I don't know when to stop.
Megan RallisYou won't stop.
Kayla SheetsI actually rented from the first owners whenever it was vintage country event rentals for my own wedding. And then my best friend was getting married and the second owner of vintage country and Web City had purchased it and so we went to their place and then it wasn't even a week later that me and my best friend had went for rent for her wedding, that they had posted it for sale. So kind of just felt like a meant to be kind of thing. So, I feel like that happens.
Megan RallisYeah, sometimes when people are like so super excited about I don't know an aspect of doing something in their own life like Don got started photography, taking a picture of her kids it's like you got started planning and doing all this stuff like through wanting to do it for your kid and you were like I want to do more of it Full time.
Kayla SheetsYeah, how long have you been doing it? So in September it'll be two years of owning.
Megan RallisWow. Signature event that's awesome and you have grown so much since I've, like I've watched you just buy a by a business, but you have transformed that business. You have taken it to whole new levels. I love your taste level and your I don't know yeah, your ideas of color.
Kayla SheetsOriginally as vintage country and then decided to change the name, since I'm not, when I consider myself vintage, getting up there but not quite yet, Not quite yet. And although I have raised cows and I have live in a bar, live on a farm, I'm not very country, so the name was not very fitting for me. So you are like the best in both worlds.
Megan RallisSo you so a little bit of background. Give them your background on your high school years.
Kayla SheetsSo in high school I showed my school livestock. So I traveled the United States with show seers and one all over the place with the state fair and sold calves that would compete at national levels. And Then my dad also raises show steers now.
Megan RallisI love that about you. If someone were to meet you now and then just try and guess what. What do you think Kyla was like in high school?
Adam WilliamsI would have never guessed.
Kayla SheetsNo, yeah, I love people, don't it most people down, but I was also a cheerleader and I would. You would probably have guessed that that checks out, yeah. Yeah. So yes, we. I don't even know really how we got started in the whole thing, because my dad had a friend that did it and I just fell in love with it. I think it was the competition side of it. I'm very competitive. Everything is a race, so that is embedded in my child.
Megan RallisNow, unfortunately, he's gonna keep you young. You won't be?
Kayla SheetsYeah, he definitely does.
Megan RallisSo I All of that like when you meet Kayla, you will understand. But your your taste level and your your taste level and your your like Exquisite, nice things that you surround yourself with and all of the beautiful colors and fun things like that, but you're still very down to earth, lots of fun to be around. So I can only imagine that coordinating became like second In line to the rental company, very easy for you to get along with the couples and help them with all of these things that you're good at and you know in party planning and thinking things through from beginning to end. So what was the progression there?
Kayla SheetsHonestly, whenever I started I thought that maybe I would want to dabble in the planning to, but sometimes I I I think that I can do everything whenever in reality I can't, and Although I'd like to try, I had to kind of Take down some of my services that I was gonna offer, but I really enjoyed the coordinating. I like being there, seeing it all happen and come together. I like to actually, especially with like my own Product. I'd like to be able to set it up and, you know, make sure it's perfect for that day. I like I like being in charge. So that's very something that it comes naturally to me, that I like to. I Like the aspect of being able to make sure everything is perfect and I feel like it's just like kind of my personality and.
Kayla SheetsSo coordinating is very just very natural for me. I I Like like a timeline and like I like being making sure everything's supposed to go how it is like, even on a family trip or a girl's trip. I have everything planned down to the T. I know how many minutes it takes us to get from the airport to the hotel. I know how many minutes it takes us to get to the hotel to the dinner, so that we're not late.
Adam WilliamsDon? Are you getting anxiety?
Kayla SheetsI know how many times we have to go change that day and how long it will take us.
Adam WilliamsOh, my god, you are. You are Don's nightmare. I mean, this is a nightmare fuel for her. I'm like we got to go come on, let's go. And she's like I gotta do a couple more things, like we needed to leave 10 minutes ago. Come on, let's go.
Dawn WilliamsIt's more like you need to pack and I'm like I'll pack before I leave. 15 minutes before I leave, I'll pack. I have a feeling you pack way in advance, don't you?
Kayla SheetsYeah, well, sometimes it's like my best friend is the worst. I'm like trying to spring like last minute things and then so I have to have to buy out this, you know. So like I might not pack fully in advance, but I know exactly what I'm wearing, to which location, what shoes and accessories. Down to that, I'll make a vision board for it.
Megan RallisThere's no air.
Dawn WilliamsSee, I need. I need a Kayla in my life. I like every single day oh my gosh, I you might actually be on track, I might be on track and I might actually like put together this is what this explains why every time we show up on one of our styled shoots with Kayla, she looks like she walked out of a magazine. I know I like a fashion model out of a magazine.
Kayla SheetsI.
Dawn WilliamsDo every single time. The first time we met you, we were like whoa, look at our. That is Amazing. And then you're, like you know, picking up tables and chairs, and you're like the most well dressed.
Adam WilliamsOh my god. The one thing I can say about you, kayla, is you are a hustler. Like things are set up. I remember at one point and I love your sense of humor I was like, do you need help with that? You're like, why? Like that's awesome, I love that.
Kayla SheetsThat is like one thing. Is that, like Because of just like my personality, like on having help, like you can set it down but I will go back and redo it because it probably won't be done right Like that force just needs to barely move and I don't mean it as an insult, it's just like people just don't do it the way that I want it and so I have to for war people like. If you want to help, that's fine, but I you can get.
Discussing Costume Changes and Social Media
Megan RallisYou might as well you can get it to the area, but just know I will be tweaking. You are in the perfect profession you really are you really are, because that's what as a, as a couple, they don't want to have to worry about where the forks at. They want it, but they want it in those pictures to have been perfect. So that's where you come in. I want to just circle back to. Did you hear her say all the change, like the outfits and the changes, how long it will take to change throughout?
Dawn Williamsthe day I. I actually want us to go on a girls trip with Kayla, just for this reason. Can't keep up. Can we just follow Kayla and her friends around and we'll sit back at a bar, see, and just like watch in a basement. Oh, I did online. I watched the whole thing.
Megan RallisSo what is the? What is the perfect amount of costume changes for in a day for a trip?
Kayla SheetsOh, like you don't want to wear the same outfit because you are going to be taking photos. Like you don't want people to see you in that outfit at three different places. Like you can use these photos now to post on Instagram, for I mean forever, if you don't change your hair color. Smart, I have photos still that I haven't used from whenever I was blonde and I'm like I can't do it now because, like, I'm not blonde, but once I go, if I go back blonde, I can reuse them, oh Like that is so funny, that is funny, so are they just dead to you?
Megan RallisYou can't use these photos now.
Kayla SheetsWell, I mean, they're still in my, they're still in my folder. She might go blind again. I had to get a new phone and it took forever to switch over. I told the guy. I said I think it's because I have like 13,000 photos on my phone. And he's like oh yeah, that's definitely. It Turns out I had 33,000. Oh my God, not 13, 33. And so I was like oh, oh, that's definitely it. I was a little off for how many photos I have.
Adam WilliamsYeah, but I think there's almost an excuse for that many photos because you're so efficient. You're preparing for future efficiency, it's true.
Kayla SheetsYes.
Adam WilliamsShe's preloading.
Kayla SheetsShe's preloading and like screenshots and like just wedding photos. I just have it all saved, ready to post if I ever remember to post it. That's where I need help, because on social media I just I have all this stuff to post but I forget because I get too busy doing stuff.
Megan RallisWell, your clients do appreciate you're there, like them taking precedence. You're like just too busy I have to.
Kayla SheetsThat's awesome. I need someone to just wrap my social media for me my personal as well.
Adam WilliamsDon't we all?
Megan RallisYeah, you don't have 33,000 pictures of you in different outfits.
Adam WilliamsMaybe I do, and the issue is I don't have someone to run my social media.
Megan RallisYou would have to worry about hair change Ever.
Kayla SheetsIt's true, but what if I?
Dawn Williamshad change for him.
Adam WilliamsBut I mean how? But what if I want to grow my hair out?
Megan RallisOh, I can't look. Yes, let's do it. Let's see what that looks like.
Adam WilliamsHe started doing. Oh, he started doing it during COVID.
Dawn WilliamsIt was not, it was.
Adam WilliamsIt was offensive, is it?
Dawn Williamsa no go.
Adam WilliamsIt was, it was terrible.
Dawn WilliamsOh my gosh yeah.
Megan RallisSo all of this create like I think your knack for, like I mean, you've just I don't know, I don't know what I'm trying to say here is basically like the fact that you love all of these costume changes and you want to take a day trip and turn it into like this event and all of these things just speak to how easy it is for you to come up with ideas for table scapes and backdrops and all of these things, because you're constantly flowing with these ideas. You love change. You love putting something together and then striking that and putting it together a new one. I see that in your work all the time. Every time we have like a photo shoot or something for the magazine, you you're always on point. All of your stuff is exciting to look at and fun and you've thought through all the details.
Megan RallisYou usually every time way over prepare, which we love about you, so yeah, I'd rather be over prepared than under for sure. Back to Adam. You're saying you're a hustler, you do.
Adam WilliamsI know You've busted a lot, it seems like a lot of people in the industry, especially with like decor and the event planning and everything. It's like you have dreamers and you have doers and she's like a dreamer and a doer together. So that's such a great combination because logistics is really important and if you're not a naturally organized person, then how are your logistics going to be on point? So she's logistical in her regular life, not just in her professional life.
Dawn WilliamsAnd then there are some of us who are neither, so we have a Meg.
Kayla SheetsI have a Meg for work life. Well, it's really hard to balance everything.
Dawn WilliamsWell, you do a good job of it.
Kayla SheetsYou have to sometimes get someone in there to help my grandmother right now. She helped, she helped me do inventory, so finally counting all 400 of each color and pattern texture of napkins. So wow, what a sweet grandma Got to count them once and then I tell her to do it again.
Dawn WilliamsGets to count grandma.
Kayla SheetsWell, you just never know, it's easy to miss one. I love you. I'm 396 napkins and I actually only have 395. That's a nightmare.
Megan RallisIt kind of could be, though I don't want to be the couple that rented 395 and you only had 394, but Granny counted wrong.
Kayla SheetsYeah, you can share, that's right.
Megan RallisSo grandma's not the only family member you have around the business.
Kayla SheetsWho else. All of my family kind of helps out a lot. In it I have my mother-in-law, who's been a big help until she broke both her ribs. That kind of slowed her down a little bit on the helping. But actually at a wedding helping me and Phil and ended up breaking both ribs. But she is a huge help. Now that she is pretty much fully recovered she is back helping and my mother also helped me and my grandmother she does help me as well.
Dawn WilliamsThat's awesome. Yeah, that's really cool.
Megan RallisI think it also speaks to you that your family will jump in and help you. Like that. That's good.
Kayla SheetsOh yeah, it is. It's really nice. I appreciate them a lot.
Dawn WilliamsI think it's those organizational skills. They aren't going to tell you no, they don't have a choice.
Megan RallisYeah, yeah, exactly, she gives them their schedule at Thanksgiving.
Kayla SheetsHere's your schedule for the next year. They know how I am, so they just don't take it personal. Whatever you know I love them. They just know. So it's easy. I'm kind of scared to have someone that I have hire on one day, because I'm sure it will happen.
Megan RallisYeah, I can't believe you haven't yet. So, yeah, that's what I'm thankful for family, they come through, they do. So, if you were to try and describe your favorite part of the process, or your job, I don't know.
Kayla SheetsI kind of like it all, so it's really hard to like. I feel like that's where I battle with, like you know, like picking things that I, whatever I was trying to decide, what I couldn't, can't do, although I do love planning and stuff, it is a very timely like process where it's a lot more than just being able to coordinate to where I just have to do a month worth of and I can still be there and make the timeline, get with offenders and make sure everything's going correctly.
Kayla SheetsI do love the planning aspect of it, but I know I just couldn't do it all. So I'd say like my favorite part is probably whenever they actually come in and start showing me like and the first consultation and we can like actually go through their vision and kind of see you know what they're actually, you know what their vision board looks like, you know, and being able to show them what I have and piece together things and even sometimes even things that they might not even know, that they may have liked that I'm like here, let me try this really quick and I can really like use my imagination and like help them bring it together where we actually set it up on a box table so that they can actually see, because some people aren't like that. They're like visually see it in order to know like agree if it's what I want, yeah yeah
Adam Williamsso what's the best way for them to approach you? Is it for them to have a vision board, for them to have a Pinterest page, for them to give you just a color palette or scheme?
Kayla SheetsI feel like if they have a Pinterest board, I can, I can go from there like if they just have some pins pinned on what they kind of think that they like, that's the best. I feel like everyone has a Pinterest board, although I have had a few people that don't um with ideas and that kind of just gives me I can pretty much figure out their whole vibe by their Pinterest board and you know what all you have.
Megan RallisSo it's easy for you to look at their vibe and be like here's what I have that I can plug in in color and style and quantity yeah boom done. How long does that usually take? How long is a consultation?
Adam Williamsmy concentrations are an hour and a half, hour and a half okay, sounds like a lot, but I mean when you're basically starting from scratch yeah there's a lot to go through, I'm sure yeah, we do.
Kayla SheetsWe go through everything. We go through the ceremony, uh, the spot. So what you want to do at the arbor if you have, they have an arbor. If they don't have an arbor, the florals, the trapping, the aisle, centerpieces for the ceremony spot. We go through how many guest tables, what the venue has, brown circles if you want to incorporate bowls, just one. The bridal party tables, the head table we use a four-year. So guest book tables, the tables, food tables, how many flaws you're going to need for food tables? You need drink the sensors and then like any extras that you might need, like a photo backdrop or the champagne wall or something like that that you might want to also add. So we go through everything from start to finish to make sure we don't miss anything. And then that way, whatever, after they leave, I do send over the invoice. They can see all the prices of everything and then kind of break down on what they would, what they need and what they don't need right, it's a lot.
Megan RallisI know you just rattled that off like it was nothing, I know it was like only you know 30 seconds of the hour and a half wow do a lot of consultation yeah, I do this a lot
Kayla Sheetsyou got it, you got to go through it, but yeah, then we actually so, like on the round tables or the rectangles, however your guest tables are going to be well, actually mock, set it up and you know, depending on how many tables sometimes if you have 25 round tables, you might be doing two to three different kind of centerpiece designs. So we'll walk through all of those and, wow, actually set it up and play with different items until it's what you love, because it's a big day.
Megan RallisI like that too the process of being able to like, try it on, like you would, an outfit or something in your home, like putting it all out, looking at it to put together, not just imagining it, but really seeing it and playing with the different textures and colors and stuff like that. That you, you know all of your inventory.
Kayla SheetsThat's fun which is really nice, because it makes it a lot easier for everyone whenever they can actually see what it is that they're wanting, you know for sure do you ever, at the end of a consultation, just get a hug from the couple? I'm not really a hugger, I'm actually kind of surprised to hear that you seem like you feel hugger.
Megan RallisI'm not a hugger.
Kayla SheetsMaybe if it was like for a photo Okay, you know, like just for the picture it has to be purposeful.
Dawn WilliamsIt has to be for the IG man.
Adam WilliamsRemember efficiency. What is this hug for?
Megan RallisDo we have a reason? What's my motivation?
Kayla SheetsYeah, I actually know I feel awkward, like if someone was to come and I'm a hand shaker, okay, I will shake their hands. But that also goes back to my Live stock and growing up on the farm. That's just like I have a stronger hand shake than most men. I've learned that, especially Nice, through the years, that I think a handshake says a lot about a person. So I'm not a hugger. No, I don't. Unless it's from my son, I will say I like hugs from him.
Dawn WilliamsYou and Meg have so many similarities right now, so organized, don't want to be hugged. I mean like, yeah, in moments where I feel like I should hug me, we just give each other this look and kind of tilt our head Like, oh yeah.
Megan RallisYeah, we're good, we're good.
Kayla SheetsYeah, if it's not for like, if it's not for like a photo, then it's probably standing pretty far, far away. I might, I might do for 10 hugs for photos, but not really not for.
Megan RallisSo, listeners, no need to, no need to end the consultation with a hug you don't have. Don't put that on yourself. You don't need to.
Adam WilliamsWalk in with stress, knowing not what to do, and walk out knowing what to do. But you don't have to hug.
Megan RallisYou'll just leave thinking that was a great, I feel so much better.
Kayla SheetsThank you so much. Yeah, great, and I start walking towards my desk. So then that can't even happen. I'm worried 100%.
Megan RallisShe's already got it planned out so that she doesn't have to Logistics, logistics.
Kayla SheetsShe's good, she's good.
Megan RallisHow many ways are there to fold a napkin?
Kayla SheetsI don't, even the number does not exist.
Megan RallisInfinite amounts of ways to present so many, so many.
Kayla SheetsYou just look at Pinterest or kickoff, you'll go in a deep dive of napkin holding.
Megan RallisI think we should. Let's do an article on it Napkin folding yeah.
Adam WilliamsThis is riveting. This may be some of our best work. It's a swan, all right.
Kayla SheetsAdam says move on from this.
Adam WilliamsHow to fold napkins.
Megan RallisThere's 101 ways.
Adam WilliamsAre there.
Megan RallisAt least. Well, she says Wow, it would take up the whole magazine, just page after page.
Adam WilliamsWhat if all of the pages were folded?
Kayla SheetsAll the napkins.
Adam WilliamsFold all the pages.
Dawn WilliamsYeah, all right.
Megan RallisWhat's your least favorite part of your job? I think it's inventory.
Kayla SheetsYeah, it's definitely inventory, yep, right now. So since I purchased it, I haven't done like a full On inventory Like I should have. Do you just keep?
Megan Rallisbuying things, you just keep buying.
Kayla SheetsYeah, but like all the stuff that I already had, like there was tons of stuff that I didn't even know that I had, and so I'm going through these codes. I just had a big old yard sale At my business to get rid of stuff, something like that Can't. What is it and why do I have it Did so? No, yeah, I felt so much stuff Good.
Dawn WilliamsI cleaned up your inventory.
Kayla SheetsMore room for new stuff. Yes, exactly, and so I'm redoing like all of my inventory and like trying to get it on my website so that it's easier for people to see, and if they couldn't make it into a consultation, so that they would be able to just go to my website and see what I do have available and eventually be able to do things online, like if they just were needing like linens, they could just run their order through there. But the inventory is a lot.
Trends in Events and Home Interiors
Adam WilliamsYeah, I can imagine a lot. So what is the most popular thing that you see people doing right now?
Kayla SheetsLike on just like.
Adam WilliamsLike what is everybody walks in and what I want to have this like. The most popular item is at the champagne wall. Is it a flower wall? Like what are you seeing people really wanting right now? They are.
Kayla SheetsThey are really liking the campaign wall right now because there's a lot of different ways you can do it. You can do it with like a toast or whatever you're doing your toast and cutting cake and stuff. Or you could also do it as like a feeding chart and actually put the name on each little glass. You know, and it tells them.
Dawn WilliamsThat's cute. I like that.
Megan RallisYeah, isn't that cute I do like that, done like so.
Dawn WilliamsWhat do you think about that?
Kayla SheetsYeah, she's like yeah, that makes it like I feel like that's really popular right now for me. The flower wall. Of course you can use them like behind it Head table or, you know, add the photo ops.
Megan RallisWhat about neon signs? Are they in or are they?
Kayla Sheetsout, there's still a neon sign. People like to customize neon signs, though, to put behind them, so you know, making their own life.
Megan RallisThat's not something. You read their own last name.
Kayla SheetsNo, but I do. I do have neon signs, but a lot of people do like to add to the flower wall and such. But I've had a lot of bright getting their own, you know, and then they can try to keep it. That's cute. I don't have a lot of neon signs in my house, but teach their own yeah.
Megan RallisYou just haven't found a place for it yet you will.
Kayla SheetsYeah, I don't have a place for it yet I'm trying to teach the letter. I can just throw everything out and just start over. That's how I would at my house.
Megan RallisYeah, how quick do you get bored of something and want it all changed?
Kayla Sheetsreally quick. That's why my husband like says that I'm not allowed to get a house built from scratch because I would just, by the time it was done, I wouldn't like it.
Megan RallisI mean that's good that you're in the rental business then. So you maybe you leave your house alone a little bit and you can change trends in the rental company.
Kayla SheetsI'm just a lot of my friends. So like also with my house, like I just I really honestly like the rental company is fun for, like I could do colors and stuff like that, but like in my house, honestly, I just like my favorite color is black, so like I could just my whole house to be black and I think that's what my husband is, that I could make it all black and be so happy Black bathtub, black, toilet, black, black, black, black, black. If I could just do it all black, that would be awesome.
Megan RallisI'd like to see that when I'm done. Sounds very interesting.
Kayla SheetsYeah, I know I have a story because I'm live. I gotta start one project at a time whenever it comes to my house Because I don't have time to do it all.
Adam WilliamsI think Kayla and I may be more kindred spirits than I thought.
Dawn WilliamsBlack and.
Adam WilliamsBlack and I gotta finish a project before I go to the next. Good quality.
Kayla SheetsI painted my dining room black which is like a board of fun, so like the bottom white but like the top half black. I love that. And then I painted my kitchen countertop black with like marble. But now I think I want I have like ugly colored cabinets, like the old oak.
Kayla SheetsOh, paint that and my sore arms, gold, oak, yeah, and so now I think that I'm gonna put like a light, like blanks pouring down like a light wood, and then obviously I'll have to paint my cabinets. But my problem is that I also want them black. I'm like, how much is it going to be too much? Is it too much? I don't know, but there's not another color that I would like. I'm not really the white Like, it's just not.
Megan RallisI feel like we could do a whole podcast just on your kitchen.
Adam WilliamsI know Like this yeah.
Dawn WilliamsOh my gosh.
Megan RallisAll right. Well, Canada's next venture will be Home Interiors Signature Home Interiors.
Kayla SheetsNo, I couldn't do that.
Megan RallisBye, Kayla.
