And I decided to be"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":197.09,"endTime":201.32,"body":"a volunteer with a nonprofit"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":197.09,"endTime":201.32,"body":"organization called amicos the"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":201.32,"endTime":206.21,"body":"last Americas. And the goal of"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":201.32,"endTime":206.21,"body":"that organization is to develop"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":206.21,"endTime":211.31,"body":"youth leaders through immersion"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":206.21,"endTime":211.31,"body":"and community led projects. So"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":211.31,"endTime":215.12,"body":"leading up to that summer, any"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":211.31,"endTime":215.12,"body":"volunteer is required to raise"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":215.12,"endTime":219.29,"body":"funds, which will be contributed"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":215.12,"endTime":219.29,"body":"towards a project that their"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":219.29,"endTime":224.0,"body":"community decides on. And these"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":219.29,"endTime":224.0,"body":"communities are all dispersed"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":224.0,"endTime":227.48,"body":"throughout Latin America in"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":224.0,"endTime":227.48,"body":"different countries. And I was"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":227.48,"endTime":230.69,"body":"matched with a community in"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":227.48,"endTime":230.69,"body":"central Nicaragua, it was about"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":230.72,"endTime":234.05,"body":"1000 people. And as someone"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":230.72,"endTime":234.05,"body":"who's lived in a city their"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":234.05,"endTime":238.07,"body":"whole life, it was quite a"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":234.05,"endTime":238.07,"body":"culture shock to go into a"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":238.07,"endTime":241.64,"body":"community like that. The biggest"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":238.07,"endTime":241.64,"body":"part of that culture shock being"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":241.64,"endTime":244.82,"body":"the language barrier. Everyone"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":241.64,"endTime":244.82,"body":"spoke Spanish, nobody spoke"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":244.82,"endTime":247.94,"body":"English. And there were only two"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":244.82,"endTime":247.94,"body":"other volunteers with me in that"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":247.94,"endTime":252.2,"body":"community. You know, other"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":247.94,"endTime":252.2,"body":"examples of the culture shock"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":252.2,"endTime":255.26,"body":"where, you know, we took the"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":252.2,"endTime":255.26,"body":"bucket baths instead of showers,"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":255.26,"endTime":259.19,"body":"we own the latrine. Instead of a"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":255.26,"endTime":259.19,"body":"toilet, slept on a cot. There"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":259.19,"endTime":266.6,"body":"were farm animals going under my"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":259.19,"endTime":266.6,"body":"car at 5am. It took an"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":266.6,"endTime":269.63,"body":"adjustment, but soon that stuff"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":266.6,"endTime":269.63,"body":"did not matter after a week or"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":269.63,"endTime":273.53,"body":"two. It bothered me at first,"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":269.63,"endTime":273.53,"body":"but it didn't matter after a"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":273.53,"endTime":277.7,"body":"little bit. And I got pretty"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":273.53,"endTime":277.7,"body":"acclimated to community life and"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":277.73,"endTime":283.31,"body":"grew to really love it grew to"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":277.73,"endTime":283.31,"body":"love the people around me. And"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":283.31,"endTime":286.64,"body":"it was just a life changing"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":283.31,"endTime":286.64,"body":"experience. But going back to"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":286.64,"endTime":291.35,"body":"the phones that we had to raise"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":286.64,"endTime":291.35,"body":"in our community, we decided the"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":291.35,"endTime":294.89,"body":"community decided that the best"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":291.35,"endTime":294.89,"body":"way to use those funds would be"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":294.89,"endTime":297.68,"body":"to install about five or six"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":294.89,"endTime":297.68,"body":"pockets throughout the"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":297.68,"endTime":301.76,"body":"community. So that there was"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":297.68,"endTime":301.76,"body":"easy Your access to water and"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":301.76,"endTime":304.97,"body":"someone in the community had a"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":301.76,"endTime":304.97,"body":"well that we decided to pump"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":304.97,"endTime":308.93,"body":"water from and distribute from"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":304.97,"endTime":308.93,"body":"there as the water source. So it"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":308.93,"endTime":313.49,"body":"was a really gratifying project."},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":308.93,"endTime":313.49,"body":"And it really went well."},{"speaker":"Aaron Moncur","startTime":313.0,"endTime":316.93,"body":"Wow, that's"},{"speaker":"Aaron Moncur","startTime":313.0,"endTime":316.93,"body":"amazing, how fulfilling. And I ate a meal in"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":343.71,"endTime":349.2,"body":"every single person's house in"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":349.2,"endTime":353.37,"body":"the community. So I really got"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":349.2,"endTime":353.37,"body":"to know everyone as well. And by"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":353.37,"endTime":358.08,"body":"the end of it was basically my"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":353.37,"endTime":358.08,"body":"family. And to be honest with"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":358.08,"endTime":361.44,"body":"you, Aaron, the culture shock"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":358.08,"endTime":361.44,"body":"returning to the United States"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":361.44,"endTime":365.55,"body":"was far more intense than the"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":361.44,"endTime":365.55,"body":"courtroom going to Nicaragua,"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":365.55,"endTime":369.36,"body":"because when I went to"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":365.55,"endTime":369.36,"body":"Nicaragua, I knew I would see my"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":369.36,"endTime":371.79,"body":"family again, I was going to"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":369.36,"endTime":371.79,"body":"come back in two months. But"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":372.06,"endTime":376.98,"body":"when I left Nicaragua, I had no"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":372.06,"endTime":376.98,"body":"idea that I was going to feel so"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":377.52,"endTime":381.6,"body":"sad to leave, and that I might"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":377.52,"endTime":381.6,"body":"not ever see these people again,"},{"speaker":"Unknown","startTime":381.72,"endTime":385.92,"body":"I keep in touch with them.
