As I went"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":436.53,"endTime":439.74,"body":"through the academic path I"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":436.53,"endTime":439.74,"body":"tried, it wasn't an either or,"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":439.74,"endTime":444.6,"body":"for me, it was both. I tried to"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":439.74,"endTime":444.6,"body":"find a way to do both. And then I had"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":480.57,"endTime":484.26,"body":"that opportunity to go and help"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":480.57,"endTime":484.26,"body":"with government for three years."},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":484.26,"endTime":490.47,"body":"And that really changed a lot of"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":484.26,"endTime":490.47,"body":"my thinking. When I did that. It"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":490.47,"endTime":494.58,"body":"was it was the best three years"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":490.47,"endTime":494.58,"body":"of my professional career where"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":494.58,"endTime":497.7,"body":"the three years I spent at the"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":494.58,"endTime":497.7,"body":"National Science Foundation just"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":497.7,"endTime":501.75,"body":"completely changed my"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":497.7,"endTime":501.75,"body":"perspective. I had been all"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":501.75,"endTime":507.57,"body":"about me, my and mine. And I got"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":501.75,"endTime":507.57,"body":"there. And I came to grips with"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":507.57,"endTime":511.77,"body":"the fact that the United States"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":507.57,"endTime":511.77,"body":"needed to do something, to"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":511.77,"endTime":515.31,"body":"engage a lot more of our"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":511.77,"endTime":515.31,"body":"talented people in engineering"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":515.31,"endTime":518.31,"body":"and science, and especially the"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":515.31,"endTime":518.31,"body":"women and underrepresented"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":518.31,"endTime":523.41,"body":"minorities. And so I became a"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":518.31,"endTime":523.41,"body":"real advocate for increasing the"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":523.89,"endTime":526.2,"body":"participation of"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":523.89,"endTime":526.2,"body":"underrepresented groups in"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":526.2,"endTime":529.26,"body":"engineering, because you just"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":526.2,"endTime":529.26,"body":"can't leave the brightest half"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":529.26,"endTime":532.41,"body":"of our population on the"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":529.26,"endTime":532.41,"body":"sidelines. And frankly, that's"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":532.41,"endTime":535.65,"body":"the women's students that they"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":532.41,"endTime":535.65,"body":"have are really, really bright"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":535.65,"endTime":539.55,"body":"and capable. But you compare us"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":535.65,"endTime":539.55,"body":"with China and India and all I"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":539.55,"endTime":544.02,"body":"mean, my goodness, we just were"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":539.55,"endTime":544.02,"body":"under representing our women in"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":544.02,"endTime":546.6,"body":"engineering and science, we need"},{"speaker":"John White","startTime":544.02,"endTime":546.6,"body":"to do something about it.
