Your RSS Feed and iTunes

Do I need an iTunes account to submit a podcast?

Yes. Even though it doesn’t cost anything to submit a podcast to the iTunes store, a valid Apple ID is required.

How do I create an iTunes account/Apple ID?

  1. If you haven’t already, download iTunes. iOS devices already have it installed.
  2. Enter the iTunes store by clicking the link on the top right.
  3. From the Store menu, choose Create Apple ID. Click Continue on the resulting screen.
  4. Enter payment method. iTunes asks for a payment method, but does not charge for creating an account or submitting a podcast.
  5. Click continue.

How do I submit my RSS feed to iTunes?

iTunes makes it really easy to submit your feed, but you will need an Apple ID to do so (for more on creating an ID, see the answer above). Click here to launch iTunes, then put your RSS feed (e.g. into the field.

That’s it! You’ll get a confirmation email that your feed was submitted. iTunes will send a following email after it’s been approved.

How long does it take for iTunes to approve a podcast submission?

iTunes takes between 24 hours to 14 days to approve a podcast. The times vary because they have real people look over and approve the show.

If you’re having an issue with your podcast submission taking longer than 14 days, contact iTunes.

Why didn’t iTunes approve my podcast feed?

On occasion, iTunes will not approve a submitted feed because the show’s content includes unauthorized copyrighted material, profane metadata, erotica, illegal solicitations, or hate speech. iTunes has a strict policy against show’s with this type of content.

If you’re not posting any content mentioned above, but have still been rejected, one of most common reasons for this is that you don’t have any episodes in your feed yet, or the podcast contains explicit content, but is not marked it as “explicit.”

Can I re submit a podcast that’s been rejected?

Yes. If you believe you fixed the error (marked the content correctly as explicit for example) you can try resubmitting the feed to iTunes again. You may have to change the name of the podcast initially to show that it’s not a duplicate podcast.

My podcast was rejected, what can I do?

If you think your podcast was rejected in error, contact iTunes for support.

Do I have to submit my feed every time I publish a new episode?

No. After iTunes approves your feed, you’re good to go. iTunes will check your RSS feed every 24 hours to check for any updates.

How do I change my RSS feed in iTunes without losing subscribers?

Unfortunately, there’s no easy way to do this for the podcaster. iTunes official guidelines for changing your RSS feed with them is this:
