Tania is a māmā-mum of three, kuia-grandma, tuakana-sister, aunty and a strong leader who is the driving force behind our Real Talk kaupapa.
Heavily experienced in the school of life and hard knocks, Tania has come from not so humble beginnings to create a movement that inspires and empowers people all over Aotearoa to speak their truth. In her words ‘It is important to me to utilise this platform as it is intended – to encourage people to speak their truth, to encourage, to motivate, to inspire and to empower all those we connect with. If our kōrero-talk can change or save one life, then it’s all worth it.’
What to expect in each episode REAL, open and honest conversations with people who have seen it all. The subjects covered in our kōrero start with but are not limited to the subjects listed below:
*Suicide and triggers and coping mechanisms
*Mental Health awareness
*Sexual & physical abuse
*Gangs & domestic violence
*Drug and alcohol addiction
*Teen pregnancy & pregnancy loss
*Death & grief
*Discrimination – racial, gender, sexual orientation
*Relationship breakdowns
*Career & business aspirations
Real Talk NZ - We are helping to break generational cycles. We are all survivors of traumatic experiences, so we are passionate about using our platform to change the narrative, especially for our rangatahi-youth. We are helping to shine light on traumatic experiences and normalise discussing these once ‘taboo’ topics. Through this, we show others who might be going through a similar path right now that they are not alone. Because when we speak, we heal, when we speak, we free ourselves, when we speak, we help others heal. We encourage everyone to speak their truth because people don't understand what you've been through unless you are real, raw and honest about your experiences.
Our Real Talk kauapapa-events happen regularly throughout Aotearoa and all are welcome. For more info on how to get to an event visit https://realtalknz.co.nz/

The Real Talk NZ Podcast
Harlem-Cruz Ihaia at Real Talk Te Matau a Māui / Hawkes Bay
Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa, nau mai hoki mai ki te kaupapa Real Talk.
I’m Tania Carr, and today in this episode, you are going to hear the absolutely inspriational story of Harlem-Cruz Ihaia.
Harlem took the stage at our Real Talk Mō Ngā Rangatahi event in Ahuriri in Napier, sharing her empowering story of her strong connection to her Māoritanga, her whakapapa, and how easily life can go off track if you are living it for others and not staying true to you for you.
She shares with us her entrepreneurial journey and how being aligned with and passionate about what she now does, has led to a sense of freedom and flow. She is right where she is meant to be.
Here is a whakatauki that Harlem shared with us on the night
E kore au e ngaro, he kākano i ruia mai i Rangiātea.
I will never be lost, I am a survivor, for I am a seed sown by my tipuna from Rangiātea.
Here is Harlems story...
Harlem-Cruz Ihaia is the 2017 Miss Universe New Zealand, a passionate Kōhanga Reo teacher, Breatheambassador and a proud wāhine Māori (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Porou).
“We can do anything, my favourite shoes are Red Band gumboots but also high heels so we can do both.”
Harlem-Cruz says her Māori heritage gives confidence in her identity.
“Believing in myself that I can do this. I’m Māori, my goal is to stand Māori in that competition to show the world this is New Zealand, this is Māori, this is us.”
Harlem founded Pūrotu, an organisation dedicated in providing the tools and environments for young Hine to stand confidently tall and proud in their own identity.
