5 Ways to Use the Cozean Screening Protocol
Mar 25, 2024
Nicole Cozean, PT, DPT, WCS & Jesse Cozean

We created the Cozean Screening Protocol because we wanted a way to help patients and other practitioners realize when pelvic floor dysfunction was causing symptoms.

We first published this as a poster at IPPS.  Using PelvicSanity as our site we reviewed patient intake forms and charts to see what symptoms or history were most predictive of pelvic floor dysfunction.  And after running some cool statistics the Cozean Screening Protocol was created.  Anyone answering 'yes' to 3 or more of the questions has more than a 90% chance of having pelvic floor dysfunction.

You can absolutely download and use the tool for free (get it at www.pelvicptrising.com/screen).

Here are five ways we've used it at PelvicSanity!

  1. Marketing to other practitioners.  This helps other practitioners - physicians, ortho PTs, etc. - screen for pelvic floor dysfunction so they can refer to you.
  2. Using it Program-Wide.  If you're working in a setting with orthopedic or other specialties, this can be a great way for them to screen for pelvic floor dysfunction in their intake paperwork.
  3. Patient Education and Community Talks.  We will often print these and bring them to community events we host so people can identify their issues themselves.
  4. In the New Patient Folder - This is a great handout to give to new patients so they can realize which of their symptoms/issues are related and also give it to friends/family who might need our help.
  5. Social Media Content - These make great poll questions or informational content for social media (and remember, once is never when it comes to posting).

Feel free to download it and use it (we just ask for proper attribution and to not change the questions)!

About Us

Nicole and Jesse Cozean founded Pelvic PT Rising to provide clinical and business resources to physical therapists to change the way we treat pelvic health.   PelvicSanity Physical Therapy (www.pelvicsanity.com) together in 2016.  It grew quickly into one of the largest cash-based physical therapy practices in the country.

Through Pelvic PT Rising, Nicole has created clinical courses (www.pelvicptrising.com/clinical) to help pelvic health providers gain confidence in their skills and provide frameworks to get better patient outcomes.  Together, Jesse and Nicole have helped 500+ pelvic practices start and grow through the Pelvic PT Rising Business Programs (www.pelvicptrising.com/business) to build a practice that works for them!
