David's father passed down his love of throwing to David by putting a shot put in his hand at an early age. That love and passion for throwing led them to seek out Olympian Sammy Walker who coached and mentored David throughout his career.. along with bribing him with BBQ. Sammy introduced David to weightlifting during Junior High and David goes on to have successful weightlifting career after graduating from SMU.
