-       FREEDOM AND LIBERTY

These two words are interchangeable in English speech and text. There may be some quibbling distinction between them in terms of technical legalese, but none useful in the real world.

Instead, each word should  have a distinct function.

Freedom (escape) FROM: (a noun or noun clause).  Evolution of human compassion to surpass the merciless laws of nature.

A person or a people may obtain  freedom from …

Slavery, imposed misery, repression of speech, illegal dispersal, housing of soldiers, a draft. Or intellect, culture and good conscience (as in MAGA maggots).

Liberty TO: (a verb or verbal clause). Re-enforces the merciless  laws of nature.

A government, a society or individuals may obtain the liberty to…

Impose slavery (States’ Rights), impose poverty (trickle-down capitalism, communist collectivization), speak freely, assemble, impose a draft, act as if there were no consequences (no precise word for that in English, rashly?), pursue happiness (a word salad fantasy), hold off  misery (a simple duty, simply calculated for armies, that government often neglects in favor of  special interests “who pursue their happiness.”)

          Words like emancipation, liberation, sanction, permission, preference, caprice, allowance, toleration, and suchlike cannot replace this word pair. Freedom and liberty are terms that grow from the bottom up, from the grass roots like rare flowers. They can only be protected or denied awkwardly from the top down with iron dome controls.

On WeaponWorld, might is always  right. Right (wing) is superior to its awkward, Left opposite. So liberation is called “negative.” It restrains top down or mutual constraint. Freedom to do as one pleases is called “positive” so that power may exert itself and grow. Backwards thought imposed by cultural WeaponWorld linguistics, as usual. 

These  two words could serve us much better, but they cannot because English speakers impose a tautology upon them. They mean the same thing to us. Might as well have just one word as two, equally useless in political discourse.

Here is an example of a political discussion with liberty and freedom used distinctly.

 “What do you want? Your liberty to impose States’ Rights’ slavery? Thus your liberty to deny select human prey their freedom from slavery?  Your freedom from the idea that all people, or from your biblical text that all men, are created equal? Or do you just demand freedom and fight to the death for that absolute right, not for your much simpler desire for liberty to impose slavery?

If both words were used this way, they could retain positive or negative connotations, could confirm or deny each other elegantly in any given situation. Even so, we could tell them apart with ease. 

There is no such distinction. English speakers use both words interchangeably (as in the U.S. Constitution and Magna Carta?, among other citations).

LOOK UP & CONFIRM  CITATIONS. 

Romance languages have a word resembling “liberty,” but none for freedom. Freedom translates as liberty in their language. A language with only one such word is as bad as English with its two synonymous words that cancel each other out. Might as well have just one word: no benefit gained either way. German and Chinese have two distinct words; Russian does not. Don’t ask me to define those foreign terms or differentiate them in detail.  This needs much deeper study with input from native speakers of a majority of human  languages.

The tautology imposed on the words liberty and freedom is regrettable. It makes political arguments more combative among English speakers. The single use of a word like Libertad is equally prickly. Note the Mexican or Spanish Civil Wars and those of others, during which Libertad to make a profit fought against Libertad and justice for all, to achieve the massacre of millions of fellow citizens.

International discussions should access both words (likewise distinct) in every language, whether its speakers employ none of them, one of them, or both synonymous, or other expressions of the same kind.

The laws of the Sermon on the Mount, those of the love of Christ, must sweep away the hypocrite writ of mere men.
