The First Thyme

Thyme
Trouble … Now here I am, once again, wonderin’ what in the world is goin’ on here. I try ta’ live a simple life. Takin’ care a’ ma’ Mama, workin’ six day a’ week as the number one (an’ only) checkout girl at Abigail’s Grocerette in town, an’ goin’ ta’ church on Sundays. That’s ma’ life an’ I’m here ta’ tell ya‘ that I’m happy with it. An’ I aim ta’ stay that way.

But then comes along, an’ I don’t know why, sometimes jus’ outa the blue, comes trouble.  By the way, I’m Thyme Quinn, that’s T-H-Y-M-E fer those a’ ya’ who think they need ta’ know. Me an’ ma’ Mama live in that ramshackle farm in the picture ya’ seen already. It don’t look like much, an’ the truth is, it ain’t … much, that is. But it’s the best we got … an’ it’s home.

I spend a lotta time by m’a self, when I can, prayin’ … up here in this here God’s meadow out back a’ the house. I talk to God near every day. He brings me peace.  He don’t say nothin’ back, but I do believe he listens.  An’ I don’t mind if He don’t talk … well, that is, most a’ the time.

But sometimes, like on a day like today, when I’m jus’ … well, how can I say it?  Jus’ down in the dirt … I wish He could jus’ speak on up, an’ jus’ mutter somethin’ … jus’ so I know he’s listenin’ an’ thinkin’ on how He’s gonna  … gonna … smile on me.

I’m not lookin’ fer ‘im ta’ save ma’ soul, mind ya’. No nothin like that, jus’ a little nod ma’ way, you know, jus’ a little touch.

Oh, God, can’t ya jus’ send me a sign?  Maybe jus’ blow a little breeze across the tops a’ the grasses around me, ta’ show me that yer listenin’?

God?  Are ya’ there? Ya’ know I love ya’. I feel yer love fer me near every day, but today, I’m sorry, but I’m jus’ a little more needy than usual. God?

God, ya’ know I also love this here meadow. It’s where I find ya’. It’s where I pray.  Somehow, I jus’ know yer here.  I know it! Maybe yer shy, I donno, maybe yer jus’ too busy. I could understand that.

Am I jus’ talkin’ ta’ the wind?  God? Are ya’ there? It’s me, Thyme. God?

Well, OK. Sorry fer pesterin’ ya … Guess I’ll be goin’ off ta’ work now. I’ll try again tomorrow. Have a nice day.

God
Mornin’ Thyme. You have a nice day too.
