E6: Music

Thyme

Hello, God.

God

Hello, Thyme.

Thyme

Let’s get right to it.

God

Good.

Thyme

I been thinkin’.

God

Good.

Thyme

Who invented music?

God

Aaah …

(long pause)

Thyme

Well, is that all ya’ got ta’ say?

God

Nope.

Thyme

Then why the long pause?

God

It’s a big subject.

Thyme

Yeah, you’re right about that.

God

I’m right about everything.

Thyme

You sure are confident.

God

I am confidence.

Thyme

You’re always right about everything?

God

Yup.

Thyme

How do ya’ know?

God

Because I made everything. At least everything that’s worthwhile …

Thyme

Ya’ made music?

God

Yup.

Thyme

How’d ya’ do that?

God

With my imagination.

Thyme

Cool. I wish I could have your imagination.

God

You don’t need to wish for it. You already have it.

Thyme

I do?

God

Yup.

Thyme

You mean I could invent somethin’ as glorious as music?

God

Yup. If ya’ put your mind to it.

Thyme

But where’d ya’ get the idea for it in the first place? It jus’ came to ya’ outta the blue?

God

That’s a nice way to put it. Outta the blue …. An’ outta the gold, an outta the magenta an’ the chartreuse.

Thyme

Wow.  It jus’ appeared one day?

God

I was workin’ on language … tryin’ to find a better word than “Laughter” or “Tears” or even “Joy” (which is one of my favorites). I thought to myself, “God, you might have to use the full range of human hearing to truly express these words.” So, I decided to create a language that would include all the frequencies that one of my favorite inventions, the human ear drum, could perceive. Using the full range of frequencies, I then went into my imagination and, instead of speaking, what came out … was singing.

Thyme

Wow, God, I’ve never heard ya’ put so many words together at once.  I thought you were a man of few words.

God

First of all I’m not a man, an’ when it comes to music, there are no words. That’s the point. Music goes beyond words. When it comes to language, it’s the best I ever came up with.

Thyme

It’s the one language that everybody understands, ain’t it?

God

You got that right.

Thyme

So, since my imagination is also your imagination, I can make any kind a’ music I want to?

God

That’s right. You have access to all the music in my imagination.

Thyme

I can hear everything you hear?

God

Right again. It’s just a matter of listening. But remember, there’s one little pickle problem to consider.

Thyme

What’s that?

God

If you want to communicate what you hear to others …

Thyme

Uh huh … What?

God

Ya’ gotta practice.

Thyme

Oh yeah … There’s always somethin’ …

God

Yeah. There’s always somthin’.
